A Canadian who fought in WW2 told me the story of liberating a Dutch town twice, first time they liberated this town Nazi flags came down and English, US flags flew, he had to retreat due to the Nazi advance but when they overtook the town, instead of Allied flags the Nazi flag was still flying.
