- In 2023, in spite of record shattering snowfall in the Sierra mountains of California, I am undertaking a thru-hike attempt of the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to complete my Triple Crown! Follow along as I see just how far the trail will let me go!

Thanks again for the great videos.
I have hiked and backpacked in the high sierras for many years in the summer warmer years without snow.
I have been up above the Mono pass at over 12.000 feet in late July about 20 years ago. There were at least 5 nights that dropped
to the low 20s with our water freezing outside the tent overnight.
I always carry enough clothing to survive nights well below freezing. I put on my sweatshirt, rain jacket, heavy sleeping pants, heavy wool sox, polar fleece jacket, warm poly hat, gloves, with my sleeping bag.
I would even walk around before sleep to get warm blood to my feet. I fall asleep fast with warmer feet. I can not sleep with cold feet.
Even in mid summer the temps in the sierras can fall over 10 degrees below freezing. Usually, it is at or just below freezing nearing 10,000 feet in the
summer.
your situation in melting snow or slush it is very difficult to stay dry and warm. You can not live with a soaked down sleeping bag, clothing or boots in temps even nearing freezing.
Yeah it definitely takes some work to make sure that we keep the cart before the horse out here, and keep our gear performing as we need it to. In 99% of camping situations a sleeping bag is mostly for comfort, you're absolutely right that out in serious mountains and serious conditions, it's more like safety equipment
Thank you for the lovely shout out! So proud of you and all you’re doing especially through the tough Sierra’s! Woot! Also Shade is one basass woman!!
Dude Shade is a STUD. BTW I have an elaboration on sunscreen coming on Day 98!
So nice you remembered! Will await your SPF info!! Go Shade and Rabbit and Beat!! - Chica
Cheers, Thanks for the content. Thanks for the shout out.
Thabjs for the donation and viewership and frequent comments!
Really liking what's going on. You folks make this most difficult jaunt look very double. Learning a lot from you! Thanks and best...pops
Thanks, Pops!! There was a LOT of unfilmed "suck" in there too, make no mistake, but I'm glad if it looks approchable-- given a good mindset and what I would consider basic skills, there ain't nothin too daunting out here!
You guys are doing amazing. That trail is rough without the snow and the river crossing. Amazing to be at Agnew Meadows and Yosemite without the crazy crowds. You guys are seeing amazing things, it is tough and you are putting your best foot forward each day. Enjoy--it is even more of an adventure! Thank you for sharing with us at home who are longing for the PCT adventure.
Thanks for that!! It's great to share this adventure with folks!!
Crazy how much snow is still around 😮
It's MADNESS
@@travelinbeat I can feel it through your videos 😁
Thanks for the view of Matterhorn Peak. I climbed it a couple times. It was made famous in Jack Kerouac's book Dharma Bums. You guys are cruising!
Oh dang, thanks for sharing that tidbit!! As you may have guessed from my moniker, I have a particular affinity for Kerouac and his ilk!! Gonna have to give that one a reread
Dharma Bums is great. You might also like Gary Snyder’s classic/seminal poem Bubbs Creek Haircut, which you passed awhile ago
Love following you. Hike on.
Thabjs for following along!
Views are spectacular !
Thanks, Don!
The mountains are so amazing out there !
Glad you're enjoying the views!
Thanks for sharing into all this hard work......we love it and you! G
Thanks for following along!!
Great documentary, are temps lower than normal?
@@andynoel7484 Not sure, to be honest!
Loved the ending with Shades comment. 😂 Admire your commitment to leave no trace!
Got to, man!! She thought she was teasing me, but I'm proud of my commitment!!
see you guys start to have fun, with a lot of smiles on your faces. I am very happy for you guys
Thanks!! It's a very strange mix of fun and misery-- mercifully, the memories favor the pleasant
👍👍
if you read this before you hit south lake Tahoe hit up the red hut for breakfast and try the coconut waffles, you will not regret it.
Dang!! Missed the waffles!!
The streams are so clear. Loved the view from your tent site, Volunteer Mtn.
Just saw your fb post about being in Truckee. Well done! Is your team still together?
Wherever the mountains have called you --
Be safe; keep at it!
Thanks, Richard!! We're kind of splintering off now-- seems like all groups are splintering after Sierra. No hard feelings, etc, just different people moving at different speeds. We'll all keep in touch though
@@travelinbeat
That's understandable. Nevertheless, even if you drift apart physically, the mountains have forged in your group psyche an eternal bond.
Take care of yourself, Beat!
Looking forward to your further videos.
Great day ! Congrats on the crossings! Friends in Maine on the AT are crossing waist high water! Insane! They summited Katahdin about a week ago. Be careful out there!
Mt. K summit at the end of June? When did they start?
And congratulations to them no matter when they started.
Solid question-- I was Feb19-Jul24-- I can imagine someone going faster, but man that'd be real fast and real early!
And a job more than a hike..
@@travelinbeat I think it was Feb.2? and they summited 8 days ago. I'm not positive on the dates. but I do know they were on trail 120 days which included zero days and the approach trail as well.
Ha ha 1000 feet to think about your live mistakes :) Is 1000 feet enough? For the rest, beautiful images and especially a special tent site.
HHaha ,Fair point, Martin!!
