Look amazing Dave 🙂
Thank you
Wow!!! Awesome setup.
Thank you
Fantastic! Had a buddy make my one and bout the stand that you mentioned. Love it!
That's awesome!
Thank you for doing this uncle Dave… humble as always …
you rock🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Thanks very much!!
I think it should be fairly easy for SSL to add a configurable option to make the UF8s automatically bank to follow the UC1 or UF1 for those who want that. That I think would be the best solution.
Right?! The banking should be easily solved with some updates.
Lets hope so
The Link plugin …..
I love your desk, I have 3 XTouch Controllers and now I'm going to add, UF1 and UC1. This will add greater flexibility!
NICE!!
Nice setup. Thanks for the video. Gave me some good ideas for the SSL
Glad I could help
Great vid! Thanks for sharing your setup. Love those SSL stands! There is another stand manufacturer for these SSL controllers named Mixer Mounts. I am looking at them since I am in Canada...cheers!
Cool. Thanks for watching!
For now I'm gonna stick with my Softube Console MK3 and Faderport 16 .... I tried the new Icon V1-M and had to return it for another which I also returned... sure would be nice if someone came out with a control surface that had extended fader options without adding more transport controls etc.... thanks for all your videos Uncle Dave.
You're very welcome
Yeah, you’d think someone would have invented that by now.
Hey Uncle Dave! As far as I know the channel follow issue was more or less solved in SSL's last update. They added, I think, the Plug-In mixer mode to 360° and it colors the tracks on the UF8 as well. In case you missed it, it might be worth checking it out. I also love how you set up the whole thing. Looks really cool and easy to work with.
Thanks for the info. I'll check it out
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasySSL just released version 1.8 of 360, they now include the Link Bus Compressor so you can map third party compressors to the UC1 bus section
Such a cool idea! Takes me back actually-- I had made a similar setup once with the first version of Softube's Console 1 + Fader and a SSL 2+. Made a special drawer for them that went under my standing desk. Now after seeing yours I miss it somewhat 😀 Great job!
Very cool!
Oh wow ! Thank you for this video. Please provide the Amazon link. Because I want one of those Liquid Stands.
Do a quick search, you'll find it
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I meant to say, an affiliate link. Do you have one for it ?
Dave, have you put an SSL channel strip on each channel and select the "Plugin Mixer" layer on the UF8 and the UF1. The Plugin Mixer layer can be set up in the 360 software. I have the exact same setup and, when setup correctly, it scrolls and banks flawlessly with my DAW (Studio One).
Thanks for the tip
Dave. You are onto it. Youve nailed it. YOU NEED ONLY ONE FADER.. OR 24, 36 OR 48. Basically just the one fader. Or the exact (and maximum )number of faders, youll consistently want to use. They do look good end to end, but its more of a mind f#@k than people could believe. I have a Tascam US2400, its one unit of 24 faders plus a master fader. Using Reaper it banks 24 channels to 48 with one button push. Reaper mirrors this onscreen. While this is a lot better than what you are dealing with and describing, ultimately id prefer to have 48 faders out in front of of me! Hey Dave, keep up the great work. Love your stuff!
Yea, looks great but its not as functional as I would have liked. That's for sure
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy be cool if you get the frame made for the stripped down version! Always watch your vids. Maybe one day make a 32 fader 'console' with the Behringer units? Itd be a fun comparison!
I originally bought a faderport 16 then “upgraded” to the uf8,uc1, uf1 set up… I held on to the faderport and now find myself going back to it because it integrates so well with S1. Plus the footprint is so much better for a desktop set up… Adding just a Uc-1 almost makes it perfect.. I do love the Uf-1 so going to try the uf-1/uc-1 combo and see how that works… def like the smaller foot print idea. When mixing i like the fader set up but when tracking I prefer a clean desktop. Great video Dave. Look forward to watching you dive further into this topic!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Dave for all what you do. You made me chose Studio One and From the days of your first demos of this eco system I bought them and never regret It. Heres my 2 cents about this video: I recomend keeping one of the UF-8. 1-Imagine, working on drums and moving tracks to tracks, instead of banks of 8 with direct access? 2-Features in Layers and plugin opening/closing? 3- UF-1 can follow UF8 select or be independent. I prefer independent wich benefits EX: UF-8 for chanels in banks mixing and UF-1 moving in the Bus region with SSL Meter plugin saves a lot of larges moves, when Busses are on the far right, like you do. I have been thinking for a long time about physical setup. Your's Is the best for me but just narrower for more easy access. You should try with the 3 units only. Have a great day!
