i had a terrible pantry moth infestation in my home. first i threw away the old flour and i thought it would be done. months later i had to throw away literally everything in my pantry in order to fix it. not to mention cleaning egg sacs and dead moths in the back of the cupboard. the whole process took months before all of the moths were gone. YUCK
Before I didn't see the need for organizers until this happened to me. Now I make sure everything I open I close tightly so nothing goes in. I haven't seen any moths in a long time, so I think I'm doing a good job! ☺
If you grew up in hot humid climates, you grew up putting your dry goods in the fridge. Like breads, crackers, cereal other types of snacks like nuts and seeds. I thought my pops was crazy for putting certain things in the fridge. Because I was convinced it would get soggy... but it doesn’t. Fridges aren’t just for wet items. matter of fact there are some wet items you shouldn’t put in the fridge as it will develop mold quick, like maple syrup.
I have an infestation, and upon inspection realised that a few of my housemates store their flour and sugar and spices in open paper bags, not even with clips... So I look into one of the sugar bags, stirred around with the spoon that was left in the bag, of course, and immediately find two chrysalises coated in white grains. God knows how many eggs she has eaten.
Doesn't help to wash rice when weevils place their eggs inside of each grain and seal up the opening. Very likely we have all been eating a lot of insect eggs!
That won't work. The eggs are laid inside of each grain of rice. They won't harm you anyway. You already probably eat a lot of animals. Animals, insects blah blah blah blah
This is something that occurs more often when you buy your food from whole foods or natural foods/stores, because they lack the preservatives that keep the bugs from getting in. We had these moths before, had to toss everything, now we put all our dried foods like pasta, grains, etc, in glass mason jars and we keep flours in the freezer and fridge. We haven't had them again since!✌🏼️ *also we took everything out of, then washed the cabinets, and wiped the outsides of sealed containers *also I wanna add that I'd rather not have those GMOs and preservatives, so I still buy natural/organic foods regardless
Also be aware that these pantry pests can and will dig right through paper such as what flour is usually sold in. Also they love spices. Never buy the spices with the fliptop lids - they will get in those. Always buy spices with screw on lids.
I just ate a bowl of those pantry moth larvae mixed in with my cereal. When I noticed the worms it was already too late because I had already ingested the whole bowl
The freezer is your friend. Kills all stages. And they can chew their way into zip lock bags. Even things like cake mixes aren't safe in their boxes. You can put stuff like that in the freezer for a few days when you bring it home to make sure nothing does live in it.
@NoYo I currently have them and they've gotten into a brand new box of crackers unopened and finding eggs and moths in them. Some bread crumbs new in box were infested too. They've surely gotten into alot of my food wrapped in plastic.. throwing everything I can find them in away as we speak
YOOO they left the best information out!! : more important than air tight container is relative humidity! - too high and the eggs inside the jar will have a high % of moisture even inside the container allowing the eggs to hatch!! keep the humidity low where you keep your dry stuff! get wet air out and dry air moving through , or else those air tight container's will just be moisture capturing breeding vessels. ps!! _ the amount of time and effort required to produce a cup full of those moth larvae would price higher than escargot sooooo if you are ok with eating fish and frog eggs go for it! Personally id rather just feed the whole bag to chickens, still no waste - they love bugs and grains too so whats the difference. thanks!
Currently dealing with this situation. Had a bag of walnuts that wasn't closed properly that they went crazy in. I've put everything in containers which has helped but every time I think they're gone they show back up someplace new. Those fuckers get into EVERYTHING!
I was at a blind school years ago and one of the students was completely blind I was partially blind and I was absolutely freaking horrified when she opened up a container of dog food for her service dog and there was hundreds of roaches and ants just everywhere oh God I will never ever forget that as long as I live there was also another problem which I wasn’t told about initially he was the fact the place was infested by rats so there’s nothing like waking up in the middle of the night and you know you hear a squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak. I jumped out of the bed and proceeded to run it straight into into a cinderblock wall . Do you not do bugs or mice. Place was a death trap and I mean that literally all we actually had two people die in the month that I was there they had a deadly mold outbreak I think it did kill one person in the other person just happened to die but when that second person died in the span of like three weeks I can remember we literally were all yelling that we wanted to leave the building.
I have a little vac and I eat on my bed sometimes and vacuum up the crumbs well somehow one of these got in the vacuum and they were just breeding in there day after I was killing these moths in my bedroom till I figured out the source was my little hand vacuum I just threw the whole thing out
I put my rice, pasta, legumes and various dry ingredients into my deep freeze for 3 days at -18 degrees celsius (0 degrees fahrenheit). Kills all the bugs and some of their eggs.
Our bugs came from bird seed and I tossed everything and even with an exterminator and traps I am still seeing moths two months later. All food is now in the fridge and double ziplock bagged
That one time I almost ate one of the larvae that was cooked together with the rice... Good thing that batch of rice is gone and now they're mass producing so much of these larvaes/flies... Damn it... I hated them so much that when I see them I squished them..
I had this last summer, there was very old rice that was the source of it all. We ended up throwing 80% of the pantry out. Not gonna lie it was overdue so it was a nice wake up call. If the moths weren't there then it would have just kept piling up with old food in the pantry.
FML. I literally had boxes of opened dog food behind my desk in my kitchen that I didn’t even know about and there were dead ants/moths and cocoons. I’ve started cleaning today and I’m going to fog the kitchen so hopefully it should cut down on the population, I also bought more glue traps to capture these freeloaders. Ughhh *Edit* : I don’t want to speak too early but so far I haven’t seen any moths lately. 3 weeks ago there were at least 20 flying a day, and tonight I haven’t seen one since Halloween. Looks like fogging, cold weather, and getting rid of the food source is the best solution. Don’t give up if you’re struggling with this! I used Hot Shot fogger(3 cans) if anyone is interested.
I have the tiny black bugs tossed everything out. Used Mason jars for everything including plastic for dry goods. Cane back again and I sprayed again. I think they are coming from my tenet on the 2nd floor, we are driving them up and down. All my jars have no bugs in them. Decided to use a bomb this time.
Everyone is breaking out about bug eggs and they eat eggs that come out of chicken asses. They only have one hole. They poop, pee, and lay eggs (have baby chicks) out of the same hole.
I was so mad we got infested we this Indian moth it came pinto beans made in Mexico we stocked a lot due to covid-19 it’s very difficult to get rid of them our whole cabinets and our foods were infested. I end up now throwing our foods on the house and the pantry foods. I still keep looking for them all the time. So tiresome dealing with this moth.
No wonder my mom always told me to keep my flour in the fridge

So nothing goes in? 9 times out of 10, they're already in, just not born yet. So freeze that Mkr for 4 days before cooking.
I’m happy that I keep all my food in the fridge or freezer
Is your fridge and freezer quite big then? Fruit and veg alone fill up my fridge
Your cereal rice and bread etc are in the fridge too?
@2:48 It don't matter if you're black or White.

Never seen them "chew" through plastic bags. The eggs are already in the product inside the bag from the manufacturing process.
