Thanks, The good news is that I see more and more younger smiths taking up the craft, many running successful business and setting up well equipped shops. Same thing seems true over on the woodworking side.

You are the Bob Ross of blacksmithing. I watch you hammer and file and grind and during the whole process the work looks like a mess, then all of a sudden it's perfect. I don't know how you do it but it's fantastic. Now I'm wondering what you'd look like with a 2 foot perm saying things like "Right here we'll put a happy little tapered hook". Anyway, Thanks for the videos. You've helped my work tremendously.

I really preferred the LONG VERSION ! I get more detail and I am able to take in more Information ! But were Real Good Videos , but as far as learning ! Long is my Choice !

Thanks Kindly for this great and instructive video! I enjoyed every minuet, even liked the hammering. I don't think the handle is too long at all. There have been times when a long handle would have been far better than other I have, especially if your cooking something over an open fire. Like soup or stew in an iron pot or a two or three gallon kettle. Very lovely piece. I have two ladles and a strainer that was made by a long gone ancestor. Still in use and still appreciated for the fine art of blacksmithing. Many Thanks again! DaveyJO in Pa.

I think that the ball in the handle looks elegant and cool, plus I bet it would allow you to use the label in a shorter pot than you could otherwise without falling over, maybe?
As always, great work. Very inspiring. I have spent more time behind a file lately and finding that I enjoy the the hand work much more than the speed of the belt grinders and polishers. I still use the buffing wheel to make things shiny though. I don’t have a fast enough hand for that.

I watched both videos do like the longer one better as it gives me a better chance to see what is going on. Especially liked that there was no speed up
Uploading a single video of that length takes about 12 hours and pretty well ties up our internet for that time. How do you feel about the long version split into two videos on separate days?
@@BlackBearForge John, I watch about everything that you put out and many times more than once. I watched the short and then the long this time. You do what you have to do to make things work for you. I would bet that the short gets more "hits"---but what do I know?

Could you take a piece of block like u were using and cut a channel to the size you need on the handle
If anyone wants a great chuckle go to 34:18 and put close captions on. As he's filing it says [Music] :D :D
(This is a really good solution to the filing noises and not missing any discussion/description, as I can turn the volume off for the screetching and the CC will show what John is saying. It works really well for this and other videos where there is loud noise. e.g. anyone who doesnt have such an awesomely quiet anvil as John :D....and apparently makes good jokes by accident lol)
I think you should do long version videos of select projects.
It seems likely. However. This video has some of the worst audience retention ever. People just quit watching after about 20 minutes. So there needs to be some way to keep them interested when the forging gets monotonous.
Is this made out of 1018? Is 1018 sort of the basic item steel I should be using for general items like this? Do you wax these items so they don't rust? Thank you very much for your work.
It's made from A36 which is a mild steel similar to 1018. Any food safe finish that you would use on cast iron cookware would be suitable for something of this sort.
How did you get the inside of the bowl filed, sanded?
Hand sanding and even then its not as smooth as I might like.
I know the answer to my question is probably "yes", would it be worth it to forge a ladle out of a RR spike?
Sure, it would make an interesting handle
@@BlackBearForge cool. Soon as I get my forge set up I'll see if I can give that a go. I don't have a power hammer so smashing a RR spike will be sooo much fun! 😂

This is the same sized ladle as in the "short version." Total ripoff!
Yes, but didn't i do an awesome job getting them to match exactly. Right down to the last hammer mark. 😜
