Yeah I never thought to or understood how to approach it with any kind of strategy when I was a kid. As long as you follow this strategy you can definitely make it to Oregon.
It was always a bit surreal playing this as a kid, as not only did I live IN Oregon but not that far from the Willamette Valley that is the game’s finish line. Finish game, look up, “Yep. That’s Oregon.”
did not think this game was hard for people, i played it back in elementary with the class, and never touched it since, found the free online version and played through making it to Oregon my first try with poor health and no losses, complete wagon (-1 ox +2 each spare) and a bit over 250 in cash playing the carpenter. looked up how to beat top score and now seems that its almost too difficult to beat, Stephen Meek the true boss of the souls series. will try again another day (:
to beat Stephen Meek: 1. go as a farmer 2. leave in March/April 3. get 2-3 oxen yokes, 700 food, 10 clothing sets, 5 box of ammo, 1 of each wagon part. 4. go in the game, keep steady pace, meager/filling food. 5. try to keep hp above poor 6. if someone gets sick or breaks arm and leg, rest for 5 days on good/fair/poor health 7. if anything bad happens you get unlucky wagon fire or just a single person dies, restart the game and repeat steps 1-6 8. do not drown rivers 9. you will go down to fair and poor health and slow down after fort Laramie. just keep going. 10. You will run out of food very quickly. Hunt every minute or so. You need to constantly hunt for animals, get either two deer, one bear, or one buffalo/bison each time you hunt. 11. If you get lucky and nothing bad happens, take the Barlow Toll Road if possible. 12. right before the end put food rations to filling, pace at steady, start hunting like crazy until you have 1980-2000 food. Your health should switch to good. Keep it at good. Then continue into Willamette valley. Get 7500 points for people, 150 points for a wagon, and few hundred for food, and other supplies left over. You should now have 7800+ points and beat them.
It’s pretty easy to beat Stephen Meek if you do everything in this video except start in March and alternate between strenuous/steady and meager/filling rations as necessary and take rests so that the health rating never drops below fair so no one dies especially when people get sick or injured, and finally when you get to the Dallas simply keep taking rests until the health rating hits good before going down the river mini-game. Having a good health rating makes every survivor worth 2500 when playing as farmer.

I was able to play this without casualties even though I was delayed by winter weather even though I left early. I usually caulk the wagon for deeper rivers and move at a strenuous pace with meager rations.
Love the video. I'm from Nebraska and we pronounce Kearney as Car Knee. I know it's weird like how people living in Toronto don't pronounce the second t. Keep up the good videos bro.
Yeah I knew there were at least one or two of these pronunciations I was going to goof. Car Knee sounds right when you type it out now that I think about it. And thank you!
During the introduction of Museum Madness on the computer game by MECC back in 1994, is this the City of White Plains, New York during intro in Museum Madness on the computer game by MECC back in 1994?
Incredible VG101! Idea, Pirates! NES with "King's Advisor" ending. I'm sure you're more than capable of hardest difficulty, but any difficulty is OK cuz IIRC it's about the same except for the sailing and it would be too long with the cloud dodging.
I'm not able to unsubscribe since RUclips tells me I am now deceased. I'm not sure if this is a glitch in their system or not, so I will continue to attend future classes as a ghost. Can I at least get a discount on enrollment?
April/May both work pretty well. Even with all the resting to keep everyone relatively healthy and wildcards, you can get there without issue with a May start.
I was just thinking you know what would have made this a better video was to include a highlight section at the beginning where you quickly go over buying, hunting, pace setting, rive strat, and overall strategy in a quick 30 second to 1 minute intro and then "set off". That way you can repurpose that section of the video into a reel/tiktok to get an audnece to your chanel and then some will convert into full length watching audience and then a portion will subscribe off that. Easy growth hack.
Ha fair question, but the little details we cover with regards to the water levels, supplies, keeping people alive, it definitely helps if you don't have a lot of experience with this one.

Fun Fact: The Green River gets it's name because of green tint caused by sediments suspended in the river's water. Well done, Tony and TAs as always.
Excellent fact, thank you Matthew!
Omg omg you did it!!!!!!This game has been the bane of my existence when I was growing up.