Thanks for the suggestion. :)
Those are some amazing stands I must say.
They certainly are
That stand is amazing. Def going to check out the link. Thx so much
No problem 👍
This is great Dave. It’s got me thinking. First things first is a monitor arm I think 🤔
Go for it!!
You make the best videos man.
Hey, thank you so much!!
That slide out is brilliant...I currently have my 88 key controller there, but maybe I could put that off to the side.
NICE! Thanks for watching
Thanks Dave. If you could only choose one way of working between your Origin 32 or totally ITB, factoring in sound quality and ergonomic flow...which would you choose and why?
On the Origin, all day every day. Not even a close comparison. Go watch and follow that channel and you'll know why. I have made several vides about the topic.
Dave, first post on your channel which is great BTW!! I watched your vids about the Faderport 16 and I bought it. I use S1. The other thing I bought was the MP Controller made by MPMidi for plugins. What a game changer. Bring in a second FP16 and you are all set. I do understand your connection with the SSL analog board and trying to create that same experience in the box. I would really love to see you review 2xFP16's and the MP Controller.
Thanks for the suggestion but I do not have access to fader ports any longer and I am certainly not going to go purchase them...LOL. I did reach out to the company that makes the MP Controller. They have no interest in working with me. I thought it was strange that there is almost no youtube videos about their product , expect for the company's videos. I showed them all the DAW controller videos I have done for all the largest companies and the amount of exposure they have received. They had no interest. Their loss in my opinion. So, you wont see that controller on this channel.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Absolutely their loss Dave. Didn't know the back story. Thanks for the great content you provide us out here!! 👍
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasyDave. I bought an MP Midi a couple of years ago. It was my worst purchase in 30 years as an engineer. After two months of back and forth with them, trying to get it to work and not completely crash my system I gave up and asked for a refund. They would only give me a refund if I paid for an insane shipping cost (half the price of the unit) and then they would “examine” the unit before refunding me. I ended up selling it second hand. I urge anyone reading this to steer clear.
My take is that, for working on Channel strips, YES you only need one fader, and surely you wouldn't need the UF8s, however the UF8 is very useful when you want to sit and balance tracks. having physical channels (8 or 16) is very useful. some producers value the art of Balancing tracks over fine-tuning individual FXs and EQs. So My conclusion is that if you value balancing tracks, then surely you will need the UF8s, but if your strength and value is mainly in tuning indivifdiual track sounds to perfection quickly then the UF1+UC1 is more than enough. AND for some of us that value both work flows, I will encourage you add at least 1 UF8 to your setup. moving multiple faders at once is so sweet and invaluable especially when a client wants a rough feel of his track. moving faders for them to hear the various versions of the sounds through balancing tracks is just fantastic. I also allow my clients to play with one or 2 faders, so they feel part of the engineering process. builds great client relationships that way as well.
Great points! thanks for sharing
Great segment, I could never get how to match limited physical faders with the high number of tracks in the DAW.
Thank you. Make sure you go get my free mixing course. www.homerecordingmadeeasy.com
Great video! I really wanted my UF8's and UF-1 to work for me but it was almost too much for me to configure and not enough for me in other aspects as a PT user. I ended up swamping them out for Avid S1's and it's been a way better. Yes I know they will work best with PT because thats what they were primary made for but I would have loved for the UF-1 to work at the very least that was a cool piece of gear! Who know maybe down the line I'll get one again. I will agree with what you said about having faders in front of you and whether you need them for ITB work. For me I've worked on a console enough to understand the workflow and limitations on a console. It makes sense and you can move a lot quicker in theory because you have full channel strips, sends, panning ect in the best spot it can be while tracking or mixing. But when it comes to working on a controller if I really wanted to make use of the controller I had to rethink the way I work to make it make sense. Sure there are some plugins that map out to the controller and you can set up plugins but you are still having to use the screen or mouse sometimes. It was very hard for me to let go and try my best not to use the mouse and use my $1500 controller lol I can't say that it sped up my workflow but it did make me feel more comfortable with using my ears way more and not look at my screen and have more trust. Looking forward to your next video!
