  • Sequoia National Park, located in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, is home to some of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, including Moro Rock. This massive granite dome offers breathtaking views and an unforgettable hiking experience for visitors. Standing at approximately 6,725 feet (2,050 meters) above sea level, Moro Rock is not only a popular destination for adventurers but also a geological marvel shaped over millions of years by erosion and tectonic forces.
Moro Rock was formed during the Cretaceous period, roughly 100 million years ago, as magma cooled and solidified beneath the Earth’s surface. Over time, the surrounding softer rock eroded, leaving behind this massive granite monolith. The rock, towering over the Kaweah River valley, has long served as a prominent landmark for both native peoples and European settlers.
In the early 20th century, the idea of making Moro Rock hike more accessible was realized when the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed a stairway leading to its summit in 1931. The stairway, made with local granite, blends with the natural landscape and provides a safe yet thrilling route to the top.
Climbing Moro Rock: The Stairway to the Sky
The climb to the top of Moro Rock is an exhilarating yet relatively short hike, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors. The trail consists of 400 steps carved directly into the granite, winding up the steep face of the rock. It’s a one-way, 0.25-mile (0.4 km) hike that ascends about 300 feet (91 meters) from the parking lot at the base to the summit.