Ha nice, that's cool.
I got the notification for this a week ago and I’m FINALLY watching it. Been super busy. Better late than never. This Oregon boy loves this video!!!!!
Haha thanks Brando.

Stephen meek is my arch nemesis, I've been trying to beat him for years
Ha understandable. Yours and mine both!

I remember being blown away finally seeing the river crossing.
It's a great feeling when you make it there.

Excellent supplementary info on taking down the great Mr. Meek, especially ensuring you end with everyone in top shape.
Prof, have you tried the new Switch version of Oregon Trail?
I have not, didn't know it existed but that's awesome they're keeping this game/series alive so I'll have to check it out if I get a chance.
I was able to play this without casualties even though I was delayed by winter weather even though I left early. I usually caulk the wagon for deeper rivers and move at a strenuous pace with meager rations.
Strenuous + meager, that's ballsy, I like it.

Any chance you could do Operation: Frog in a future episode?
What is the song for Soda Springs? I never figured that out.
It's a Scottish folk song called "Charlie Is My Darling". This version is a bit more uptempo I think than it's normally played.
The thing I like to brag about is that my dad beat this pre- Internet
Ha nice.
Where do you go to play these classic games just asking for a friend that's all
I think this one's offered as a browser game somewhere if you just search for it. Plain and simple!

I died, so I subscribed!
Ha best comment.
Used to play this Odell lake and word and number munchers
Yep, all games the computer class systems were stocked with!

Excellent suggestion; I love that game, as well.
I enjoyed this
Thank you!
i found when you hunt after the ox wonders off if you back out of the hunt the ox has already returned as opposed to having wait for a bit.
Excellent tip, thank you!
@@VideoGames101 it also lessens the time someone is sick.

We're no longer offering the ghost discount I'm sorry to say.
May is way too late to leave .

11:51 Maybe you should have everyone who attends class sign some kind of liability waiver just incase .... nevermind 😀
At least it wasn't dysentery (cough, Fluff, cough).
3:28 Why is that child knife-fighting with that dog?
The trail is rough!
The fluff thing is so weird haha but cool vid
We love him, thank you LR!
I may have died but i still love your playthroughs
Haha need to get that quote on a t-shirt.
@@VideoGames101 that would be cool
i had a thief steal 5 of my 6 oxens like how do you even do that
Ha wow. It's just about the thrill at that point.
You would have beat Meek if Class had lived
Ha I know, so close!

Excellent tip, Nubya, I appreciate it and will keep it in mind!
Lol Katy Perry is a dated reference!?! What about Oregon Trail?
Well relative to her heyday I suppose, haha but true, we DEAL in dated references here!
I remember playing this one on an Apple 2E computer back in 5th grade. Better watch out for those pestilences and epidemics or you'll lose your crew.
Yep me too! And yes there's a fair amount of luck involved, as well.
Does this game really need a walk through?
Ha fair question, but the little details we cover with regards to the water levels, supplies, keeping people alive, it definitely helps if you don't have a lot of experience with this one.
who would of thought there was a walkthrough for this game
Ha fair but I've got you covered all the way to Oregon!
You really should have done the Organ Trail.
I do enjoy that one. Or for a more hands on experience, Death Road to Canada is excellent.
I'm all about the dysentery
Only professor to willingly kill his class and ask us to subscribe jejejejeje
Ha I don't know if it was WILLINGLY, there was probably .5 seconds between disease and death. But yep, just how we do things on this channel.
I've got no class while being in class
Gary be hunting the ladies
Ha thankfully it didn't come to that (as far as you know, we did jump ahead during the hunting portions).
Did I die?! Yo I'm definitely not subbing now lol.
I scored 8037!
You took down the Meek!
Bro im playing this for a history final who is fluff and whats going on💀💀
Ha hopefully Fluff's facts about the game will help you ace it!
@@VideoGames101 so i ended up giving up because somebody got 16k😭
Good thing you didn't run into hostile indians and had to shoot them. There is no cannibalism in your group.
Yep pretty clean run with the tips and a bit of luck; you never know what you'll get on the trail.
Yikes, 😬
