Leo you can run faster throw in 2 tempo runs for say 30 to 45 mins which means at a higher heart rate but NOT feeling out of breath. I would also include maybe you are but a long run up to 30ks further than the distance. You will smash that 1 hr 52min. tempo runs should not be performed by runners who are new or unexperienced otherwise you will be out of breath within afew ks. The Base is first then comes speed. You will never run long distances well if your doing sprint training and no distance work. Leo I wrote a letter many yrs ago to a british runner his name was Hugh Jones ran 2 hr 9 in London 1982 represented Great Britain he said Hayden TIME IS BETTER THAN DISTANCE. The more time the better.
Finished my first half marathon two days ago. It took me 2h 33min (still a newb, a bit overweight at 96kg). The first 10km were very good, I was feeling great, and even overtaking some people, then it hit me, my legs gave up. The last 5km were pure suffering. My cardio was ok, i could talk easily the whole time, and wasn't gasing out, it was just that my legs went full lactic acid, and I could not feel them anymore. (I couldn't walk for a day after). It dropped my pace significantly, and many overtook me. Sometimes, the running muscles may not keep up with the cardio. Anyways, a sub 2 hour half marathon is my goal now.
Not sure if you guys still read these comments, but I just ran my first half marathon and finished at 1:58:19! Thank you for all the tips you’ve given on this channel!
Good job dude! I just ran my solo half marathon (not in a competition, just by myself) and did 1:40:23. Very happy with it considering I have not ran longer than 13KM since I started running. Going to run in the actual half-marathon in April.
Thank you guys for doing this. The plan looks solid and absolutely a got workout. I would like to add something that is not a workout tip but more a mental thing. On a SUB 2 Hour half marathon, at the start line do not start up front or close to it because that's where the faster runners are. Start almost all the way in the back. During the race you will pass more people and that will give you a mental boost. If you start up front you will be passed by a lot of runners and that will feel discouraging during the race. Also. Pick a target in front of you that goes about the same speed as you and try to (slowly) catch up to it. Keep doing that during the entire race. Best time for me 1:52:18 and it actually was not that hard. :-) Felt Great.
Thank you for that! you're right, I should only focus on what I can control when it comes to my running form. From now on I'm going to use that philosophy vigorously
Hey guys thanks so much for this and all your videos. Just ran my first Half Marathon today and did it in 2.06. Super pleased and grateful for all the learning you provide on this channel.
Finished 1:49:55 in my first half marathon! Didn't really train for it, but I'll definitely do that for a full marathon. My target now is 3:30, keep a 5 min/km pace, will look into your app!
I watched this video, "Half Marathon Pacing Strategy," and "Half Marathon Race Day Tips and Logistics" repeatedly and followed the advice, and ran my first half marathon 1:48:03. Without these videos, I wouldn't have been able to do this. I can't appreciate enough. Thank you so much. I started to watch "How To Run A Sub 4 Marathon" and aim at running my first full marathon in 4 hours.
1:51:30 today for my first half marathon. Motivational story :I start and after half km a chest pain make me stop, uturn and going back home. Then i start slow pace heading home and i change my mind and i told myself to try 5k. After 5k (25min) start feeling better and i said myself :let's go for 10k. Between 7th km and 8th km i tripped and fall all over the place 😂😂😂 done my left knee and i though that's it. 3-5sec i was on the floor but i picked myself up and i said :if i will recover for next 2km I will try 21 km. I felt tired for last 5km and very tired for last 100 m 😴👆🙏
Can I just humbly ask less experienced runners that are trying a half marathon - please don’t get near the front of the pack on race day. I’ve literally seen people start walking at less than a mile in and blocking traffic and it’s so irritating to people that are trained and ready to attempt a goal. It’s good to sign up for a race but please keep in mind some people are really trying to keep a specific pace. It doesn’t buy you anything to get near the front.
