The only gold coins I can afford are the ones with the chocolate centre.

I had a Japanese friend, Nobuko, who was stuck in China after WW2. Because she and her husband had a successful business, the Chinese would not let them leave the country and she wanted to go back home because the Chinese border could be closed down at any time. A banker friend turned their money into beaten gold. They hid it in her daughter’s doll and her husband’s cane. They left in the middle of the night dressed as peasants. They travelled on foot and slept in bombed out buildings, eventually meeting other refugees, with whom they travelled as a group. They tore pieces off the rolled gold to bribe guards at borders to let the group pass, or to bargain for food along the way. They were searched often, but their hidden gold was never discovered. Currency wasn’t worth much, so they used the gold to get train passage for the group in a cattle car, open to the elements, that was heading towards the coast where Americans had refugee ships bound for Occupied Japan. They slept on a crowded deck for the passage to Japan. I was 25 in Kyoto when Nobuko, who was in her 60s told me this story in a series of riveting evening conversations. I’ve never forgotten those winter evening tales. Real life stories show us that we have to be flexible and consider lots of scenarios that require a combination of wilderness and cultural skills.
If a banker ever came by looking for payment when things are going down hill, I'll give him some lead.
Without hesitation of course.
The big nose would make him an easy target.
Did this really just go racial? Foh
Everyone says that. No one would really do it though. I see wayyyyy too many “preppers” on RUclips that are alarmingly eager to pull a trigger. It’s almost like you guys are trying to red flag yourselves 😂
@@MykieDYDSS The day red flag "laws" become a problem in Texas is the day that I lost my freedom sticks in a boating accident.
I used to buy gold for dark times because history has demonstrated that gold is the best form of money in the world and it has saved lives in the worst scenarios.
Central banks around the world are buying it at a record rate. Hmmmm....what do they know?
Gold isn't a currency. It is money.
@@Hardcore-Homestead believe me I really know the difference, and thank you for the correction.
What central banks are buying it? Is that why the price is flat? Don't believe everything you hear on RUclips.
@@ChrisGilliamOffGrid Jesus Christ I can't believe how many people that follow prepping channels don't understand economics whatsoever. You're the one that listens to the shit you hear on RUclips. Go study Keynesian economics and derivatives then come back and give your opinion. Ignorant uninformed fool.
You made a good point about gold being useful when there is still somewhat of a society in place. The Modern Survivalist lived through the collapse of Argentina where conditions deteriorated slowly and incrementally, and he said precious metals were invaluable to get food, medicines, and to eventually buy his way out of the country.
I live in lebanon and the country went to the crapper in a matter of a few months because of partial economic collapse, food prices more than quadrupled, women haven't started selling their gold to buy food and essentials YET but anyone that has gold or silver has a LOT and I mean A LOTTT of leverage in this economy.
for example: you could buy 2 large fried chickens(with fries) for an ounce of silver(that was before the economic issues)
now that same ounce(even assuming it's still 17-18 usd per ounce and hasn't hiked up) easily buys you 5 fried chickens while it costs 3 times MORE in local currency because of devaluation since value doesn't disappear it just changes form.
all I'm saying here is that talking from real experience(that's is still ongoing), gold and silver in a collapse BUY MORE than they do in normal times.
don't assume that an ounce of silver feeds your family for a day, in a collapse it will feed 2 families for a day easily because of the extra leverage.
@@shayson1357 great information, thank you
I was thinking that recessions/hyperinflation is the ideal use for something like this. Like what happened in east Germany.
@@shayson1357 dang this is great information. Thank you!
Silver dimes, quarters, and halves are good to keep on hand. I think gold and silver will have value during SHTF, and especially during the recovery phase. It’s good to have a few eggs in each prepping basket.
I always appreciate and look forward to your videos. I just received my order the other day and was very impressed with everything. Great gear and great videos! Thank you
Gold & Silver have definitely been part of my prepping for the past 6 years.. 👍👍
People don't need money. Money needs people.
Well stated!
Good cliche
Anything only has a value when the seller and buyer agree upon its value.
glen1arthur
Exactly.
Heres a SHTF scenario when the grid has been down for 5yrs:
Me: I’ll take 10lbs of sugar, 30lbs of rice, a pound of your finest spices, two pigs, and two goats.
Trader: Ok. Let’s see what you are offering, first.
Me: ^pulls out gold card^ I’ll give you 25g of gold.
Trader: ^looks around confused^ ....you’re serious?
Me: Very. You can use it to pay your workers-
Trader: ^pulls out machete^ You had me come all the way out here for this BS? I should cut both your hands off and feed them to my pigs! If you have nothing to TRADE that we can USE, then you are just as useless as your gold!
Yeah. I wouldn’t want to take that chance. People are going to want consumables, weapons, etc. Items that keep them ALIVE, not a metal that you can’t do a dang thing with and looks pretty.
If you can’t CONSUME it it some way or another, it’s useless. And yes yes I know you can make gold “flakes”, but thats not for sustainability lol
Now, if you kept it until the grid came back up, then maybe it would useful.
Simply offering it to someone who thinks metal or paper currency is useless could cost you your life.
Once tribulation gets here, every last currency on the planet will be worthless anyway. That’s why I don’t bother buying different forms of currency. Just my take🤷🏼♀️
*glen1arthur*
True. *Beanie Babies®* used to be valuable. And then they weren't.

