There are many types of receptors within your body, my favourite is the GPCR (G-protein coupled receptors). These are the main targets for drugs and drug discovery. It's been found that some of these receptors "bind" to eachother and can give a varied response than the original one on its own. There are a few variations of the opioid receptor such as MOR (the target for morphine) and DOR (a receptor that is responsible for desensitisation/tolerance) these are regularly found "bound" to each other which means as the morphine targeted receptor is activated the tolerance one is activated too giving a double desensitisation effect from both receptors.
They discovered that these receptors bind to eachother through bioluminescence and fluorescence by modified proteins and naturally occurring proteins. They tag the receptors separately and "put" them on another cell. These receptors that are tagged can only produce the desired wavelength of light if the two fluorescence and bioluminescence molecules are close together (under 100 angstroms). So the bioluminescence "donates" light to the fluorescence and the desired wavelength is produced that's observed suggesting that the receptors bind to eachother and therefore we understand a little bit more of how we work.
