  • Buddhism spread along the Ganges River Basin. In the west, in the middle and upper reaches of the Ganges, Brahmanism is prevalent. Where Brahmanism is prevalent, the customs are conservative and the Theravada is basically the elder. The lower reaches of the Ganges River are in the east, where the Samana trend of thought originated, and the ideas are relatively open. Therefore, during the second gathering, the two sides formed a very distinct attitude towards the precepts based on the region.
