    Advertising has long fueled media. In exchange for viewing a commercial or navigating around a pop-up ad, you’re able to read news articles and watch videos without paying money.
    But what if advertisers were removed from the process altogether? That’s the basic idea behind Substack, a platform where readers fund writers and podcasters directly. The company sees its approach as a potential game-changer for media business models.
    While advertising has played a pivotal role in monetizing media companies, the creators of Substack argue that it pressures companies to churn out content whose primary goal is to get eyeballs on ads, often at the expense of ensuring that the content is accurate and newsworthy.
    Check out this episode of Challengers to see how Substack got started and where it might be heading in the future.

    Kudos to Substack for their free speech first approach. The answer is simple if you disagree with a writer, write something which proves that other writer is wrong.

    This model seems fair to me - as a consumer you get to choose what you give and what you get in return because the trading hall itself is neutral. And same as a seller - you offer something, and if someone is interested, they pay for it, and with money - not likes, or shares, or things that you can't use financially directly. It's a fair trade.

    I love substack! You can see all different points of view or not, it's your choice. Not at all like a newspaper or the nightly news, where it's their way or the highway, believe what we tell you or else! Only thing on the news worth watching is the weather.

    I am absolutely loving Substack. I really hope they keep their vision and the creators that are apart of it right now keep growing. I have mainly subscribed to tech/engineering newsletters and the amount I’ve learned on there has been amazing. It's also fascinating to see such polarized opinions on topics and critiques of others' writing. All of this unfolds in an unfiltered manner, without fear of social penalties.

    Substack's point of difference is freedom of speech & hosting a multitude of viewpoints. Many people are craving genuine discourse & want articles that explore topics in depth. There's also a huge appetite for writing that offer unexpected viewpoints & writers who are unafraid of exploring topics from a pro-human moral, & values based viewpoint. .

    I fully buy into what Substack is trying to do, so much so, that I signed up. At this point I realised that even though I buy into the idea, Substack does NOT buy into me or any other African voice, their payment partner offers service to NOT ONE/ ZERO African countries, thus negating all African voices from the platform and the opportunity it represents. That said, I still believe in what Substack is doing, just from the other side of the locked door, excluded.

    • @N3VLYNNN
      @N3VLYNNN 6 месяцев назад

      There is a way around that. I suggest that you sign up for an international bank account that supports multiple currencies, such as Wise. Substack's payment partner, Stripe, will pay directly into your Wise account in USD, Euro, or GBP, and you can convert your money into your local African currency at market rate, and use it with a bank card or deposit it into another local bank account.
      I used Wise when I lived in Nigeria whilst getting paid in USD, and it was a lifesaver.
      There can be restrictions with what you can do with certain foreign currencies, but they support most major African currencies. Worst case scenario, you can get a bank account in your African country that allows you to receive and withdraw USD. You just need to get creative.
      Just thought I'd share-I support my fellow Africans in using this platform and I want us to share our voices. 😊

    TLDR: Substack offers a new model for writers to directly monetize their work, providing an alternative to the attention-driven media industry.
    00:00 💡 Media industry is focused on grabbing attention and selling it through ads, but there is a push for different approaches.
    00:57 💡 Substack offers a new model where readers pay writers directly, but its impact is controversial.
    01:32 📚 Jane Jacobs' "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" discusses what makes a great city and how it can be hindered, while the early internet was a land grab for attention.
    02:03 📰 Substack was created as a response to the perverse consequences of the media landscape, with the idea originating from the speaker and not his colleague.
    02:43 💡 Substack offers a different business model for creators to publish and charge for their work, taking a 10% cut.
    03:22 💡 Substack makes it easier for anyone to start a media business and many are making money from newsletters, podcasts, and blogs.
    04:09 📈 Substack faces competition and controversy, but many writers have found success on the platform.
    05:09 📰 Substack prioritizes free speech and minimal intervention, standing its ground against other platforms and aiming to contribute to the media industry and provide hope for writers.

    5:21 and herein lies the problem: if every idiot can write an article, it's not intellectual.

    • @thesapienasset
      @thesapienasset 11 месяцев назад

      Not every article is meant to be intellectual. I don’t just want to read about things that stimulate my intellect. I also want to read things that stimulate my emotions and beliefs and culture. And most people do too. Maybe we’re all idiots for wanting to read an article written by an idiot.
      The problem lies in people like you, labeling an entire segment of the population as “idiots”, who then falsely thinking intellectuals are all elitist pricks like you, lose respect for actually intellectual information and education, thereby continuing the cycle of ignorance and illiteracy.

      @@tomveil14 Why is fascism on the rise again in Europe? Why do so many people follow Trump? Because they all have the cure, the solution to all the problems? Not really. They know how to talk, plain and simple. That's it. Anyone can be a good storyteller and still massively fail at investigation and stating facts. Those who follow some basic principles of ethics would not write sensational pieces and try to make the facts speak for themselves. However, nobody cares about these boring texts.
      You can only have journalistic quality, when one can use the words and be curious in nature to learn and understand the facts of their topic of interest. If only attention counts, then the latter is not necessary, and you seem to appreciate the former only.
