José Feliciano is one high tier guitarrist. I knew he did the classical guitar stuff, but the first time I saw that vid I was like "man, he can really shred too!"
This one caught me by surprise. Never would have imagined José tapping into his inner Hendrix and doing it so well! Felice Navidad will never be the same for me again!! Lol.😎 Fil-You Rock!
Wow! Didn't know Jose could play like that. I've seen him a fair bit over the years and knew he was good, but never saw him go electric. Thanks for the post, Fil!
How good is he! Probably the best cover of Purple Haze I’ve ever heard! This has blown me away. That’s insane Fil who would of expected him to play something so diverse of what he normally plays! Wicked vid Fil !!!😮😮🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
And THAT is why when I was a young pup learning to play way back when Jose was one of my heroes. He used to plug in when he performed with Doc Severinsens' band on the Tonight Show back in those days as well and I remember him doing a version of Taking it to the Streets I personally thought was better than the Doobie Brothers. He did a solo that blew away anything Patrick Simmons had going on back then and Patrick had some pretty good chops of his own. I have hunted around but cannot find a video of that show. If anyone knows where it can be had please let me know, I'd love to see it for old times sake. Anyway, Jose has always been one of the greatest guitar players in the world. Thanks for reviewing this one, he's still a guitar god to me and seeing him reminds me of all those lonely hours I spent sitting on my porch at night, trying like hell to pick like him and Segovia but always falling short of the mark.
Jose meant to add in Billy Jean riff., he covered that song. He covered the thrill is gone as well. If you not heard him play Malaguena it's worth checking out.
Jose like many other artist plays by feel. It’s something that comes naturally with repetition. This was a phenomenal dedication to Jimi Hendrix. A memorial to his legacy.
...yes indeed..Fil is truly a master at his art...it's such pleasure following him...he echoes the sentiments of the true musician...historically. ...and musically.
The intro riff, the first solo.... his VOICE.... all great. I mean, he only hit a few "bad" notes only because he's blind and sort of sliding around with a Django type technique of first two fingers but man, this was really good. You are right, if you only listened, you'd say "wow, this was a very good cover of Purple Haze." I know one song by him. Feliz Navidad....... Feliz Navidad....... etc. hahaha But I remember him from ages ago. HAHAHAH man, he threw the Beat It riff in there! Of course, Beat It is 1982, this is 1985.... of course it was no coincidence of notes! hahaha Not many can say they jammed with Hendrix. I played one of B.B. King's guitars backstage once and of course met him but I was like maybe 16 or so? and have his autograph around somewhere. Interesting stuff!
I've seen Feliciano pick with Country Legend Roy Clark, I'be seen him play a Blues guitar like no other, and I've seen him play Rock, but he's never been included in the greatest guitarists of all time, and I think it's because he's really known for one genre, but if I had to choose just on the best player of the instrument and nothing else, then he would be in my Top Three of all time.
Really Jose plays with Roy Clark? Was a Tv show? ..do you remember what o where? ..two giant and Jose sure is on top guitarist on planet for his wide range like no others
LOVE IT! Thanks for featuring José Feliciano and showcasing the diversity of styles in his repertoire, Fil -- a truly masterful performance! Playing one of my all time favorite Hendrix tunes & doing it seamlessly, is an incredible feat but, Feliciano is a consummate musical genius so, he can uphold his guitar prowess, through any genre. Nice to see people recognize his genius, accordingly -- didn't José make Billboard's Top Guitarists of all time, list?.. Fil, I am truly appreciative of your informed analysis; you always do an exceptional job of fully exploring the work and the Artist you cover! The "Midnight Special" continues!...From Harlem, New York -- rock!✌🏼💖🎶🎵
Fil - AMAZING how you keep coming up with the most UNLIKELY of artists who continue to blow our minds even more than they've already been! I would never have imagined Jose could dig into his bag and come up with jamming like this... And I was around when Jimi first appeared on the scene, so it's even more impressive to witness this tribute. THANK YOU. Not so much into out and out head banging is Robbie Robertson, who can take you where the sidewalk ends with his subtle, intricate, tough, badass string work. He exhibits this over and over on a couple solo albums, in ways he couldn't work those subtle effects when he was (with) THE BAND. Thanks again.
Fantastic and incredible "wide-range" guitarist. Thank You for add this video. Jimi Hendrix in 1967 goes at London Speakeasy club where Jose Feliciano was in concert to congratulate to him and jam
Holy shit! I didn't know he did anything like this. Electric? He killed it too! I remember hearing him and liking him on the AM radio when I was a kid (I'm old). Thanks for sharing. Had no idea.
Unbelievable clip! Fantabulous - and he’s better than most guitarists anywhere. No wonder he’s do decorated an artist. I have to say / I love your channel! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is a mind-boggling performance---impossible to put into words. Jose has such a soulful voice & he is the ultimate guitar virtuoso. His range extends from classical, flamenco & jazz to rock & blues guitar. Listen to him performing The Thrill Is Gone. And now Purple Haze by Jimi!! Jose's career stated in the 1960s & he is still performing & working on a new album in mid 2019----at the age of 74!!! Bless you, Jose!
Jose was the first live act I ever saw. He shreds and I'm grateful I got to see him way back then in 1976. Of all the clips I've watched on your channel, this was the biggest surprise of them all. I'm floored by this.
Jose is one of those talented individuals that bring people to appreciate different genres. I learn to like very old songs from my mother's generation that only bohemian people know because Jose played them in a video with Danny Rivera and Nydia Caro. He told Gloria Estefan that boleros (ballads) were the Viagra in the old times. His first record were boleros that he recorded for his parents.