DabbaYabbaDo Exactly what i was thinking last time i ran my marathon, i ran it in 2:52:00 so it is not that I’m that fast but when i want to hold my own tempo)pace i get Blocked by people who start in Front😢
ALSO, speaking as one of those runners who is not an experienced athlete (yet), stay to the side. I've always been wary of people who are out to get specific times and stuff, and staying to the side when you need to walk really helps faster people go by! Just make sure you look behind you. A quick glance won't hurt much :)
Hey guys I just wanted to thank you all for the video series on Half Marathon Training! I ran my first half this past Sunday in Düsseldorf and your series helped sooo much! I finished the race in 1:59:12. thank you again for the tips on everything, this channel has the best Information by far! The pacing tips worked perfectly for me!
Love this video and it really helped. Ran my first half marathon ever and did it in 2:03. just missed the sub 2hr, but was still happy with it. I would like to get your input on running in the heat, it was 85 when I started and got into the 90's. Is it simply dialing back the pace? Thank you all for the great videos, very beneficial.
My first half marathon was last Oct...I did it in 2:05. The course was hilly. My next one is tomorrow. Will let know how I did. Oh and I am a female in my mid fifites.
Great video and tips. Just found out that my half marathon pb was declared void as the course was 160m too short!!! Need to work extra hard to finally get under 2hrs and these tips are sure to help - thanks.
I did my first half-marathon yesterday with having only had seven weeks to train for it. I had thought based on my long runs I’d end up at around a 2:12 for my finishing time. When I got across the finish line, I ended up with 1:50:21 and left more impressed with myself than ever. I was feeling like running out of energy towards the last like 3 miles, but somehow I managed to stay at a consistent pace even with a few walking breaks in between. If I ever try this again, I will be sure to give myself more time, and I will consult your videos because they are plenty helpful.
Wow, what was your weekly mileage in training at the time? Or your previous 10k pr? I’m having the same thoughts that I’d probably run in 2h10, I’m scared of trying to go faster because of stories of crashing out too early
@@Jeyblox Weirdly enough, it was my first road race in 12 years, and only the 2nd one ever (first was a 5k in which I did 27:14). I did go on to do 2 more races the rest of that fall where I medaled in my age group in both races (3rd in a 5k with 24:36 and then 2nd in a 5-mile the very next weekend with 40:23). As for my training, I started at 15 miles and made my way into the 20’s. I only had 7 weeks to train for that half, and work ate into some of my training weeks. I’m doing that half again this fall, but this time I will be fine tuning my training. Addendum: Basically, I had to be smart about my training, but it did help I was already in a fit enough shape. As long as you do your research, you should be okay. Just be sure to give your legs 72 hours of rest before the race when you get to the taper down period.
I am shooting for a sub 2 in 3 weeks! Came close at a really hot and muggy half not too long ago. Hoping that timing with weather will help me out some too!
In September i ran my first HM @ 1:58:33 (5:33/km pace), without specifically training for it. Last year November i started running and in the meantime found my long-distance pace to be 5:45 where i feel i can go on forever. So when i went to Budapest for the HM, i went with the goal of sub-2h and did it. At the same time, i really met my limits for the first time, when i tried to push it on the last kilometer, but my legs completely refused to go any faster. That was something i've never felt before.
2 weeks ago I ran 2hrs 1 min 55 seconds..today I'm doing it again...trying to get under 2hrs..but I'm running with some good pacing runners..will let you know how it goes..
Only just found this one week out from my first half marathon! I'm 15 and have little experience running, so at the moment I'm just aiming to finish (hopefully under 2:30:00). But if/when I do another half marothon this'll be the first video I visit!
Thanks for the video, great content as always. Quick question: if your race pace is 9:00 per mile, what's your recommended pace to start out at and for about how long?
Hi - I have ran sub 2 hr (1:56:54) Chicago half marathon with the guidance & tips shared by you. I am really thankful to you & your channel. Now the only problem is that I am facing is the pain my Left Calf. Are there any specific workouts for it to recover ?