Yea, if you use PT then the Avid controllers make way more sense. Thanks for watching!
I am very interested to see if the workflow is better with just UC1 and UF1. Great video showing the quirks
Yes, I like the UC-1 & UF1 workflow much better......that's just me :)
Thanks for the coverage of the SSL controllers. I have been considering the UC-1 + either UF-8 or UF-1. I am leaning toward the UF-1 for a few reasons. 1. I have limited space. 2. Cost. 3. The DAW track following issue. Having said that, I use Luna and Logic Pro so there may be better integration with the UF-8. I also thought I'd suggest that in the future, the UF-8 might get an update that resolves the issue.
The UF-1 is a great choice. I think you'll be very happy with it
Rig is super clean. bravo
Thanks! 👍
Hi Dave you have to insert the 360 link from SSL on each track and it will follow the banks past the 16. At least in Cubase it works but I think Studio One is included.
Good to know, thanks!
Pretty cool set up amigo.👍🏾
-Regarding the UC1 fader not following the UF8 fader, I see it as a plus because you can access 2 different tracks at once if you wanted to (for example volume, mute, solo, pan etc.) without interfering with the board (the UF8’s). Since you can also have up to 4 UF8’s connected, you may have more than one person/producer/mixer sitting at the desk at one time and having redundant access across-the-board is a plus for my workflow instead of one person controlling everything.
The SSL‘s modular design gives anyone the option to build the set up that works best for them and their needs.
FYI, my current set up is (2) UF8’s, a UF1 and a UC1 and when it comes down to just mixing and manual automating (after the production phase), I’d never give up my faders my friend…make sure you choose wisely before getting rid of the UF8’s lol😉. ✌🏾
Ok, thanks
Nice and slick❤
Thanks you. Make sure you go get my free mixing course. www.homerecordingmadeeasy.com
I have a studio live 32. Would you go this route or use the studio live if you had the choose?
Yes, I do not live the StudioLive for DAW control. Go watch my videos that I did on the SL32 last year.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy can you put the link to the one you're talking about in this comment section?
I just have the UC-1 and UF-1. I don't have room on my Argosy Halo desk for a UF-8 also. Seems to work just fine.
Great, Thanks!
My take is keep the faders because if you need to adjust quick volume to something else that might clash with the track tour working one. You would have to click to that track lower volume then click back to work rather than just reaching over and muting or adjusting volume to other track without leaving the track your working on
Ok thanks for your input
great video. I have the exact same set up as you (not the stand but the same controllers). Personally I prefer the UF1 to the left of the UC1 so that I can comfortably use the transport with my left hand and have my right hand on the mouse if need be. The only thing which bugs me a little is having the 2 UF8s either side of the UF1 and UC1 as I sometimes get lost. I'm tempted to sell it all and buy either one or two softube console faders to have right in front of me in the centre and a Console 1 mk3 behind the faders. That way the faders would be in the centre like on a real analogue desk and also the console 1 mk3 can control other plugins such as pro Q4 and you can even see the GUI of the pro q4 on the inbuilt screens. Are you also tempted to swap out your SSL controllers for Softube Dave?
No, I am not going down the road of the Softube controllers. The SSL are the best in the business as far as I am concerned. However, none come even close to the feel of working on a real console. Its not even close
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy that makes me feel a lot better about having invested in all the same ssl controllers as you and yes thinking about it I do agree with you.....the SSL controllers are the nuts. Curious t hough why you even use controllers when you have an analogue SSL sitting there? Are the controllers just there to make RUclips content?
It seems to me that SSL should be able to give you options to sync the faders. Also, a split to lock a bank of faders to the busses seems like it would be fairly simple to add to the software. Thanks for the content
Thanks for watching!
