The Korean War: A Civilian's Recollection | 平民視角的抗美援朝戰爭：我姑姑的回憶

- In the so-called "Free World," the Korean War is commonly referred to as the "Forgotten War." However, in China and Korea, this war altered the destinies of countless families, and reshaped the history of the entire Asia-Pacific region. My family is one of the countless families profoundly impacted by this war.
In the first half of the 20th century, my grandfather and great uncle migrated to northeastern China in search of work after completing their carpentry apprenticeships. While in the northeast, they discovered that there were better job opportunities across the river in Japanese-occupied Korea, and soon moved south to Huichon, Korea. In 1943, my grandfather protected fellow Chinese worker from harassment by Japanese-backed Korean criminals, which led to his persecution. In order to protect his own safety, he fled to Seoul. In 1945, Korea was liberated, but due to the partitioning of the country, my grandfather and great uncle never had the chance to reunite.
My aunt (cousin), Zhong Chunxia, was born in 1943 in Huichon, Korea. In 1950, when the Korean War broke out, she and her family narrowly escaped death and, with the help of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, embarked on a difficult journey back to China, eventually settling in Shenyang. After years of investigation and efforts, we finally reconnected with our relatives in Shenyang in 2000.
I am honored to have my aunt join me for an interview to share some lesser-known stories about the Korean War from the perspective of an ordinary citizen.

在所謂的「自由世界」，朝鮮戰爭普遍被稱為「被遺忘的戰爭」。但在中國和南北朝鮮，無論從何角度或立場看，這場戰爭改變了無數家庭的命運，也改寫了整個亞太地區的歷史。我的家族就是其中一個被這場戰爭深深影響的家庭。
在 20 世紀上葉，我的爺爺和伯公在完成木匠手藝學徒後，加入了闖關東的行列，由山東前往我國東北謀生。在東北闖蕩期間，他們無意中發現日佔朝鮮那邊有更好的工作機會，於是很快南下到了朝鮮熙川。1943 年，爺爺因敢於保護一名受壓迫的華僑而抵抗朝鮮的通日惡勢力，遭到迫害，為保全性命，他逃往華人較多的首爾。1945 年，朝鮮半島光復，但因南北分裂，我爺爺和伯公一生再未能重逢。
我的堂姑鍾春霞，1943 年出生於朝鮮熙川。1950 年朝鮮戰爭爆發後，堂姑一家四口在戰火中死裡逃生，並在中國人民志願軍的幫助下踏上了回國的艱難征途，最終定居在瀋陽。經過多年的努力和調查，2000 年我們終於與瀋陽的親戚取得了聯繫。
我非常榮幸能邀請到我的姑姑接受採訪，從平民百姓的視角分享一些有關朝鮮戰爭的鮮為人知的故事。

Thank you so much for sharing my aunt's story. I hope the lesson to your students isn't to feel guilt for foreign policy out of their control, but to see how media narratives are often shaped by the omission of differing viewpoints. The Korean War was ultimately an extension of antagonisms that had already existed in Korea, with foreign powers eager to exploit and perhaps even exacerbate them for their geopolitical purposes.
Such a feisty woman, your aunt. Speaking with great clarity and conviction, wearing her party pin with pride: “The crimes of US imperialism are eternally condemned by the people” ✅ The closing words are especially touching
the literal translation is even better, but I translated it the way I did for brevity reasons: "the crimes of US imperialism have forever been nailed by the people onto the pillar of shame"

XY, you aunt's experiences and sufferings during the war years are indeed moving and touching. I can't imagine her mother's tribulations with bound feet having to carry the younger son while on the run over all sorts of difficult terrain. Indeed their experiences examplify the plights and sufferings of the Palestinians today who are still undergoing endless days of strafings and bombings. You aunt is absolutely right about war causing unnecessary sufferings to civilians. Indeed, it is increasing clear that if there is any country that is gaslighting other countries into going to war, it is the US, first and foremost!
It's a pity. I don't speak putonghua, only Hokkien. Please have English captions is possible.

Are there any documentaries and other information on the Korean war from the Chinese side? I know there are blockbusters from China but those seem more heavily on the propaganda side. Thanks for the great video and your Aunt is super brave!
This can be one of them. The rest is western propaganda in popularity. The Chinese side is very much an untold story to the rest of the world so I'm not sure what you want to hear.
I can't think of many off the top of my head, since most of them are in Chinese, but there is one called "They Chose China" that documents US POWs who after the war decided to live in China instead of return to the US

我爺爺是山東人沒錯，父親是韓國華僑，由於韓國政府當年還沒跟北京建交，而且不承認外國人的孩子是他們的公民，於是像我爸的韓國華僑都一律成為所謂「中華民國」的國民，也可以說他們在陰錯陽差之下成為了偽台灣人。我媽才是台灣人，她是第七代的本省人，祖先來自福建漳州

I want to know the influence of China (both KMT and CCP) on Korea from 1945 to 1950
I think Kim Il Sung is just as bad as Syngman Rhee. Both were total disasters.
Kim Il Sung enjoyed popular support throughout the entirety of his leadership. Even with US backing, Syngman Rhee was forced to resign by the Korean people of the south due to his widespread unpopularity.
