I know a lot of comments say this is the best derailleur adjustment video on RUclips but I have to say….they are 100% correct. Spent two days trying to adjust my new M8100 derailleur and after watching this one I have everything dialed in perfectly. Even adjusted my wife’s 11spd perfectly.
Thanks so much for your help, I had a brand new Canyon E mountain bike and it had been totally set up wrong as delivered. Your instructions were crystal clear and helped me fix the bike to perfection.
This presentation was inspiring, an education, and saved me countless future trips to the bike shop! There were a couple missing elements that i had to learn on my own, but that is the exact thing i needed to force me to use my own noodle.
This is so much better and more detailed than many of the other derailleur install/maintenance videos I've seen where they rush through it while using maximum lingo to ensure you can't possibly understand unless you already are a bike mechanic yourself. I can't emphasize enough how important it was to show what it's like when the derailleur ISN'T properly calibrated so we know what to look for. I got a stick jammed into my chain and derailleur on the trail. I couldn't believe it. I must have hit it so perfectly for it to have shot directly up and into the gears like it did. I've done basic bike maintenance: de-grease and dry lube chain, replace a tire, patch a flat, and maintain shock PSI but having to dial in a derailleur with no prior experience definitely felt more involved than I realized it could be. After this would be learning to tackle full shock maintenance and replacing internally routed cables which has to be easier than dialing in a derailleur. Thanks.
Perfectly clear and well done all around. Super helpful. I could not get good shifting on a new bike from the shop. So I started from square one with your video. Perfection. The shop wasn’t even close with the B screw adjustment….
Bought new Trance X with all XT had issues from the start with shifting predominantly at the smaller (cogs) end, been back to shop 4 times and still issues anyhow after seeing your terrific video all sorted....the b screw was NOT adjusted correctly. Many thanks.
Thanks so much for this - I just switched from a SRAM 12 speed setup and now need to learn how to properly setup the Shimano 12 speed XT derailleur I have; very helpful - I'm hoping my bike will be shifting great in no time. The order of operations is very helpful.
Suspension seems to be the next level up from hydraulic brakes. I'd love to see whatever the easiest of these on a rockshox (yari would be perfect) fork: add or remove tokens, change the air spring length, or a 50 hour/lower leg service. I want to start with dipping my toe in suspension maintenance. By the way, great use of different camera shots and angles in this video! Keep it up!
Hey Paul, thanks for your comment. I plan on doing some suspension servicing videos over the fall and winter, check back for those. I’ve been lucky enough to work in a Rockshox suspension shop, so there’s lots of good content to come. Your support is appreciated! Thanks, Len
You mentioned the clutch lever, but didn't elaborate on what it does. Can you please share that info. Otherwise this video was super helpful and answered the questions I had.
Ok, so I’ve done this all and I can have either my low gears aligned or my high gears aligned. Any tips? I’m no dummy, I’ve built several bikes and serviced them for almost 30 years but the deore 12 speed on my used RM Growler 40 has me stumped!!
If you can get all the gears to work 1 direction but not the other, it's generally a cable and housing issue. If you can get 1 half but not the other (seems to be your problem) then it's an issue with the RD alignment compared to the cassette. It's either bent or the hanger is bent. Thanks Len
@@garage31 I managed to find a hanger alignment tool and sure enough that fixed my problem! Thanks so much for your help, I almost bought another derailleur thinking my pulley wheels were out of alignment!
You didn’t mention the clutch, so we ride with this “up” or “down”. Up - Seems to stop hanger from bouncing Down - makes it soft and bouncy. Let me know your thoughts :)
Got a brand new bike with shimano xt der & shifter. Ive followed everything and i still cant get this thing to shift smoothly. I just really cant hit the right cable tension.
Some bike manufacturers cheap out on the cable and housing, or install it incorrectly causing a pinch point. Replace it with Shimano SP41 housing. Might be worth getting your hanger aligned too. Thanks Len

I’ve watched countless tutorials on how to index gears and somehow still managed to f it up. This one however has them shifting silky smooth. Thanks!

I used to fix my motorcycles. I could take the engine apart and put it back on. But I never knew how to work on bicycle gear
systems
Excellent freaking video. Simple explanations and perfect demonstrating. Greatly appreciated getting this info.
Dude, super helpful video. Doing it step by step like you showed finally fixed it, butter smooth on the trail today!
Excellent tutorial, very easy to understand. Thank you for this. Other channels make this process overly complicated.

Thank you for such an easy to follow video! I was daunted by installing a new derailleur and was able to follow step by step and have 100% success.
This video was great. It helped me get my new Slx derailleur set. Great work many thanks.
You've got the best maintenance videos! 👌🏽
Watched a few of these and this is by some distance the clearest instruction now a follower 👍
Great video mate. My gears are working like a dream now. Really enjoy your videos, keep up the good, informative work dude.

Thank you for the B tension
Great video Thanks
Thank you! Very helpful!
Thanks for explaining. 😊
Very useful 🫶🏽

It’s also worth noting that Shimano 12s is notorious for falling out of tune, SRAM is much better in that regard.
Thanks boss
thank you!

Clutch down when removing the rear wheel or replacing the chain. Otherwise leave it up for riding. Thanks Len
Is the high low a torx bit? Used to phillips
2 mm allen

So what position should the clutch be in?
Shimano Clutch Position - On or Off? #mtb
Should a full suspension bike be sagged when setting b gap on shimano 12 spd?
Nope, that’s just Sram. Just adjust to the one on the RD and your good to go. Thanks Len
@@garage31 cheers, always wondered
There's no line for proper adjustment of the b limit on my shimano xt deore - i really wish the video would cover that, given the title
Can you send me the part number on the RD? I never seen one without it. It should read something like rd-m8100