Long run question. Are you saying within the long run (at my slower pace) I should be throwing in 20-40 min at race pace toward the end of the run? thanks!!!
this would be my 5th half marathon. How important is to bring my own bottle of water and race with it vs. getting water at those stations. I've done a few half marathons where the stations are puddles of water making it very slippery and how much time should i factor out when stopping for water?? Thanks. Love your channel.
During my LSD I never had any cramping issues, but during my actual HM (did 2 already) I almost got cramped leg and I need to walk to prevent that.. as you mention, I think the reason behind this is my starting is too fast and I worn out pretty fast after 13-14km.. my best HM time so far was 2H14min, that was including 7 times walking during race.. next time I'm gonna start slowly first then build up speed after 10km
I love the videos. I am 49, and in only my 5th run EVER, today, I did 13.5 km. It was strange, as the last 3.5k seemed to take forever, and my ankles seemed to start to hurt. I don't think I was 'pushing off' the ball of my feet properly.
Hey John- That's pretty far for your 5th ever time running! I'd suggest dialing it back and going for shorter runs where you're really focusing on form (check out this video for head-to-toe technique ruclips.net/video/hMH1QYE8F7Q/видео.html&lc=Ugz4dKgUP6zVOP27wd14AaABAg) We don't want you getting injured from ramping up your mileage too quickly! There are also lots of videos on the channel about mobility and strength training that will help your body stay strong and healthy and ready to reach those longer distances in the near future :)
When I was 17 ran 1hr 16min it means increasing your miles, ok you need to run at least 60ks a wk. Do a long run once a wk longer than the distance say 25 ks with a low heart rate. Its about strength not speed. Twice a wk run with a elevated heart rate called a tempo run for 45 min but still not feeling out of breath. Natural ability is still the most important your training builds on that natural ability. British runner in the 80s Steve Jones who ran 2 hr 7 Chicago in 1985 always said you need to become strong before you get fast. As a rule when you build a house the Base is first then the walls and finally the roof. The base is your mileage that's your strength the roof your speed work track sessions 400s 1k intervals. You build on your ability over time.
Thanks for the video!Doing my first half marathon in September and I'd love to hit sub 2 hours. It's not exactly a couch to half marathon kinda situation as I have some fitness from badminton but it's definitely gonna be a challenge! I'm at the stage where I'm running 5 miles at a sub 2 hour pace (5 miles being my current long run distance). Am I going too fast on my long run? I hope to build my long runs up by a mile or so every 2 weeks.
At 5 miles, that's fine. As you get up near 10, you'll want to spend most of the long runs at a pace slightly slower and maybe building to race pace in final mile or two.
how many times a week do u do strength training? Is strength training at the gym absolutely necessary for runners? If yes what kind of workouts will help achieve a sub 2 hour half marathon ?
VIDEO IDEA: Hi, Im a proud subscriber of you guys, a sub 36min 10,000m PR and I'm also currently struggling with something called "Osgood schlatter disease" and I was wonder if maybe you could make a video about this problem, and how to achieve the fastest possible recovery? Thanks! Proud subscriber, Josh.
Step 1: don't be totally out of shape. Step 2: Run it. I've done 22km in 2:10 after a work day, on an empty stomach, through wind and rain. I'm not super fit, just average. Ok, Me knees didn't work for two days, but it still was a worthy experience for a first try.
Just ran my first half and got 5:55/ km or 2:09 min after only running for about 3 weeks although im an avid hiker and always have been in decent shape. Focusing on breathing is my main help
I did my 7th Half yesterday and I finally got below the 2:30 mark. I Really would love to get a sub 2 half but I lack time and I have no one to run with. Any recommendations on what I could do to get closer? I can keep up a steady 11:10mm for the entire distance but I do Run/Walks of 45:45.
