Imagine if Jim Lee returned to Punisher for Marvel and did his inking like that?
I remember being completely blown away by the art style Jim Lee used in this book. Unlike anything he had ever done and still to this day. I just wanted him to draw like this from now on. Lee was my art god back in these days and this was the last time i was shocked and stunned by how amazing the art was. Everything since has sorta been more of the same (while still being amazing) but i have never been as move by his art as i was HERE.
I was so happy when he did another Deathblow short story couple years back in a 25 years of Wildstorm Special.
I love how pretty much every ad in this comic is for another Image boondoggle. Doom's IV never came out and the Image half of Deathmate was so terribly delayed it killed all momentum on the crossover. And of course, the rest of Darker Image never materialised. At least WildCATs Trilogy showed up in a relatively timely fashion...
Just stumbled onto your channel. I'm stoked that there are other artist out there that analyzed comic book art the way I did when I was a teen. And also, fuck Brandon Choi, for wasting Jim Lee's art for non sensical writing during the Wildstorm days.
Bought this new in college, The Maxx I was so intrigued and confused but wanted some more. Bloodwulf How is someone not getting sued? Deathblow was just as you described, but I couldn't put my finger on it at the time. Good review!
That half nunchuck, half gun reminds me of the Nintendo Wiimote lol.
i have been a fan of The MAXX since liquid television. So dark and creative. Definitely my favorite hero!
i bought this when it came out.. still have it in mint cond along with gen13 The Maxx 1, Maxx 1/2 and maxx vs pitt.... still chasing the glow in the dark issue 1 however...
I love your reviews, how much is this issue worth in mint condition?
Does it have a barcode on the cover? that's the one that's worth the most since it was less produced.
Great stuff guys! Loving these Way-Back Machine videos. I bought everything Image put out from day one and loved it. The stories weren't Maus or Watchmen but I remember them being fun. Lost my collection to a fire in 2011 but I've been slowly rebuilding a box of early Image stuff. Good and bad, I think it's an important mini-era in comics history.
I got this on the shelf. Also just finished rereading the Maxx.
I remember Frank Miller writing an editorial saying he was insulted by Lee's homage to his Sin City work in this comic. He said he wasnt flattered at all and that Lee should just stop. Might be the reason why we never saw this style again- although you see remnants of it throughout his work today.
i bought this a while back i could just sense the kayfabe effect
there must have been a billion of these things printed. I think i have 5 or 6 just laying around lol
You are on a roll guys!
Remember busying this so well....had really high hopes.....
And please Go on a do a Deathblow special....that would rock!
Y'all are in a hella good mood flipping through this.
The complete Deathblow, Darker Image story was printed in Deathblow 0, but did you know that the Maxx, Darker Image issue 2 story is printed in Maxx 23 pg 7-13
this would go great with my back issues of the maxx.
Great analysis on Darker Image. Thanks for your imput, gentlemen.
I’m excited to hear this
If you want to see Jim Lee trying to do Miller's Dark Knight, check the b&w backup strip by him and Warren Ellis in Gotham Knights #1.
Exactly. There shouldn’t be that much text on any comics page period. It’s weird. Sucking the momentum of any comics read.
How bizarre. I picked this up for free at my local shop's Bogo Halloween sale this year. Had never seen it before and now here we go.
I loved The Maxx on MTV! I felt like I got the deeper stuff.
But what trading card did you get?!!! The people need to know!!!
The Deathblow story from Darker Image is completed in Deathblow #0. Jim Lee doesn’t finish drawing it and it is not worth searching out.
Everyone was exited about Deathblow. Jim stopped doing that style in response to Frank Miller's remarks in the letter column of Sin City criticizing Jim and Scott McDaniel (I think others were mentioned too).
I must have owned like 3 copies of this book. I loved the maxx portion and the cheesiness of blood wulf.
Bummer to hear you guys being so negative on this one.
Jim Lee does a nice blend of his own style and Sin City's in a story in Gotham Knights (collected as Batman: Black & White Vol 2) called "To Become the Bat", written by Warren Ellis. Glad he took another crack at it, cuz this time it works.
So right, on Brandon Choi: luckiest dude in comics (at that time)! Wish my best friend was a comic book artist superstar!
Ah yes...the Gun-chuck
That panel where bloodwolf is running away while shooting at fable [fake cable ] reminds me of the grinch
I just got this bad boy Al sealed cover would it be worth something
I got 9 copies - all sealed! The one that's really worthy, though, is the Newsstand! If yours has a bar code on the cover, then BOOM!!!
When I first bought the early issues of deathblow I thought some one had made a mistake with the artist. It just didn’t look like Jim Lees art.
20 year old kids got hold of a computer.... 😂
I got this in mint condition in package ... what's it worth?
I owe a great deal artistically to Deathblow, it pains me to admit.
Anyone have a full list of Ed's collaborations with Harvey Pekar?
The maxx is the shit..bring him back.
I got spoiled early on in life with comics by my uncle so the image style never quite did anything for me. But I knew Sam Keith was something special.
I was a comic book fan since the early 70s and by the time this early Image stuff was being published, I was really into Alex Toth, Milton Caniff and other classic cartoonists, so this realllllly wasn’t in my wheelhouse. I did appreciate Sam Kieth but Rob Liefeld and his ilk made me hate modern comic books at the time. Aside from black & white indy books like Love & Rockets and Lowlife, about the only early 90s superhero comics I actually liked were things drawn by guys like Mike Weiringo and Mike Parobeck.
Man I wasted a lot of money on those shitty Image comics back in the day. I think the Alan Moore SUPREME stuff was the first Image book with an actual satisfying story that was worth a shit to me. Only Spawn and Savage Dragon were telling actual stories in the first two years, but they weren't really my cup of tea.
I'd be really interested in hearing what you guys have to say about the Director's Cut of Strange Adventures #1. I really appreciated seeing both the pencils of Mitch Gerads and Evan "Doc" Shaner's art as well as Tom King's script. Nice little behind the scenes look at a comic that I'm really enjoying.
tom king sucks so bad
only the maxx was memorable
This stuff is pretty bad. It was at this point where I swore off all of the Image stuff. It was fluff and little else and I was coming from a place where storytelling was everything and this stuff just felt so flat. Hellshock was just about the worst of it which is a shame because i dug Jae Lee and had met him at a show i was selling at in Boston. he was affable and a few of us all talked comics with him and he was definitely old school. I expected more...
I never saw Darker Image issue 2 - 4
No one did. They don’t exist
I hate Cartoonist Kayfabe. Nothing but comics...
