Cleaning the labels from glass jars and reusing them is one of my favorite zero waste kitchen hacks! Try my simple 6 step process for removing food jar labels with all natural ingredients, and ditch buying expensive brand new jars for bulk food storage. I'd love to know...what do you store in your reusable jars?
Fantastic!
Using a razor blade scraper from Home Depot after soaking the bottles gets all the paper & glue residue off very easily and no scratches too!
Love that tip! Thanks for sharing
I’ve found with some labels where getting the label wet mixes with a heavy coating of glue that forms a gross gunk that starts drying quickly and making a bigger mess that filling the bottle or jar with boiling water and letting it sit for about ten minutes you can often just peel the label right off.
I would caution for safety people should put the jar in the sink and pour from the kettle slowly or use a funnel so as not to get burned. Oven mitts are a good idea as well so the steam doesn’t burn your hand inadvertently.
Great tip, Kristin! Each jar is different and some have very pesky glues.
Great easy tips! Environment friendly is great and even better when you have pets. One method to add...I used this to get labels off wine bottles. To start fill empty bottle with super hot or boiling water, being careful not to burn yourself. I do this with bottle in the sink. Let the bottle sit for 10-15 minutes..the glue on the label will soften and the label is easier to peel off.
That's a good one too! I actually have a whole post about removing labels from wine bottles, I love saving them for decorations (and I use it as my oil jar by putting a bartending pour spot on it 😉). www.forkintheroad.co/clean-wine-bottle-labels/
Super Vid..Thx so much!
Glad you liked it! It's a easy way to reuse jars
I keep all my glass jars with labels in a bin .. whenever I have boiling pasta water left after removing the pasta .. I put the bottles in it .. water is piping hot, quick soak & razor blade scraper cleans it all.
And I don’t need to use fresh water
That's a very creative way to reuse pasta water! Thanks for sharing, I love when others share their interesting ways to reduce waste in the kitchen.
Steel wool. It works every time, and it's fast!
Great tip! And reusable. Love it, thanks for sharing!
You said to use "oil," but didn't elaborate. Are we talking cooking oil (grape seed oil, etc.)? Thx for the tips 🙂!
Any type of cooking oil will do, I used olive oil. It's just used to loosen up the sticky glue, so the type doesn't matter (though maybe not motor oil, haha).
For oil soluble glues you need to pour boiling water into the jar. As the glue is heated, it will melt. Pull the label off, then wipe with white spirit into a disposable tissue. While the glue is hot, it will readily dissolve. Hold the top of the jar with a rag or oven mitt. You can use some natural oil instead if that floats your boat. Some of those etheric oils. But if it doesn't evaporate, you'll have to wash it off.
If you soak the paper in a sink, it will fall apart and can't be pulled off in one piece as cleanly with part of the glue. You can process multiple jars with the same hot water. Obviously don't dip the hot jar into cold water.
Note that PET plastic will shrink and deform with hot water. It is very funny.
If you don't know if the glue is water soluble, try that first. On failure, let the paper dry. Water soluble glues are usually in a thin layer and look brownish. Hot melt come in clumps.
Looks like Americans go through a lot of 5% vinegar in plastic contaioners. Baking soda is just an abrasive, which you can use to not clog your sponge. Scraping with metal is ok on glass. Everything will scratch the lid. Use only soft paper or wool. Acetone and washing soda will damage the paint.
Damn this woman is hot!! And thankfully now I have a clean jar for my weed!
Ha! Glad you found good use for your jars. 😉
