Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Of all gaming genres, it's perhaps the versus fighting game with which SNK's Neo Geo became most synonymous. Fatal Fury, King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown all morphed into prominent and successful franchises, and it's the latter which is the focus of this particular longplay.
Each franchise differentiates itself from the others by focusing on a specific feature-set, and I feel this is true of Samurai Shodown. This is a game focused on one-on-one duels between combatants armed with swords and other melee weapons, where timing and precision striking becomes key to victory. Each character's weapon and fighting style has an impact on the tactics required to defeat opponents, something I noticed during my playthrough. By no means sedantary, the combat feels slower paced than, where precision is rewarded with a higher 'Hitting Percent' bonus at the end of a round.
I'd consider Samurai Shodown to be in a tranche of games I'd consider to be second generation Neo Geo titles. The graphics, artwork and animation are all noticeably improved when compared to launch titles, with developers really hitting their stride with the machine. Whereas Fatal Fury looks rather outdated and simplistic, Samurai Shodown still looks great, even today. The multiple sequels would continue to improve artistically and visually, but for the first entry in the franchise, it still looks great.
Perhaps the final thing I wanted to touch on is the level of violence. While this lacks the more overt, spine-tearing ludicrousness of Mortal Kombat, the combat in Samurai Shodown quite visceral. Hitting fleshy opponents with sharp objects elicits a sanguine spray from the wound, whilst landing a final blow results in the game pausing momentarily to really let the impact of the blow, as well as the sense of victory -- or loss, if you're on the receiving end -- sink in, followed by a fountaining geyser of blood from the defeated opponent. On a rare occasion, the fallen combatant is cleaved in two, and despite the absence of blood, it's actually quite shocking. The body is wrapped in a straw shroud and carted off-screen during the victory screen by a pair of flunkies, which is all rather macabre.
From presentation to gameplay, Samurai Shodown is a fine fighting game, one that's likely to appeal to a broader audience. Without the need to memorise a zillion combinations and have pro-gamer reaction speeds, this is a fun game with satisfying combat mechanics.

Everything is perfect in this series: the stages, the characters, the gameplay, the artwork. And to think they got it even better in the second instalment. Kudos to 90s SNK.
Don’t forget 3 & 4, and 5 Special, which improves over original 5.
@@AlfonsoECruz 1 and 2 were the best. The later ones had bash/slash and stupid rush combos which make no sense for some of the larger weapons. And don't get me started on the weird grabs that's like Iori Yagami's special grab.

Like the Street Fighter videos, always shown with popular/strongest characters. How about winning with Hanzo, Earthquake, Ukyo or Rose, Guile or Sagat (although the last 2 are quite strong) Blanka or Zangief or Jubei?
1 to 4 are the only "Samurai Shodown" games which can be said to be original. After that the staff and the company name changed and then the saga was never the same again.
The music.....my god the music brings so much nostalgia
Graphics still look great even now! Beautiful art style! 😎👍
This is one of my favourite games EVER made!
The effects and voices from SS1 are by far the best in series. I will never forget how impressed we were the first times we saw this legendary classic. Luckily, we were still kids enough to play Samurai Shodown with broomsticks and wooden swords.
Happy 30th Anniversary Samurai Shodown
When I was a little kid, like many others, I used to love going over to Grandma's House.
She had a Super Nintendo at one time, she was very Christian so she only had a few games, the Disney Aladdin and Lion King, Donkey Kong Country, Zelda, the appropriate ones.
Then there was Samurai Shodown... Just... In the mix, not sure how or why, but it was there and was the only game I played at her house.
I might have asked to keep it so she didn't find out you can cut people in half.
She was a Saint for sure, God Bless you Mary Jane.
Nice memories. Gladly the SNES version didn't have the "cut-in-half" fatality feature. It barely had blood. It lacks the dramatic slashes and the blood geyser... It was a censored version but still fun to play. What I personally couldn't forgive was the permanent zoomed OUT scenarios. That made the characters look way too small...
LOL I was a kid when this game came and I mistakenly confuse the main character of this game to Goku and that's how I became a Dragon Ball Z fan
July 7, 1993-samurai shodown is my ultimate fighting arcade ace! I mean, it has it all! Sword fights, bloodshed and the whole nine!
The game that started it all. While I prefer Samurai Shodown 2 to the first one in terms of gameplay and overall presentation, this one has a very special place in my heart. I always go back to check the awesome quotes before each fight like the one from Earthquake "I'll clean my teeth with you" LOL. Such a classic...
I was just watching the footage back and there are so many little details you miss when playing. I just noticed the devs added a clanking chain sound effect whenever Earthquake gets knocked down - great attention to detail!
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Indeed. They also have a ton of easter eggs and reference to other SNK games or movies in general. For example, in Samurai Shodown 2 in Gen-an's stage there is a xenomorph being cooked in the background. Here, like you showed, you are about to fight Mai Shiranui in Haohmaru's ending movie. Great stuff!
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Would you like to do Art of Fighting Arcade All Characters No Damage Ice Pillar Smash Only Longplay and Art of Fighting 2 Arcade All Characters No Damage Strength Training Only Longplay and Art of Fighting 3 Arcade All Characters No Damage Longplay if that's okay?
The winning phrases are different in Japanese and they make more sense. For some reason they made them dumb in the English version.
*Massa esse jogo,a VOZ, os gráficos atrás da luta...que me deixava fascinado .ipome só NOSTALGIA .*
Man I remember being at an awe when I first saw this game at an arcade.
I miss my childhood
When you were ten years old in the early 90s at the arcade this was the game
facts
I loved this game I use to play it when I was 7 lol, thank you for uploading it I was at an age where I didn't care about the name for pixelated games.
Very cool! I always loved this game. Definitely never completed it myself, but what a great game!
The final blows of the Charlotte fight were pretty cool, good work!
wow , welcome back in glorious 1993 !
Para mí esté fue el mejor samurai shodown los gráficos la música
The best game on neo geo ! Back in the day and night !!!!! 👍
And the 3DO which had better graphics then the Neo Geo version .
Sa me rappelle mon enfance quand le jeu est sortie, je m'était acheté la neo geo juste pour Samurai Shodown, même si SNK ont eut des jeux fabuleux sur leur console par la suite, celui-ci restera mon jeu préféré.
"Life is a dream... and it's morning for you" plain badassery
because of the poor translation, there were many funny lines.
This one was not one of them!
My other favorite "I thought I was dead but I thought I was Cleopatra too" (if my memory still serves me, its been a while :)
"I'm a samurai. A rebel guy. We must part." I cry every time
The first time I saw this intro……… dude, my life changed.
This gameplay sure brought back many great memories as a kid.
Such a great classic game 😀
Vivemos a melhor época dos jogos!!!

