every time people are like, "old music is so much better"...I think of this. This shit is classic and if anyone is smart this music will last a very long time.
The thing is, GB is so awesome because they are so unique and truly original. That's also what's great about "old music". There's are actually many artists that are doing original things with original approaches, but the current format of commercial radio won't let the good stuff through. The reason you and I can rejoice in knowing GB, was the result of a proactive fan base and I guess a small miracle. The point, "old music" is still great. So are all the innovative new artists we'll never hear of.
This is such a complicated song and the ways that they change it (with more prevalent harmonies and with alternative instrumental parts) is unbelievably professional
This band is one of the most unique of our generation. This is a band we will be remembered for right here. Along with Arcade Fire. First two bands, imo, that I really think have done something completely different and have allowed rock music to stay fresh and not recycled.
well you have to be well known to be remembered unfortunately. I guess some bands from this era could pull a velvet underground and be more famous later on.
Just recently went through this band's entire discography, and I loved every song. This band is awesome but I wanted to see how well they could translate their sound live...and holy shit this gave me goosebumps. This is even better than the studio version, this made my day. No actually, this made my week.
Seriously, Chris Bear is one of the most underrated drummers in this particular vein of music. So subtle, yet incredibly complex, with all of his grooves. Love it!
People discussing if the violinist messed up after all this time... there are these things called triplets and offbeats lmao... I play violin myself and that performance was so on point I can't even...Also the violins are not actually the ones who end the song, it's the cello who still plays the last beat and I hadn't noticed! After 7 years of watching this! I love Grizzly Bear soooo muuuuch 💙💙💙
I just imagine many people watching this when it aired, probably never have listened to Grizzly Bear before and (hopefully) having their mind blown by this because wow
I honestly thought the violin picking at the end was perfect! Just because the violin ended on the off beat, before the bass and drums played the final note, doesn't mean he messed up or ruined it. It was intended to be that way, and it just means this band is far beyond following the basic rules of song endings and beginnings...one of the many things that makes Grizzly Bear one of the great and true originals of our generation.
Gorgeous vocals, crazy amazing song...I close my eyes when I listen to this song and every single time, it takes me away on a journey to another dimension.
just seen these guys live in Columbus for the second time. Every time I hear them, they just give me chills. Such an amazing, unique sound and talent these guys have. Music that gets in your bones.
This song is the best thing I've heard in MY LIFE. gosh darn everytime I hear this song I just have to stop whatever I'm doing and I DIE. I die out of the sheer intensity.
The album version is very beautiful and languid, but this has so much power to it that it's just unspeakably brilliant. Thank goodness they're coming to New Zealand soon!
i've seen them live--hands down, best show i have ever been to (and i have been to A LOT of shows). the experience was almost religious. heavenly, some might say
seen this band live in edinburgh a couple of months ago. a friend took me. i had'nt heard much of ther songs, but i really enjoyed it. very atmospherical.
Every video that I watch having to do with Grizzly Bear is amazing. They record great albums and their live performances compete with the album versions and that is something seldom seen. Whoever says they are the Beatles of the 20th Century is definitely correct. This and Two Weeks are just astounding.
Letterman was so awkward at the end of the performance - not shaking Chris Taylor's hand, then calling the string quartet "ladies' with a guy in there. But that doesn't take away from the performance. This was awesome.

now this is that old music and it is so much better than whatever we have today
10 years later, it doesn't even seem old to me
This is such a complicated song and the ways that they change it (with more prevalent harmonies and with alternative instrumental parts) is unbelievably professional
this song fucks me up in the best way
+carl jaysen It is ecstacy in the shape of sound
Same! What is life without this song??? Or this band??
I keep coming back to this transcendent performance, year after year.
Same feeling here, never fails to amaze
Same here. Still after 13 years.
this song is timeless.
That violin player was killin it
Do you mean that in a good or a bad way?
DarkSaint411 good
Letterman had the best taste in music. Still love repeat watching the time he got so stoked hosting Future Islands.
His voice is magical

