Rob I cannot tell you how helpful this video is. I've been a QU-16 user for 7 years now in my band (I do the sound on stage). I've only ever used the 2 'main' FX engines. Now thanks to you I can utilize the other 2. I'm wanting a different reverb for the drums, so I'll be using MIX>RETURN and using that as drum sends. Previously I've been using the same engine for everything...Vocals, Acoustic and Drums. Thank you!
This is basically the way to utilize effectors in analog era. Create a post-fader mix, send it to the FX module, and then use a return channel to distribute wet signals to mains and auxes as required.
Don't forget when using FX3/4 as mix-returns , to switch which ever mix\bus you're using to "Post." They will stay "Pre" if you don't since by default they are used for monitors\IEMs. Most of the time you want FX buses to be post fader. FX1/2 are, by default, Post Fader.
Very helpful. I’m just about to jump from the QU-PAC to QU-16 and thought I would be losing two FX slots. I can utilise mix 7/8 and 9/10... never use those anyway!
@@soundadvicewithrob3083 I feel the need to get back to tactile faders. I play bass and mix monitors at the same time. Thought iPad would be easier, but its too easy to swipe something accidentally on the fly. And QU-16’s are on special at the moment in Oz. Cheaper than QuPac!
Exactly the reason that I love the QU series boards. They are the best of both worlds... ipad for those times I mix monitors and can stand on stage beside the players and set just what they want quickly. Plus a full set of sliders when I mix FOH and need to have my hands on the board but my eyes on the stage.
Thanks for this vid.... briefly looking at the features and advertisement type videos, and studying pictures to see the button layouts and such, I was thinking it was 2 FX busses, and then.2 must be used on a channel....this helps much. Can a MIX be made, such as all drums routed into a stereo mix, gutars/keys/etc to another, and vocals to a 3rd stereo mix... then those all controlled by a single fader to send into the L+R main mix? (Much like sub groups) If so, would it be possible to then add an FX like a light reverb to the vocal mix group, and then return the wet vocals to the main mix via the FX return? I think I am wrapping my head around all of this stuff... thanks to a.lot of reading and many great folks putting out videos like your channel. Thanks for the content, happy holidays...
Thx Isaiah. Unfortunately the QU16 does not have subgroups but the qu24 or 32 do. The qu16 only has DCAs which can control a group of faders but don’t offer any audio processing.
Hi, thank you so much for clarifying all these back panel options. So now, i wonder, if i use fx3 mix return to mix 5-6, will the effects go through the global processing of mix 5-6 (i'm thinking compression) ? Have a nice day everybody.
Great clear instruction. Thank you. When I record to logic, it only records a dry signal. Do you know how to record the effected signal. I want to use the qu effects and compression on the way in.
Thx for the kind words. Glad you found it helpful. The structure of the QU series creates a separate audio signal when feeding inputs to the FX engine(s). In order to record the FX you need to choose the FX return signal. The issue is that the FX return will include all channels that have been sent the that FX. Eg. If you send 4 vocal ch to a reverb FX, the FX return will be a single signal with all 4 mics included. The only way to record a single channel with FX is to set the FX to Insert. The limitation is that there are only 4 FX to use.
Great vid! One question, how do you then control how much you are sending to an aux? So for example, I generally return monitors a lower level of a given effect, so I return less to them, and the full return value to the mains. I can control that for FX1 and 2, but not 3 and 4. Can it be done?
At 9:50 I explain using the Mix-Return option. The mix you choose acts exactly the same as the existing FX layers. Simply adjust each send using that reassigned mix layer
Thanks again Rob. I have a hard time saving individual scene. Once I save one of it, it will change all the scenes. I wonder if you could give me a few words about it.
When you save a scene it’s a snapshot of the current state of every parameter on the board. Saving a scene would NOT affect any other saved scenes. When you recall a scene you do have the option to mark some parameters as safe so they won’t be recalled.
Thx Gary. The only way to setup an external fx would to use any output that you choose as the input to the FX unit. Then use a channel (or channels for stereo) as your returns. Unfortunately since digital boards don’t typically have channel inserts or direct out jacks you will have to use a mix out even for a single channel
Thanks Rob - this is great. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a Qu16. In the video you demonstrate using mix 7-8 for FX4, which will now act the same as FX1, and FX2. Does this mean it will auto-route the send to L, R main? Or, do we need to go into the routing map and select L, R, Main out? Thanks for your videos - very helpful!
Thx Dan. Glad you found it helpful. All FX Sends are available on all outputs including LR. Its simply a matter of mixing the amount of each FX using the FXReturns. Go to LR and select the upper layer and dial in the FX4 Return
Thank you for your reply Rob. If "saving a scene would affect any other scene", this mean I could not save a scene with different setting of the PEQ for different venue ?
Thx, glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately the Mute button function is global on the QU series. There is no separate function to mute channels independently in different outputs. The option is simply pull the channel fader down in mix 1 which will not affect the channel fader level in mix2
Thank you very much for the explanation! How does that work when those mix channels are designed as stereo? As you said, it just becomes a 1-to-1 relationship with the channels similar to Fx1 and 2, right? I've always been a fan of A&H products. The QU-16 is perhaps the best starter for learning digital.
Henry Van Weeren Glad you found it helpful. If you use a stereo mix, you simply add the ability to use Pan control to move the signal between the two stereo channels.
Long winded question warning. I have a QU-32. We just rang out the building and gain-staged last night. Couldn't figure out how to get the mics set up with FX more efficiently other than assigning each one an individual FX to insert for each mic. Have adjusted the effect (the same for each FX 1-4) inserted into each if the 4 mics. The issue I'm having is that when our lead is singing, whether it's our male or female lead, they sound beautiful. But when they speak in the scene, their voice is unbelievably low volume-wise. It's relatively unaffected by increasing the levels, too. They're using a Sennheiser evolution D1 wireless mic. Any suggestions on how to more effectively use the effects, mute them during speaking parts, or improve their quality while speaking?
Thx For the question John. There are certainly a few ways to approach this. First, since you have used each FX as an insert to each channel, unfortunately theres no “easy” way to bypass the FX when the talent is speaking vs singing. Typically thats what we’d do when mixing live (sinply mute the FX between songs). Since each singers is using the sameFX could you consider simply using the standard FX send and return to send all mics to the same FX? This would allow use of the mute function on the fxsend during speech
@@soundadvicewithrob3083 is that using the mix =>return function from the video? If so, then sure, I would definitely be amenable to that. How would I mute that in between?
Actually I’m talking about using the actual FX layers available right on the desk. The QU32 has physical layers for all 4 FX sends. Have you watched my video on using FX send and return layers? Just asking because the video you are quoting here is intended for QU16 only because that desk does not have physical layers for FX3 and 4. The qu32 however does have 4 physical FX layers do the description in this video would not be a common use on a qu32. Heres the first of 2 parts….. ruclips.net/video/KswT_gfQDPE/видео.html

That's my headache. Whenever I change some PEQ setting in one scene, it will change all other scenes. wish you could tell me how to do it. Appreciated.
Scenes don’t work that way (where one affects another). My guess is that your PEQ is marked as safe meaning when a scene is recalled the PEQ is not recalled. This would give the impression that your changes are part of another scene
