Nice trip! You're right about renting a car and getting out into the countryside. My wife and I have done that many times and seen many sites that tours skip, such as Erice in Sicilia.

Sometimes it’s to Trevi Fountain and other times is a small roadside cafe. Most of the time, it is something in between. The wonder and beauty of Italy and the people never cease to amaze us!
