He probably genuinely thought it was a good present.
Baldrick has a fair bit of cunning in the first series, a little left in series two, and then starts to decline in wits (and ascend in comedy) in the last two series.

that was how Blackadder 4 ended. Baldrick had a cunning plan but didn't get the chance to try it. Or tell it.
That seasons Baldrick was a gap filler between the first outing's brainy Baldrick & the later dunderhead ones. The Baldrick here was a mix of both.

I'm no actor but how on earth they did this with a straight face is beyond me, I can only imagine the number retakes they had to do.

Must have you can tell by the audience, no way are they reacting so little at watching for the first time theyv mustv seen it go on for awhile.
(This is a late reply) He discusses this elsewhere on RUclips and (British TV producers generally do not like multi takes) and said they would do max 1 retake, and generally use the first. It took 2 hours to put less than edited 30 minutes in the can, which is moving fast as you have to include technical setups (blocking and light checks, etc.) in that remaining 90 minutes, and the union crew is not exactly overly obliging if things are running long.
As an Aussie I always thought it was hilarious that the paradise they went to where their captain was eaten by cannibals and they brought back a “stick” was clearly Australia

She was out of this world in that show. 10 out of 10.
I love the childishness, craziness, silliness and emotion of her. She's so funny. There was a woman at my college who acted like this, one minuet she's all happy, the next she's in a psychotic bizarre rage. She's such a good character and one of my all time favourites in a comedy like this. Just the way she speaks and acts with such emotion and flamboyance. Definitely the best character in the programme. Marinda Richardson is such a good performer.

Trivia; Sir Walter Raleigh was played by Simon “Arthur Dent” Jones , and Captain Rum (not seen in this clip) was played by the immortal and infamous Tom Baker (the Fourth Doctor)
I can only imagine how long it took to record one half hour show with writing this superb and the actors constantly bursting into laughter trying to get the lines out. Particularly when dealing with a slip of a girl with absolute power. Blabbing on way to the block. Priceless

This episode contains one of the greatest lines in comedy history. Raleigh: Why around the hope the rain beats down so hard it makes your head bleed. Blackadder: So some sort of hat is probably in order.

Baldrick seemed to get dumber with every series. In the original he was actually smarter than Blackadder.

It might have happened that way too. He eventually went to the block in 1618 during the reign of Elizabeth's heir, James I, 15 years after her death.

It’s hilarious that Blackadder was gone for over 2 years, and survived being killed and eaten, only to almost die by the queen being insane.
Luckily Baldrick was there to save them. Showing how much this version of the character is more resourceful than his counter parts.
I remember when I saw the first episode of this season for the first time when it was repeated on BBC2 in 1998, and loving Miranda Richardson's Queenie, and being really disappointed at the end of the episode, because I thought she was a one off character, and we wouldn't see her again. Imagine my delight when the next episode was shown the following week.

@MumblingMickey sorry, but Elizabeth was NOT bald. Many history books I've read on her - 14 at last count - talked of her having long greyish red hair under her wigs. It's Hollywood that protrayed her as being bald.

@rwos14 dunno about that... if you consider that painters usually give a monarch a 'flattering' look then you still have to say Elizabeth was a bit of a car chaser!
Plus she was bald (like most Elizabethan nobility).
My guess is the reason she never married was all the men she could marry were too dangerous, and all the ones she wanted to marry weren't noble. She also might have been infertile OR this could have been a rumor that stopped suitors.
Either way she was a brilliant leader.