As your comment is from quite a while ago, not sure if my reply still helps, but what helped me in addition to the "typical runs" mentioned in the video (my speed kind of hit a plateau at about 2h 15min for half marathon), that 2-3x a week (every time after strength training for me, but just whenever you're not doing any other type of training run, at least not a long one) I go on the treadmill - just makes it easier to regulate the speed - and run 1km on really the max I can do for that, then 500m about 1km/h faster and 250m really as fast as I possibly can with about 250m of walking in between those intervals - but just experiment with something similar to this, whatever works best for you. This way I cut about 20 minutes off my half marathon time with honestly not too consistent training or any specific training plan.
Just finishes my first half marathon tbh with not allot of specific training in 2 hours and 28 eight seconds with 247 meters of elvetion gain feeling annoyed with the time tho but sitting here (in pain) wondering if this counts as allot of elvetion gain (for a half marathon)
Hi - I have pace around 10:30 min/miles. I want to run sub 2 hr half marathon on 23rd September 2018. Its only one week from today. How I can do that ?
Helpful. Just did a 15k and next goal is Half. Question: intra-race hydration, energy gel....do most runners need it for the half or just you just worry about it pre-race? I usually avoid h20 stations and never have carried energy gels.....
Good question! It'd probably be a good idea to fuel every 45 mins or so, even if it's small. And to definitely carry water if you won't be stopping at aid stations!
Don´t worry too much about hydration or fuel. If you eat and drink enough leading up to the race you should be able to just run and not have anything. I often run a Half before breakfast and I am able to just run and not have anything. Your body is able to store fuel for about 90mins and the last 30 mins u just have to pull through
why my legs become heavy and tired after 3 km run ..and my not moving forward ..i try my best to move my legs forward but i cant ...plz help ..plzzz hepl ... I shall be greatfull for u for this I want to complete 5km .....
I'm running my first half in 4 days. I did my long runs at 6 min/km (9.40 min/miles) which didn't feel too hard. A 10k I did last year was at 5 min/km (8.03 min/miles), other 10k/12k races were a bit slower around 5.20 min/km (8.35 min/miles). Could I shoot for a sub 2? So 5.43 min/km (9.10 min/miles)? Found this video a little late and only incorporated 15 min of race pace in my last "long" run. I did track workouts and shorter tempo runs. I don't want blow up at the start going out too fast, but I also don't want to finish without having run my best. Any tips would be appreciated!!
I just ran my 6th half on Sunday , I am perplexed , I never felt stronger but totally missed my expectations. And I am not one to ever inflate those expectations. Any explanation ?
Could've been several different factors there. Was it hotter weather than you're used to? Did you get enough sleep? Drink enough water/fuel right in the days leading up? All these thing can make or break your race day.
I felt just fine , that's what I mean , I could have run even more but I was slow. I guess since I was slow that's why I had more in the tank at the end. I recently switched to Hoka shoes , what are your thoughts on them? They feel really good.
My first ever half marathon was last week, I finished in 2:08:30 so I need to take those 8min out of my way... The course was hilly and the last 3k were uphill. I started slow with a pace of 6:40min/km and at 18km I was running at 5:05min/km. Those last 3K just ruined my pace a little bit. I was very happy in the end though. :)
Quick question, how much time should the average person running 4 times a week take to run a sub 2h HM time when starting off with a HM time of 2:19? Will vary from person to person but looking for a rough timeline if possible! Thanks! 🏃♀️
I run a half under 1:45 and I could do it a lot faster if I didn't have piriformis..reallly sucks cause I can't really speed at no point during the run
Only 30 minutes of race pace as a peak??? That sounds way too little. Also, you think 5minute k’s is a tempo pace for a person targetting a sub-2hr half marathon? Way off, way too fast as a tempo pace. 5 minute pace is 5k race pace, that’s nowhere near tempo.
