    Let’s keep in mind that most of these banned moves were done at a time when the floor had no springs at all and mats were paper thin. Gymnasts needed run high speed & literally use leg muscle to jump high since floor mats had little to no bounce. In 70s-early 80s as well, the beam at Olympics was 10cm wide only (3.97 inches). They were incredible, especially Korbut, Comaneci.

    As an allstar cheerleader I find the different banned skills so interesting like in cheer we aren’t allowed to do more than a single flip or triple twists yet loads of high level athletes have ‘bounce back’ passes when that’s banned in gymnastics

      The biggest difference I've seen between the tumbling in gymnastics routines vs. cheer routines is the overall structure. Cheer routines have a tumbling section that is meant to really showcase specific tumbling skills and athletes while gymnastics is more about skill and in elite gymnastics, start value. Both sports are absolutely amazing and all of the athletes have my utmost respect, and I love to watch both. It is crazy the difference between what is and isn't allowed, though.

  • @juanitalubrano1805
    @juanitalubrano1805 2 года назад +115

    It’s crazy how the punch out to the flips going the opposite direction is a prerequisite in extreme cheerleading but yet banned in gymnastics.

    • @anicasey9868
      @anicasey9868 Год назад +2

      I was curious about this too because I could’ve sworn I’d seen gymnasts do this in recent years! It seems that a lot of these “banned” skills either organically or intentionally lose favor in routines and are rarely actually banned.
      The punch out to a subsequent floor pass, for example, is still allowed (from what I could find) but the code of points doesn’t value it enough to be worth it to do. Gymnasts will get more points by doing harder skills that require more power (and therefore need to be semi-isolated) then they will by doing subsequent passes of easier tumbling skills. Also, the nature of the subsequent passes apparently make it easier to make minor mistakes, meaning you’ll lose points on an already lower value skill. From my recollection, you’ll still see punch out skills, they just won’t often lead to a floor pass.
      However, the code of points also intentionally devalues skills that are more dangerous to discourage gymnasts to perform them. It’s not worth it to do a super difficult skill if you’re not getting much even from a perfect execution.
      TL;DR a lot of these skills aren’t technically banned, they’re just devalued (either bc they’re dangerous or bc better skills have surpassed them) meaning it’s rare to see them in competition
      The article that explained it best was “10 Gymnastics Skills From The Past That Aren't Performed Anymore” by Flogymnastics

      We know so much more now in both gymnastics and dance then we did just 20 years ago, much less 40 or 50 years ago. Horror stories about coaches sitting on athletes to force flexibility into their hips and feet… insane hours of overtraining causing repetitive damage to the body… thank goodness for science and medicine and best practices. If only they were practiced all over the globe. I would not want to be a gymnast or dancer learning in most Asian countries… or Russia… or a lot of the Balkan states. Sadly, online videos show so many coaches still using techniques most of Europe and North America abandoned a decade or more ago.

It was great my first evening one to one with a female coach, got to jump in the pit repeatedly, used the trampolines which I showed great skill's, beam also. It was so much fun. I then came back for my first session and it was obvious I hadn't had the training the girls have had and they let me know it. I was in tears. They bullied me every lesson I attended to the point I would just stand there and cry or hide in the toilets. We all start out fresh and you can't expect kids to know or be able to do everything. I hope this bullying doesn't go on today. There's always those thoughts of what if. Shame on the coaches who saw it and never stopped it also!

Side note: her coach was/is & absolute garbage human for overworking her the way he did & pushing her further than she was willing & able to go & deserves all the bad karma he’ll get for what he did to her. While it was *technically* her choice, it really wasn’t when it came down toit & it’s said that she was also pressured into doing dangerous skills by the leaders of Soviet Union which isn’t hard to believe at all. When you were talking about the Achilles tendon I cringed. I did point in ballet and martial arts and by 22 I had to have my left leg reconstructed. Achilles tendon cut and lengthened, tendon taken from my big toe to lift my arch (I was walking on my inner ankle), heal bone cut and shifted.

    They did so phenomenally spotting at the pool while doing front 1.5’s, I wonder if it made it even a little easier to transfer that spotting back to the roll outs?
    Sorry my coaching brain thinks in weird ways.

The beam had me more scared than any horror movie I’ve seen since. I love watching you guys, not when the damn beam is involved, I just listen to your shenanigans then.

    The roll outs remind me of 1&3s in trampolining. Except we go higher and open out at 12 and watch it allllll the way down to land on our back. A lot of the roll outs you did I think I've seen as prep skills at trampolining. Eg full in cruise and duck under (1 1/2 twisting 1&3) is a prep for a full full (double back with full twist in each somi).
