How to mix the band - Part 2 - Allen & Heath QU series

Why do I have FX in some mixes but not another
Really helpful! I learned a lot - Thank you for this video 🙂
Do you know anything about the PA28 analog mixer? Trying to find information on how to make a recording and understand what the BGM (Background Mode) is about. Would like to set it up to record a live band performance on a 2 track recorder.
I worked with a PA28 very briefly and that was quite long time ago LOL. I vaguely recall the BGM as simply the 2track input that output to the LR jacks but bypassed the LR faders. You could continue to play a CD etc with the LR faders off for walk-in etc. Recording would be fairly straight forward. I think there was a single Aux so simply use those controls on each channel to mix your recording independently and send the Aux output into a recorder
Is this the same process when you want a send a separate mix to USB for computer to pick up? currently our online stream is getting audio from main mix which is our output for our stage and it does not sound good online.
Since it doesn't sound like you want (and it typically wont due to other acoustic sound that happens in the live space), you're first step is to create a new mix to become the source for the stream. Then yes you can use this process assuming that you are using USB to send to the stream.
@soundadvicewithrob3083 is this the only thing we need to do on the mixer ? We tried today and didn't work
@@artmiranda8085 Yes as far as configuration goes this is it. You do of course need to make sure that you are sending the appropriate channels into Mix9-10 along with the Mix master. When you say it "didn't work" what exactly is the issue?
thanx Rob....its becoming clearer now, but...as you have sent Rev1 return to two wedges and an in -ears, do they all hear the same reverb - ie, Singer no1's reverb returned to all those monitors?
Yes. You have created a single Rev signal by sending singer1 channel into Rev1 so it the same signal being returned wherever you choose.
can some one here pls help me. Where do i plug my subwoofer in If i plug into the mix how do i bring the LR out to mix ?
There are quite a few options when running a subwoofer. Best option is to use a processor like a DriveRack that will send the correct signal to the correct speakers. Without a driverack you need to get creative. Subs could be run from a dedicated Aux... set to postfader so it follows LR levels and changes plus a hard LPF on the EQ to limit signal freq to 100mhx or less depending on your subs.

Hello. I know this is an older video. But can a matrix be used to send LR to an audio interface as livestream sound? My Qu-SB has a MTX 1-2 on the front and I want t use that to send the audio from the board to an audio interface that will talk to my livestream software. Am I understanding this correctly?
Yes. You need to assign the LR to be the source to the matrix. That matrix can then be the send to your livestream
I should add the comment that using LR as your source for streaming will most often not give you the results you want. LR is mixed based on what is heard in the physical space. There may be sound sources that are not even mic'd because they are "loud enough" in the physical space. Unless you mic that source specifically to include it in your streaming signal, it would be missing because it's not part of LR. Just something to consider
@ good point. My purpose is mostly 1-3 people talking, who are all mic’d, and some computer audio. But I will remember this if things change. Everything needs to be mic’d for the livestream to hear. 🙏🏾

Thank you for your video Rob! Is there a way to assign the FX as well? Here is my case. We're in a 3 people band and I would like every musician to have the master with the FX (that will be modified by the sound engineer) + their own mix (where we add just a bit more of a given instrument) in their in-ear monitors. Any ideas?
Thx for the question. Using the FXReturn, the FX is simply part of the output where you have added that FX. When you assign an output to a matrix the FX will be part of the output signal. (I have other videos on using FX send and return). On the question of giving each player a copy of the master, unfortunately the QU series does not provide the option to route an output into another output. There's no direct way to send the LR back into a monitor mix output. I suppose you might do it with an external splitter and bring the LR back into a channel that can be used in a mix, but I'd be cautious of creating a feedback loop.
Hi, just wondering how I would run the bass on a separate channel so I can just control it on its own rather than it been on the master L/R thanks for any help
@@TheCyberdork Are you asking about the bass guitar? or possibly a separate signal to be sent to subs?
I want to send a separate signal to the subs so I can control them individually so when turning up the main L/R it doesn’t effect them I can control them on a separate fader of possible
@@TheCyberdork Typically you could use an aux/mix to send directly to the subs. This option does allow you to send specific channels only to the subs such as kick, bass guitar etc. A better option would be using an external processor like a Drive Rack to process the full LR output into subs etc.
You made a statement that could be confusing. While discussing gain structure on the input channels, you mentioned that having the gain at zero or unity means nothing is added or subtracted from the input signal. That is not correct. Gain staging is about adjusting the input signal to line level, where the mixer operates optimally. The concept of 'unity' typically applies to the fader level-at this point, nothing is added or subtracted from the signal if the fader is set to zero.
@@djbassick Thx for comment. Let me clarify. My statement about "Gain" is actually true, but as well your statement about "Gain Staging" is also quite correct. While unity does indeed apply to fader level, it also holds true for the gain adjustment. There is actually a "zero" or unity position on the gain dial, however I should have been more clear that the "zero" position of the dial does not correlate with the zero position in the input meters. Most input signals must be adjusted up or down from the gain knob zero position in order for the signal to register correctly on the input meters. Hope that helps

Thanks for the great video! But there is one question, how to output the signal if there is no matrix outputs, like for example on the qu-pak console?
The Qu-PAc is based on the same engine as the qu32 and does actually include 2 stereo Matrix out. It is a limitation of the hardware footprint that does not include actual matrix jacks on the unit. These are only available by adding an AR168 or AR2412 expansion unit and routing the matrix to any of the output jacks on those units
@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thank you, it's interesting!
So where should all the volume faders be? At 0db?
@@Elio_1030 Volume fader position is based on how you as the engineer choose to “mix” the overall sound. Once gain is correctly set the volume fader is moved up when an instrument needs to be “brought to the foreground “ for a solo etc then moved back to its position in the mix when the solo is done and the player moves back into the ensemble. @@juanchis.investigadorsonoro It can be confusing at first. The FXSend in the upper layer is simply a duplicate copy of the FXSend master fader. Its the same as all of the Mix masters on the upper layer. They are all just duplicate copies of the master fader from each layer. The upper layer control does not "send again". Thanks a lot for your videos, really instructive. I am about to change my config (my gs-r24 is dying ;( ). I have question that I was not able to answer. Another question, if I have the XLR outs linked to the main PA but have also two sets of studio monitors how can I do it? I saw there only one alt set of stereo out for monitors ... (I am not talking about monitors for musician but studio monitors) The PA will not be used at the same time of the studio monitors. Thanks in advance!
@@philippemartignier9858 Thx for the feedback and a great question. Your choice for "sending" to the external Lexicon will depend on what signal you want to send. Since you can only route an output to matrix, it would only make sense to use a matrix output if the signal you want to send is first assigned to an output and that output is assigned to a matrix. Probably and extra and unnecessary step. You could use a mix or a group but again the specific plan on what you want to send would help make that choice. Q2: For studio monitors I would recommend using the ALT outputs. You can easily assign many different existing outputs to the ALT so could even "monitor" different sources simply by changing the assignment to the ALT. The other benefit is that ALT has a dedicated physical volume level control.

I do love your videos, you do a great job explaining and helping it to make sense. Hope my question is ok in this forum.
@@jaydaves6835 FXsends are just for … FX. They send a signal into one of the FX engines so these won’t be what you use for what you need. The easiest is to use a Mix Send for your band monitors and a second Mix for your Live stream
@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Can I then control the sound on those two Mix Sends independently from the LR?
@@jaydaves6835 Yes absolutely
This actually helped me finally understand how to set up an SQ5 for sending effects to a different mix. Now I'm sure I understand the principle, not just the procedure. Thank you for the thorough explanation.