Hey Dave, nice video. I was thinking about this implementation since I have been looking for a used Euphonix/Avid MC control that uses Eucon as the control protocol and it can emulates Mackie HUI. I think the issue that you are facing is not related to the controllers themselves but to the implementation on the software side, because on the MC control and the system 5 with the hybrid option, that didn’t happen, you were able to bank for the entire console and everything was following the changes, so I believe it’s a matter of how the control protocol is implemented within the DAW, or maybe how the Mackie Control is deployed between the controllers and the software. Maybe SSL can fix this while having something like a layout control, something Euphonix and Avid used to do really well in Eucon. Another thing, you mentioned that you cannot control 2 channels or parameters at the same time while mixing in the box, well that is possible when using the EUCON protocol with the proper controller, you can actually adjust two EQs, Compressors, Faders, etc. at the same time because the protocolo allows it. Thank you for taking the time to show this, the stands are beautifully designed and really well done, and even having these little issue, your set up looks killer. Thanks again, Dave!
Thanks for sharing your opinions and thanks for watching!
There’s no better midi controller than mp midi when it’s coupled with stream deck via soundflow pro tools shortcuts you barely don’t touch the mouse or even look at the screen that often. I have shortcut on my streamdeck that opens mpmidi plugins on all my main busses vocals busses drum, music, bass , perc , background vocals etc. They all fit on one page of my stream deck with an ssl console (plugin alliance) it feels like I’m in front of a huge ssl console in a press of a button
Cool. Thanks for sharing
I’d like to see this
Awesome setup but one question I have is where did you get the desk mat? :). I've a similar desk and been looking for something robust and that won't wrinkle just like that.
I think I purchased it on Amazon? They sell large mats like this
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Yes you're right 😀. I should have just googled it lol. Just bought a Titanwolf XXXL 👍
Seems to me , that would be a perfect setup if you didn’t need to do much banking. But who only uses 16 channels these days? Thankful & grateful for your honest interpretation!😃👍🏽
My thoughts exactly
Love your videos, especially because you use the same DAW as I do. So, have you found a way to control (change) the input gain in Studio One (the control at the top of each channel in the mixer) with the UF1 or UF8? Is there an easy way to do that?
I havn't yet. Thanks for watching
i have uc1 and uf1. its pretty fast. and i probably will not go for the uf8. the uc1 gives you bank left and right, 4 knobs as channel faders and a "5-8" button to bank through your main bank. so you always have fader control quickly. its super duper for me. i've been using the eChannel since the ole pirate bay days so its really great solution.
Thanks for watching
Aren't you using one of the UF8s as the DAW controller in the center section of the Origin desk, or are you only using the UC1.UF1 for that purpose now?
Nope. No UF8 on my Origin. you must have not been following my channel Mixing Music Analog. The UF8 has been gone for almost a year. :)
My 2 UF8s in pro tools banks 16 when both are connected, not 8.
Interesting. maybe it works differently in Pro Tools?
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I was thinking it's a preference
After many 16 fader setups, I realized that I was only moving one at a time! I sold a UF1 but re-bought after their latest update with 360 link. It shows also that SSL is investing in making improvements. I also have a UC1.
Cool, thanks for sharing!
In my opinion, ditching the UF8's, and relying solely on the UF1's fader, would be a bg mistake. You'll loose the most important thing with using fader control surfaces. Being able to balance several channels (faders) simultaneously. If you rely on a single fader, you can just as well ditch the whole thing, and go back to ming with the mouse.
I'm not familiar with Studo One, Can you lock specific channels n the DAW, to faders on the control surface? Here's what I would do, if I had your setup. I would set up one of the UF8s to dynamically scroll with the selected channels n the DAW. Then I would lock the faders on the other UF8 to bus channels (drum-bus, guitar bus, vocal bus, etc.). Then you can scroll around the individual channels, and at the same time have constant access to the important mIx-buses. In MY opinion.
I believe that some of the issues that you are having might be caused by inherent problems with the MCU protocol. Once you are using SSL gear, you can try installing their 360 Link software ( believe it installs automatically with the latest version of the 360 software. Then you'll install a 360 compliant plugin on every channel. This solves some problems with syncing mixer channels with faders. Unfortunately is does not work with non-union channels, such as MIDI and VCA channels.
