It is quite likely based on the length of prior eruptions that the ongoing activity at Home Reef in Tonga will end by the end of next week. Of course, us scientists might be surprised by a possible longer island forming eruption than is typical.
Our of curiosity if most islands get washed away due to being loosely conglomerated ash do we have an understanding of how more long lived volcanic islands are formed? I know Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai prior to its caldera forming eruption had managed to avoid washing away thanks to chemical erosion transforming the lose ash deposits into more durable rock but that at least had a preexisting remnant islands to anchor that ash in place long enough for that process to occur. In the absence of such anchoring against currents how does a new volcanic island establish itself? Is it a matter of sustained eruption rates overtaking the losses enough to start building terrestrial volcanic rock that isn't lose ash?.
I would just like to add that Gamalama comprises pretty much all of the island called Ternate. I have wanted to visit there for over 25 years, as the history is long and complex. It was a main source of the Clove spice. It was controlled by tribal rulers, visited by Chinese & Arab traders, became an Arabic Sultanate, became rich on the spice trade, the Portuguese tried to take over the spice trade, was visited by Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish turned up also chasing the spice trade, then the Dutch took over until WWII. There is still a Sultan, but purely as a figurehead, as the administration is the Indonesian government. Sorry to be so off-topic, but it is a fascinating place, and Gamalama is a very important aspect of the island.
Any thought about the unusually sudden and relatively large (Richter) swarm in the vicinity of Luoshan Mud Volcano in Taiwan? 2 of which were 6.5 and 6.9 respectively and generated Tsunami warnings?
FYI, the English translation for that volcano in Costa Rica is the "old lady's corner" or I've also heard the "witches corner". Basically a nook in the corner where an old lady would sit in a house. At least, that was what I was told, by a Costa Rican, when I lived in Costa Rica.
1808 Coincidentally that's the name of a bill in that passed on the house floor of the us congress that essentially bans almost every gun, it spits on and then rips down the American constitution.
Is there any particular reason why the VEI chart starts at 0 on the top and 8 at the bottom? Wouldn't it be more intuitive to put the higher numbers at the top? Or do geologists usually put the important information in footnotes?😁
If one of these volcanoes causes a tsunami that goes all the way to California, I will try to film it from the same spot I filmed the last Tonga-generated tsunami, if the spot isn't underwater.

That mud volcano is not related to any true volcano, luckily.
