Easy way to remove truck cab by yourself! Using a hoist and ratchet straps.

- All you need is a hoist, ratchet straps, and 2x4's. Strong saw horses are nice to set the cab on. The ones I used were tin from a hardware store.

Good idea with the orange straps ,I'll be doing the same. My cab was tilting big time, so much that it almost flipped the cab and hoist over lol.

To anyone curious, I had no damage to the fresh paint where I had put the moving blanket between homemade wooden cradle and cab roof.

What’s your opinion on using just straps and no wood ?
@@114wildfire I think it's a possibly, however I was afraid if I only used straps on the roof that it would cause damage to the roof skin considering all the weight that its holding. Making the cradle, I believe ensures an even weight distribution out towards the edges of the cab where the cab is more structurally sound.
Great idea. I would probably try to beef up that bolt that's attached thru the chain...would like to use something stronger, but I'd have to figure out what. If that snaps it's over. Otherwise, this seems like a good setup. I like the idea.

I tryed lifting a cab before didn’t go well still looking at dent where the door closes 🤣
Wonder if this will work for my 91 f150... i might try this out before I hoist of garage rafters. I'll keep yuh posted. Thanks

OMG, I'm a lady mechanic, and my 65 truck recently caught fire and I'm trying to accomplish a full cab swap . I have a junky come a long ,. A long cable , and a heavy duty floor jack. I'm not located under a tree, and trying to fig out a possible way it can be done,. Or what could be built from scraps to help. I just don't know ? Hi i need some help with mine right now my axles are off and its just frame but ill probably put axles on to do this. Can anybody send me some info on making the brace and where to put straps i have a 1986 chevy k 20 build and is it easier to paint cab on frame or off right now i have cab off but i have to paint frame first
I took a full size cab of a 57 pick up by jacking up one side and slipping a 8 -4x5 across then lifted the other side I put a 4 x across the front and another across the rear. I just kept jacking it up and setting cement blocks under the 4x 4’s till I could roll the frame out from under the cab. It was tedious but it was a one man show.

Is it really necessary to remove the fender supports in the front?
Meanwhile in the Mountians which fender supports are you refering too? The reason nothing is attached to the cab is bc I pulled the cab off to paint, I am doing a complete halfass restore on the s10 and due to this being a learning process, i took off everything that was bolted onto the cab. Nothing was removed that was welded. Other than that, i did not remove anything i would consider a fender support, i merely removed the whole fender/front end assembly.
i gotta figure somthing out for my 77 gmc but i have the front end still on the cab wonder if some straps would balance it out like u did here also i might have a problem putting it on my mud truck it has a 12 inch lift maybe swap to stock tires?? or even take em right off n put on stands?
Doug Martell I think using straps to balance is a great way to solve countering the weight and movement of the vehicle while on the hoist. I would be careful with front end still on truck only bc the front end is already so front heavy bc of the dash, firewall, and multiple things connected; thus creating more weight. If it were me and the truck wasent freshly painted id give the straps a try. The biggest liability is if the straps fail, or wooden support for cab failed. Something to think about reinforcing if front end is still attached. Hoist can handle it but can the straps and wooden support I made handle. Thats what id ask myself. If it is a newer paint job i personally would take the front end off. Only bc I spent so much time painting. Yes, i would remove wheels and place the frame on multiple jackstand. Probably 6 or more to be safe, especially if motor and drivetrain is still attached. Any other questions feel free to ask! Thanks for watching and hope this helped!
When I removed the cab on my 01 s-10 I took the wheels off and set it down on car dollies under the drums and rotors. That way I could easy move the frame out from under the cab itself. Hope this might help someone