One thing I'd love to see you test is, if the UF8 follows the channel visibly settings in the DAW. For some reason, no-one has bothered with the important feature. Having hundreds of channels that are hidden n the DAW clogging up the control surface is very annoying.
Thanks for the suggestuons
Hmm I wonder if the Console 1 MKIII in multiple's would bank as suppose to in Studio One? They could be placed under that new stand Dave. He should start building for Console 1 by the way.
I'll let him know about your request.
i have same satup Awesome
NICE!
How about creating a board that sits on the keyboard stand that could also accommodate your mouse and computer keyboard ,like a genesys black.
Maybe....will see
A big problem I see with the UF 8 is how they have been built regards to the distance between faders, taking up more room than the conventional console.
Imagine having three UF 8’s tagged together to give 24 faders, the length is just too much, and then the essential UC1, just not practical.
I’ve had two UF 8’s and the UC1 in the centre and that was even spread too much for my liking.
If any I’m reckoning 1 of each at the most.
Appreciations Dave for all you do.
Great points. Thanks for watching!
It looks great but it seems more effective and efficient to go with one of the faderports and the softube console. The only way I see that beating a faderport is looks. That presonus faderport is ugly but it works like it should especially with Studio One. I feel like the next generation of SSL with have all if that worked out. They may have their own DAW.
The fader port has most of the same issues as the UF-8. I did videos on them a couple of yers ago
I think that in terms of controllers to work pro is as follows
1. minimum 24 faders ideally 32
2. make a static mix and then create busses summarizing the session.
3. don't do the banking 8 by 8 this will drive you crazy but 24 by 24 if you have 24 faders so that you only have 2 banks and no more
4. don't have separate controllers, the faders must be linked together
use the beatibul stand for just the faders, propably you need to buy another one, and put a nice stand just for the channel strip on the top of the desk that you can easily remove when you go to do other activities.
sell the remain controller 🙂
Not a bad suggestion.
I wonder if they’ll do a SSL nucleus?
Good idea!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I sent them a message about it, hopefully they will. 🤞🏾
For presonus S1, Faderport 16 and Softube MKII-III seem to be the most seamless. Those bank issues are pretty much nonexistent for me.
Cool, thanks!
I have 1 x UF8 with the UC1 and UF-1. The UF8 means I can record multiple tracks of automation simultaneously.
Thanks for watching!
So what’s the beat you gonna sell the origin now? You might have it pegged now, bro all that outboard gear- that’s how i rock! The 8 & the 1- tall rack for my outboard. I use Ableton though. But I’m a writer. I can’t stand ProTools- Ableton is the way for me.. I have songs up same name.. I don’t think you’re too far away from me either. I’m in Palm Beach.
LOL...you could not be more incorrect.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy which part?
Keeping the origin?
Add (2) more 8-channel fader packs. Then, you'll have 32 channels (i.e. your analog SSL desk) with very little to no banking you'll have to do.
I dont think I have the rom for that....LOL
Wouldn’t it have been cheaper and easier to put the controller on the desk and roll out a smaller tray with you keyboard and mouse? You could also put a midi keyboard on it. This is they I plan to do it. I wouldn’t like to reach over to my keyboard and mouse.
I guess you're right but everyone has a different way they like to do things, so whatever works for you is cool
I'm with you get rid of the uf8's it just make sense they work with a lot of tracks...it would confuse me
I find it easier to work with just a UC-1 & UF1
Did you sell the vm1?
No, they are being given away as part of our mixing contest
www.homerecordingmadeeasy.com/mixing-master-class-mixing-contest
Same problem here with just the UF1. It only has one bank, after that it doesn't follow. UC-1 works perfectly indeed. In plugin mixer mode it does follow but with that you can't utilize your UF1 to the max. Such a shame and it should be more clear when people purchase these kind of controllers.
That's why I made the video! come here when you want to know the truth about a product
Great Desk! Looks Good! 1 point of attention: background music is a bit too loud... But great that you took the time for this explanation video💯
Thanks for watching
No don't change anything. If you want normal fader control use cubase pro you won't have those issues.
I dot use Cubase and not switching for a controller.
That's exactly the reason why the channels don't work in the DAW or when you select a channel in the DAW the faders don't work. That's the reason why I would never buy it.
Thanks for the feedback.
