Great observation, Ben. This SM topic has been a discussion with others as well.
As a musician, there are a myriad of areas we need to address as an Artist, Business Person, etc. Specifically addressing the creative side, it is no longer enough to be concerned about music for music’s sake. Now we also need to be an expert in content creation which dictates filmmaking chops, production, storytelling, etc in order to grab the attention of peers and consumers of our output. So to answer your question, yes, the demands of SM can be a huge drag on the development of our musical aspirations. SM is yet another skill set that needs to be mastered along with Business skills, Marketing savvy, financial management, if running a band: Personnel management, etc.

On the one hand IG has allowed me to connect to some incredible musicians that I didn’t know of, like you or Cecil Alexander. On the other hand, I gotta fight against loosing time, focus and comparing my playing and myself to others, so that ends up being toxic for my mind as a musician and as a person. Too much noise. Little music in general. All flashy stuff. To get out of it apart from using it less and less, I’m practicing on guitar more and more, and listening to real albums

I would say for the most part it's enriched mine. I decided to get serious about guitar thanks due to channels like Darrell Braun, JonIsJustTooLoud, MusicIsWin and many others. But often I find myself over-enriched. These are such creative guitarists and they're all so good that I'll often begin despairing because there are ideas there I encounter that I'd never considered. As a result, instead of playing what I'd like to hear, I'll try playing what others have come to expect (or at least trying really hard to do so). I'll get a melody in my head and can't reproduce it on the fretboard because I'm "just not there yet" or find myself so completely blocked that even doing simple finger exercises can leave me frustrated. After ten minutes or so I'll just sit my guitar back on the rack knowing full well I may never get the chance to play what I had in my head again.

I've benefitted a lot more from a focus on networking with musicians locally and in-person, in terms of finding work and an audience as a guitarist than I ever did with the sort of scattershot approach of platforms like IG. Of course, IG has its benefits: I use it as a kind of CV to demonstrate my musicianship and stay in contact with other musicians; it's also how I found Ben's playing and got exposed to a lot of the interesting ideas that make up his unique musical style. But I don't have the motivation to maintain a regular content-upload schedule and I've just come to terms with the fact that I have different strengths and opportunities outside of social media.

Spot on, Ben. The part about comparing yourselves to others is what I believe to be most damaging to me, personally. However, I have also been inspired by several videos and connected with some great musicians. I think the pressure to always pump out content is also another nagging negative about instagram for me. I have found that the best way to go about it for me is to only post when I'm feeling inspired about something, and if I'm really enjoying the sound of something, I will post it. If I set out to post on instagram from the beginning, before I'm even warmed up and enjoying myself, I find it hard to relax and focus, or to be creative, and that's because I'm thinking about the audience first. I think the best way is to let it flow and then share it after.

Fair points, Ben. I'm not doing Instagram but YT and certainly your channel has enriched my playing and overall knowledge. Although I am having a hard time limiting myself... There's 27 tabs open on my browser, all on things I think I need to learn. Too much information, and too little focus. We may have seen the best times of guitar on social media. The biggest hype might be over and it's fair to addime that if you're not established by now as a musician, it'll be hard to generate income just from YT clicks.

There is an overabundance of guitar playing ideas available from the internet. I limit myself to one per day or two, if it's worth trying out I will. If then it seems valuable I might add it to my practice and then into my playing, but filtering is required. It used to be much harder to get soloing ideas, you either had to know someone who was really good, be going to the conservatorium or buy some really expensive video tapes or books. Everyone should try looping a video tape to get a particular phrase in a solo right...they would appreciate how easy things have become.