I'm changing my previous attitude about ranking players because they are ALL great and gifted in different ways with different strengths and limitations! In Jose's case a very challenging limitation of blindmess...A person does not dedicate 14 hours a day to become so proficient at an art form unless that is true!!🎸🎶☮❤🤘
@@loripond1839 , I am a big fan of Jose. He can go from a full on rock music to a soulful bolero in spanish. He has covers of Billie Jean, Satisfaction, Samba Pa Ti from Santana. It is worth to do a search, his range of songs is very wide.

Hi Fil ..I've been away for awhile..haven't been able to comment as much as I usually. You've featured Jose a few times and good on you that you have. Unbeknown to new generation "rock guitarists " , Jose has always been classed in a box or never been heard of...sadly. Jose once said .." anybody can play rock ". I have religiously followed his music since 1969..from his London Palladium live album...Alive alive O...and anybody with sound music sense can appreciate why he has been called." The world's greatest living guitarist "...it's just a sad fact that it takes a Jimi Hendrix cover..to prove it to today's music generation. Jose has outclassed most musicians from yesterday to today...in all spheres of music. Lastly thanks for doing justice to " thee one and only " ..blessings to you brother..you are the greatest. Best regards Selwyn Katz.
I Hope Galavision LatinTV or Festival of Viña del Mar channel give us the high quality video of this masterwork, Unfortunately this was found in a old vhs with over 20 years...
I just started checking this cat out after reading where he nearly destroyed his career for playing his beautiful version of the so called national anthem here in Detroit in 68. I was 5 years old then. His version of Malaguena (spelling) was impressive, now this. Now I know why Jeff Beck stated in an interview that one of the greatest moments in his life was when 'Jose Feliciano, of all people, came up to me and said he really liked my playing on blow by blow".
wow, never read this from Jeff Back for Jose Feliciano, But its true, when Jose become a star in 60s he was a great impact on other musicians, I remember similar words from John Lennon, Carlos Santana, Keith Richards to Elton John for Jose
Lovely story about Jose's friendship with Jimi back in the 60s. Of course, they both loved each other's playing, but Jose pointed out to Jimi that it was easier for Jimi because he could see. Jimi smiled in that way that he had and someone pointed out to Jose that Jimi played most of his solos with his eyes closed ... BTW, this is the BEST cover of Purple Haze I have ever heard. Jimi would have loved it.
Jose's repertoire is a catalogue of superlatives, literally! My vote for the best of all time! The best damn it! If I had to listen to one guitarist for the rest of my life then Jose wins hands down!
I admit that I only remember him singing 'La Copa Rota', which is a massive and timeless hit in Spanish music. This makes me realize how little I know about him and how great he really is
Pil love the videos. You are teaching me a lot about what to look for in a guitarist but not being a player myself I don't know what you mean by some of your comments. Maybe you could do a video on what "hammer ons" "pull offs" and "alternative picking" is and show us dummies what you mean. Maybe you already have if so could you give a link to it? Thank you. Rock.
Thanks John! Hammer on - when you pick the string, and then thrust a finger onto a string, making an audible note but not having picked the string again. Pull off - when you pull the finger off the string and fretboard making an audible note without picking the string. Alternate picking - picking the string with an up, down, up, down pattern continuously ☺
This Concert took place in 1984!! Viña del Mar Festival, Chile.First time tha I saw him play live...absolutely amazing musician!! What a Cover for christ sake's!!
Awesome performance!. Quickly tuning that string in the middle of a song without compromising the groove....not many guitarists would even dare to try it.
I wasn't surprised that he was so good at anything as his playing indicates a dedication to feel - whatever he's playing. This did make me think about you maybe reviewing an earlier musical icon Ivor Novello (whom they named the award after). Rock music is exciting and I'm basically just a rock player but I feel the 30's and 40's guys had the edge when it comes to structure, melodic content and clever lyrics. Here is Mary Ellis from the US doing one of his songs. You often put the oscilliscope thingy on voices - I wonder what it would reveal of her unbelievably accurate vibrato and pitch? wow ... never knew that side of Jose' Feliciano. Your comments about no 'seeing' the fret board and relying on feel makes me think of Jeff Healey of course, who essentially made his own shapes and likely one of the few guitarists that made Stevie Ray Vaughn up his game.
Jose and Jimi played together in London 1967 at Speakeasy club

that made me laugh :-D
LOL, I would love to see that!
No no....we'd need JIMI to cover Feliz Navidad!
A true master at work/play ! 🎸
👍
He’s truly a maestro!
👍
wow ... never knew that side of Jose' Feliciano. Your comments about no 'seeing' the fret board and relying on feel makes me think of Jeff Healey of course, who essentially made his own shapes and likely one of the few guitarists that made Stevie Ray Vaughn up his game.
Who would think Jose could rock out like this. The guy is amazing!
👍
That was awesome!! A true master.
👍
What a gift he was, I believe it said that that concert was in Chile? The Latino world loved him♡
Yep!
He is just rocking it!🎸🔥🤟🎶