First two well known bands.
well you have to be well known to be remembered unfortunately. I guess some bands from this era could pull a velvet underground and be more famous later on.
Radiohead too
One of the more beautiful four minutes and nineteen seconds of my life.
Brett Plank Yeah man, that dude talking at the beginning will definetly be one for the years.
Just recently went through this band's entire discography, and I loved every song. "they go we go, i want you to know, what i did i did." that part sends chills up my spine every time....
So simple yet beautiful
Seriously, Chris Bear is one of the most underrated drummers in this particular vein of music. So subtle, yet incredibly complex, with all of his grooves. Love it!
This song is a masterpiece.
The sound quality of this performance is just amazing. The sound guy did a great fuckin' job, indeed!
this song makes me want to cry
As a DJ, it is an absolute honor everytime I get to play music by Grizzly Bear. I really hope they put out a live album one day too
This is such a special song and congratulations to that one violin guy he made this performance bloody magical. 🤘
life is dangerously fast
thank god im listening to the right music
14 years later... You not lying.
People discussing if the violinist messed up after all this time... there are these things called triplets and offbeats lmao... drviz they are non musical dumbasses this was perfection!!😑
I just imagine many people watching this when it aired, probably never have listened to Grizzly Bear before and (hopefully) having their mind blown by this because wow
That was IMMACULATE. One of the most beautiful performances on Letterman.
Definitely one of the few bands I will always come back to. veckatimest and shield (plus the b sides) are absolute gold imo.
incredible voice
His voice... Jesusssss. It is insanely beautiful!
This song and his voice sends chills through my soul.
This is an amazing performance of an amazing song!
I actually cant get over how perfect this performance is. 100 times better than the record.
This song is extasy! Amazing performance
This song, no matter how many times I listen to it, gives me the chills every time.
saying that i love this band would be an understatement.
This performance is nothing short of phenomenal. Gah, Ed Droste has such an amazing voice. Can't wait to see them again!
The violin solo at the end is soooo amazing... I replayed it about 5 times when I first heard it
I really think Letterman really enjoyed this performance. And that makes me even happier.
He clearly did not make a mistake at the end. He played it exactly how it was intended to be played. Come on people.
Gorgeous vocals, crazy amazing song...I close my eyes when I listen to this song and every single time, it takes me away on a journey to another dimension.

This song is the best thing I've heard in MY LIFE. gosh darn everytime I hear this song I just have to stop whatever I'm doing and I DIE. I die out of the sheer intensity.
One of the best albums to come out in years. They deserve every scrap of recognition they get, and more.
Fuck, this is so damn good. damn it....
The audience was shook after this performance
The album version is very beautiful and languid, but this has so much power to it that it's just unspeakably brilliant. Thank goodness they're coming to New Zealand soon!
When I listened to the album for the first time, this was my favorite song immediately. Incredible performance of an incredible song.
I started tearing up at about 3:20. One of the most beautiful performances ever.
That was intense
I have always enjoyed this performance. Especially the strings. Awesome.
wow what a haunting performance...this song sends chills up my spine. incredible.
I could listen to this song on repeat, all day, all night. Along with Service Bell with Feist.
Shivers... truly
I'm spoiled on this version....when the song comes up on spotify I open up this version right away
Amazing performance!
i've seen them live--hands down, best show i have ever been to (and i have been to A LOT of shows). the experience was almost religious. heavenly, some might say

I just listened to Grizzly Bear for the first time, and I'm already in love with them.
this has to be in the top 5 best songs/performances of the past 100 years.
the violion harmonies at 3:23...wow. Marvelous.

Pure auditory perfection! Just had an eargasm....

One of the best, if not the best live performance I've seen on Letterman. These guys are going far.
I'm seeing these guys on September 26th at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor...CAN'T WAIT!!
I overlooked this performance. Coming back to it, I can safely say this is one of the top 10 performances on Letterman of all time.... easily.

It's so unorthodox, so beautiful

Every video that I watch having to do with Grizzly Bear is amazing. They record great albums and their live performances compete with the album versions and that is something seldom seen. Whoever says they are the Beatles of the 20th Century is definitely correct. This and Two Weeks are just astounding.

Amazing that they can sound so fantastic live.
talk about an underrated band. this is music right here.
one of the best live performances i've seen on letterman...right up there with "afraid of everyone" by the national.
Wow, found it tonight and love it.
Letterman was so awkward at the end of the performance - not shaking Chris Taylor's hand, then calling the string quartet "ladies' with a guy in there.
But that doesn't take away from the performance. This was awesome.
Realy good!, incomparable sound.
Just beautiful. My favourite song off the album as well
i'm so in love with this song. this band is amazing
Wow, they owned that performance, perfection!