Dude it depends on the person potential and lifestyle. I am 28 and all my life played sports but not regularly, yet I manage to run sub one hour and 30 minutes, even last two months I ran more than 620kms in 45 days out of 60 just as a personal challenge to see my limits. So don't say others can do it because you can't, we are different!!!
Finally - an American taking the trouble to do the metric conversions - thank you!
It's great to have metric conversions but if you run a 5:43 pace as mentioned you are going to come up short as it's 5:41 thats required.
Yesss!!!!
I just did my first half this last Sunday 1:52:36. Your videos really help me

Thanks I got 1:40.09 on my first half your videos help a lot
Love hearing stories like yours! Thanks for sharing!
My best half marathon 1:57:58
My next goal get it under 1:49:59
Good points 👍🏻
Great Vid!
Thanks Jonathan! So glad to hear you enjoyed it!
2 weeks ago I ran 2hrs 1 min 55 seconds..today I'm doing it again...trying to get under 2hrs..but I'm running with some good pacing runners..will let you know how it goes..
First half-mara coming up early in June. Currently doing 3 10k's a week on around a 5.15-5.20 pace per Km. (In addition to Kickboxing and Taekwondo)
Wonderful! Good luck :)
Only just found this one week out from my first half marathon! I'm 15 and have little experience running, so at the moment I'm just aiming to finish (hopefully under 2:30:00). But if/when I do another half marothon this'll be the first video I visit!
Awesome! Glad you found us.
Yay! I finished in 2:09:45!! Now to cut off that 10 minutes!
I ran a 2 hr 8 min half 2 weeks ago. I signed up for another half this saturday (4/23/2022). Hmm. Hopefully it's not as elusive.
Thanks for the video, great content as always. Quick question: if your race pace is 9:00 per mile, what's your recommended pace to start out at and for about how long?
Pretty sure you have to maintain that pace for the whole race to obtain a sub 2 hour
Good thinking!
Great
When I was 17 ran 1hr 16min it means increasing your miles, ok you need to run at least 60ks a wk.
Hayden Wittig that’s good advice. Thank you
Hayden Wittig thank you good shit
Great info for My running. Crushing on holly😍😍😍😍
My first was in March. I did 2:10. If I was lighter and ate better I think I would do it.
How do I download the Half Marathon Training Guide please?
I did my first half marathon without watching this in 2hrs and 22 seconds last weekend, but please get me to run 1:20 sub half any suggestions
how many times a week do u do strength training? Is strength training at the gym absolutely necessary for runners? If yes what kind of workouts will help achieve a sub 2 hour half marathon ?
Istarted running 2 months ago and I did Sub 2hr half marathon last week
VIDEO IDEA: Hi, Im a proud subscriber of you guys, a sub 36min 10,000m PR and I'm also currently struggling with something called "Osgood schlatter disease" and I was wonder if maybe you could make a video about this problem, and how to achieve the fastest possible recovery? Thanks!
Proud subscriber,
Josh.
Noted! Thank you for sharing!
We also have an injury consultation option if you're interested: therunexperience.com/injuryconsultation
Step 1: don't be totally out of shape. Step 2: Run it. I've done 22km in 2:10 after a work day, on an empty stomach, through wind and rain. I'm not super fit, just average. Ok, Me knees didn't work for two days, but it still was a worthy experience for a first try.
The most ive ran is 10k today im just gonna yeet a half marathon
How did it go
1:30 gonna hit 1:27 next hopefully
Just ran my first half and got 5:55/ km or 2:09 min after only running for about 3 weeks although im an avid hiker and always have been in decent shape. Focusing on breathing is my main help
That's a great time, congrats!
I’m at 2.13 :( so close to sub 2 hour got 5 months to achieve it so fingers crossed
I got a sub 2 hour half by about 4 seconds. Haha. I'm hoping to get a better time next month!
