    One of the first NES games I owned as a kid in the early 90s, I spent the Summer of 1991 trying to master its surprisingly intricate gameplay. This was before I'd ever even heard of the SNES, so the graphics and gameplay seemed top notch to this nine year old. The story, including the comic book in the manual, was written by industry veteran Steve Englehart who wrote Marvel and DC's biggest books in the 70s and 80s and it shows. Even in 8 bit, the world of Rad Gravity feels remarkably fleshed out and real. Wish they'd release this one on the Switch already!

    Honestly one of my favourite games of all-time. I love that each planet has it's own gimmick, and most of the boss battles are puzzles figuring out how to defeat them instead of just hitting them a bunch.
    It is a shame there isn't more music variety, but I think the music that is in the game is pretty good! The title theme... maybe not so much but it is nostalgic for me if bad lol.
    Would love to see this pop up on the Switch NES app, but hey it did get re-released for the Evercade a few years back. It's why i bought it. 😅

    Rad Gravity looks like the early career of Captain Sternn. Also, the music gave real Maniac Mansion vibes and, wouldn't you know, the composer, Dave Warhol, worked on both games. He's apparently considered something of a sound chip savant, and has credits going back to the Intellivision.

    my dad was of the era of Buck Rogers style space stuff and so he saw this weird retro-styled space buttchin guy on a video game shelf and bought this game for my birthday. I played the hell out of it because I didn't have anything else, and did enjoy some of the aspects of it and the weird stuff it did, but ultimately couldn't make it past like...world 3? the volcano world? whatever, got stuck in a hole and gave up eventually and without the internet or anything back then, couldn't get any further. then sold my NES and games and that was the end of that. really neat concepts for an obviously way too ambitious for the time title, though. Also, thought the title theme was WILDLY ambitious, again, trying too much with too little. a shame Tim Follins didn't have a crack at it.

    • @Norvo82
      @Norvo82 28 дней назад

      @@AStandsForFrench Yeah 😀 Very relatable. It took me weeks to realize these worlds weren't meant to be played in sequential order. Volcania was the third planet you were able to reach, but it was actually the next to last you could finish because you lacked a ton of health, armor and equipment to get out of that hole.

    This game really could have used the 16-bit treatment ala Super Metroid upgrade from Metroid. There's something really cool about being an adventurer traveling through space, visiting planets, doing quests, upgrading your inventory and health. And it could probably do with some updates to mechanics, maybe have some space battle levels or boss battles of Super Metroid scale. Just thinking about it makes me miss that era.

    I played a lot in this game as kid (and my mom also play it often back than). I only have game without manual and I don't was experience with english, but gameplay could be fun without it. It's ambition and weird game, but it have so much content and gimmicks. It's rare to see such game that can have decent controls.
    Controls are tight, and jump can be very sensitive. Don't know how you need to know that you can fall slower at screen transition if you hold jump button.
    Bosses are unique, give a little fun. Still don't know how you need to deal with giant robot goat. I just squish myself under platform and throw crystal to robo-lady. Sometimes crazy projectiles can hit you but often it can't reach you.
    I still love boss fight with Agathos (second last boss). He plays fair and you can find safe spot to deal good damage. It's only annoying to wait when he expose himself. And I still hate last boss. This zero gravity controls make it's hard to guide boss's rocket. I don't finish this game because of this boss back then(only on emulator).
    This game also have tons of various and sometime obscure secrets. I think I got like 85% of them without help of internet (I missed few healthbars and upgraded crystal grenade). Don't even know how my mom found white armor(which is best armor) in last level. Maybe she just stumbles on it or use some password. I later discover it by myself when tried to check some walls. If you know that this armor exist, it's not hard to find it. I think one teleport room can hint you at it.
    Which is not easy to find is healthbar on planet with flying islands, turtles and annoying birds. I just fall into river because of one of this birds and was surprised. This room have some letters or abbreviation (and I still don't know what this is reffered to). If you need hint of this specific spot that you need to fall - it's right under brown planet in sky.
    One healthbar that was hiden in Lava planet I only saw in one YT video and author just use some bug to enter to it, so I don't know legit way to reach it.
    One funny thing is teleporter weapon that you will get in later part of game. This thing not only OP, but can break game in some ways. If you sit right to wall and throw it, it sometimes clip into wall, and you can teleport to wall. Keep doing that - now you can travel through walls! But only horizontally. If you reach level boarder - who knows where game decide to throw you? It will not break, but you will end up in some room in this planet surly.
    In last level you can skip some teleporters in room with bunch of teleporter doors. But you only clip diagonally down.

    The screens on those computers he logs into look just like those of the Commodore 64's default screen.
