Fantastic vid! I love precision, and the Blues. Now you have to build a Motorcycle to attach to the new handlebars! Your wife did a great job covering the cam angles, you two make a good team. Peace.
The last time clock job I had was making heat treated pinion gears by the BUCKETFUL for NASCAR! In OKC. On Saturdays my. Boss let me do a little work on motorcycle parts for my home shop.He was impressed when they took me off a lathe and sent me to him! First thing I said was ABOUT TIME! I want EVERY manual you have on ALL these machines. It was great that I did my own homework. Made me SO much faster on the day to day work.😎
The person I really wanted to impress was my Dad who was a semi famous sheet metal worker. Union man. He didn't know I'd went from sheet metal to singer in rock n roll bands to machinist til my girlfriend told his wife on a lake party weekend! The look on his face when he got that bit of news was to me,PRICELESS.😎🎶
I kind of did the same thing a while back. 1 difference. You have access to a nice shop & a lathe. I have a welder stick, mig, tig. I took a bolt that held on my handle bars to the top triple tree down to a large hardware store. Found two large nuts with the correct thread pattern. Went home turned on my 16 inch round & belt sander. Ground each of the six shoulders down until it fit inside my bars. Slid them about a 1/4 inch maybe less in past the end of my bars. Then i just used my MIG welder. Ran a quick bead around it. Walla. Easy Peasy. I wish i had access to a large machine shop like you have. Before i could buy a torque plate that bolts onto the right side of my motor back to my transmission. I made a simplified mill. Ordered a few bits for it. And milled a 1/2 torque plate. Before i figure out what was really going on i had cracked 3 inner left side primaries. Just running way to much torque. I'm happy to see others simplifying & making things for their bikes. Good job Where was your hard hat incase the safety inspector walked by?? 😋

Tramp, I have been a machinist for 29 years, actually you don’t need to weld anything! What you should do is turn down your two pieces for a .002 shrink fit, heat up the bore of your handle bar and drop them in and they are not going anywhere! One more thing, no need to hand tap the two pieces, just put the tap in the tail stock chuck, and power tap it by sliding the whole tail stock with your tap into the bore and let it feed itself in at a slow rpm, the tap will self float and center itself, then be quick to reverse the lathe and feed the tap and tail stock out when you reach your tap depth. No need for welding and it’s cleaner looking. Another thing, after you turn down your two pieces for a .002 shrink fit, you can put Them in the freezer so they contract, get the handle bar end hot Enough with your torch, wipe the freezer frost of the inserts and they will drop in, let everything air cool down naturally, no water quenching or you may crack the bars. Whole process is five minutes!
Paul Healey why don’t you make a video. And we can all tell you what you didn’t do. Oh that’s right you don’t have a vlog. Tramp did it the way he wanted to just leave it there.
John Ramey you obviously are young and emotional. As a professional machinist I was sharing my procedure with Tramp as a friend and hopefully teaching others who watch. We all learn from each other no matter how old or experienced we are! I am very sure tramp agrees! So, put your young emotions aside, be quite open your eyes and ears and learn something!
I guess that would have saved me a lot of trouble. I'm familiar with the power tap method though. I just didn't go that route, because I wanted to be able to feel the tap bottom out in the hole.
I just cut the bottom off a set of 4 piece apes, used part of what i cut off for my cross brace, made bungs and tig welded them on flush to make a set of rabbit ears for my old neighbor