Just finishes my first half marathon tbh with not allot of specific training in 2 hours and 28 eight seconds with 247 meters of elvetion gain feeling annoyed with the time tho but sitting here (in pain) wondering if this counts as allot of elvetion gain (for a half marathon)
doing my first half marathon this sunday...setting a goal of under 1:30 for myself 😁
PDF file link not working
Hi - I have pace around 10:30 min/miles. I want to run sub 2 hr half marathon on 23rd September 2018. Its only one week from today. How I can do that ?
I know this video is kind of old but the first link in the description doesnt work.
Thanks for letting us know!
Helpful. Just did a 15k and next goal is Half. Question: intra-race hydration, energy gel....do most runners need it for the half or just you just worry about it pre-race? I usually avoid h20 stations and never have carried energy gels.....
Rick Martin I have just started taking gels on my long runs, usually 8 or 9 miles in then another one at 11 or 12, I really think they are a good idea
Rick Martin I've used energy gels or energy gummies after 10k, mostly at Mile 7, and then 9
Good question!
Your body is able to store fuel for about 90mins and the last 30 mins u just have to pull through
Last half was 2:01 i had no idea how close i was dang it !!! Ok 👌🏻 thanks
why my legs become heavy and tired after 3 km run ..and my not moving forward ..i try my best to move my legs forward but i cant ...plz help ..plzzz hepl ... I shall be greatfull for u for this I want to complete 5km .....
did my first half today 3:10 it killed me as I did no training, shall I do a few 10ks before my next one?
Probably a good call :)
Update: I did it! 1.57.09 officially on my first ever half marathon.
Can you do a video on how to get a sub 2 hour marathon next?
Absolutely 👍- how about ride a bike?
👍👍👍
Can anyone buzz in on how to get a sub 2 after coming off a marathon? I'm trying to recover but still keep my fitness up. Thanks.
Link to the training guide isn’t working
Thanks for letting us know! The link has been fixed 👍

Sounds like you crushed it!
Oh I meant half marathon. So sorry, otherwise I'd be world record material. Lol (I edited the original post)
I tried, but the 2hour pacers got me at 18k - got psyched out for 2k. Leading to 2:02:05
You're really close to that sub-2 goal time, don't give up!
how long would tempo runs be for if extended these tips for a marathon?
You can increase the length of the workout (more rounds), without messing with the pace demands too much.
I managed it in 57:21.
Now I just need to work out how to do the last 9 miles in 2:38
I don’t get it can’t everyone run a sub 2? I’ve never ran more than a 1.40hr
purpi...classic
Quick question, how much time should the average person running 4 times a week take to run a sub 2h HM time when starting off with a HM time of 2:19? Will vary from person to person but looking for a rough timeline if possible! Thanks! 🏃♀️
You can probably tackle this change in 6 months with good, consistent training!
The Run Experience
Thanks! That's really encouraging!
would like the half marathon training plan. please let me know how to get it
My time is 1:34:43 to run a half marathon
I run a half under 1:45 and I could do it a lot faster if I didn't have piriformis..reallly sucks cause I can't really speed at no point during the run
Did one today without one day of training lol finished in 2:02
Only 30 minutes of race pace as a peak??? That sounds way too little. Also, you think 5minute k’s is a tempo pace for a person targetting a sub-2hr half marathon? Way off, way too fast as a tempo pace. 5 minute pace is 5k race pace, that’s nowhere near tempo.
Anyone that can run a 10km at 5min/km pace doesn’t need to watch this video. Move along and get out there. You’re ready.
Why am I watching this I can run sub 2 hour marathon easily and I only run to get in shape
i ran 1:32:32 with 2 weeks of training and i´m 16... just be a little hard to yourself
E.I.L. I thought it was 16?
sure thing dude
Dude it depends on the person potential and lifestyle. I am 28 and all my life played sports but not regularly, yet I manage to run sub one hour and 30 minutes, even last two months I ran more than 620kms in 45 days out of 60 just as a personal challenge to see my limits. So don't say others can do it because you can't, we are different!!!