I used to play this religiously as a kid at our local pizza place.
I loved this game as a kid
This game is beautiful.
Together with SS 2 it's one of the best Neo Geo games from that era
Congraturation
Earthquake is actually shorter than Tam Tam, ironically.
Tam Tam = 285 cm
Earthquake = 280 cm
Ah! memories!
Excelente video.
do you know what it was like to play with swords and ninjas? it was madness!
Iza! Jinjouni! Ipponme! Shobu!!
Ah, c'mon, Ukyo! You've got a great (and cheap) moveset! You didn't even show up!
SNK were the kings of the arcade in the early '90's, though. I always enjoyed playing on the Neo Geo cabinet at our local pizza place.
Legendary game !
nice playthrough
Robert Smith is the final boss, who knew. Cool.
the golden age of Japan for everything
No level 8 difficulty? Such a great game deserves a better presentation.
Samurai Showdown Longplay (Neo Geo) [QHD]
The SNES version is very accurate. The graphics, detail and even sequences. The music is good, but the MSU1 feature turns the game into a very close srcade experience. Too bad it was zoomed out permanently. That with the MSU1 arcade music could have made it perfect...or almost....for a 16-bit home console.
Break dance practice, RUclips
I played this as a kid at fudruckers hamburger place i put so much quarters to get my initial on top lol

OMG OMG this is it! Cool as f*in' cucumbers 🥒 all of it. Fallin' petals from the start, me not understanding Japanese 🗾 and the game just looking/sounding and playin' like an SOB. Have the SEGA Genesis port and love to whip out my pixelated katana from time to time 😉
I have the Sega Genesis version too. A great fighting game in the Genesis library.
เคยเล่นเป็นตัวhaomaruสนุกมาก
Muy excelente
35:30 is that supposed to be mai?
The intro,,,,
Why don't understand is the that there s a power gauge but no super moves ! NB been playing SNK games including Samurai Showdown since 96 arcade cabins and later on my PC
The Power gauge in SS1 was only for stronger attacks. Normal attacks in SS are already so deadly that maybe they think that super moves weren't needed before changing their minds in the sequels. It's interesting that the super moves in SS2 weren't super deadly (except the final boss super move), and the focus was about breaking the enemy's weapon.
BUEN JUEGO .......... !!!
Muito bom
✌️Try to always remember what a Milky way actually handed to you servants my apologies!💐 but now he hates everyday too Iceee❄️💋…and Leon it’s 10,000? Hours right Usher? My my my the Hart my edits?

Samurai Shodown II was much better in gameplay but none ever reached the atmospheric epicness of the first game.