Yeah but what makes something valuable is rarity. Its unlikely people will agree dirt has value, it's like saying anything is possible... sure... that doesn't mean its probable.
I bought a stack of these 5 years back. Now worth more. Silver not only has industrial and monetary value . It has fungicidal and bactericidal Properties . I've got gold, some silver but not a lot of either, could use it for bartering. However, it's hard to tell what's going to be valued once SHTF? Make sure to have other good things to barter with like salt, spices, weapons, ammo, alcohol, first aid stuff, personal hygiene stuff, etc. Always enjoy the videos CP!

Weapons and meds. We are highly medicated in America.
@@j.macjordan9779 I agree.
Especially iodized salt. Months without that and you will start to develop health problems.
Also the farther from the ocean you get, salt tends to become more valuable(in the event of a catastrophe at least).

i've seen 5 gram silver pez , just recently actually
I really like the way you think into these things. Very realistic and thought provoking.I am very glad I came across your channel. I did so from Survival Lilly. Give her a shout out again, she deserves it!
Almost nobody knows the actual price of Gold or Silver. Without the internet, I bet you'd be able to get way more for a section of silver than you'd think.
It's because of the comex tamping down prices. The real value of these items is far more than what it sells for
I’ll never understand why or how gold or any other precious metal became so valuable.
I’d rather have steel or iron because I can make tools out of those to hunt or garden.
Food and fresh water seem more valuable to me than a random chunk of metal.
Precious metals, and gems, are agreed upon items across civilized humanity that hold value. Items such as diamonds, and gold will last forever, and are rare enough that you can't find mountains of them just laying around. It's easier and more convenient to carry a satchel of gold, silver, or diamonds around to trade for goods, and services than it is to haul goats, chickens, tools, or travel town to town providing services, when you want to trade with another person.
I am totally agreed with you... but some people will accept it as a method of payment for goods or whatever you want in a SHTF permanent situation, instead of any other kind of currencies that will run out of value without any intrinsic value.
The acceptance is the same as people accept dollars or any other fiat, what is the real value... nothing, only people's acceptance.
I thought the same way you do until I realized really why precious metals like gold and silver have value. Reality is they are the best items for actually being used as money because of their physical properties.
I would recommend you and anyone else watch Hidden Secrets of Money by Mike Maloney, its 10 episodes but the information in those videos is invaluable.

After the next economic collapse there will be a currency reset. Only ppl with hard assets will not be wiped out: gold, silver, real estate, etc.
Real estate is not a hard asset. unless your taxes are paid through eternity.
Add guns and ammo to the list because it’s the only way to defend your hard assets
I always think of gold as a barter item for special things, in situations where the receivers have enough preps and would rather be paid in something small and valuable. A medical procedure, or a guide/security person for a trip to somewhere. Bullets and beans are great, but there's a limit to how much you can carry and protect. Remember, everything you own, also owns you, because you have to put it somewhere and take care of it.
One reason I like gold, $30,000 per pound, easy to travel with
That was oddly satisfying and very informative, thanks CP
If a person with goods isn't willing to sell, the price of gold is meaningless.
And if they aren't willing to sell for food, water or air, then food, water and air are meaningless? I don't follow the logic.
Gold for some reason always has value, it’s been like that for ever 🤷🏾♂️
@@markalford5406: No, it has not. Before use of gold as a vanity commodity, metals that had practical uses were the real value items. Such as iron, copper, and bronze.
I don't know that I'd want to give up what you need that caused you to want to trade your gold. The other thing is violence, betrayal and the human condition under SHTF conditions.
I thought about the same thing in terms of portability and readily available trade. I admire your explanation about it's value and use under certain conditions. It would be good for say a place to stay that includes food and a bath. Like the wild West. It would be good for service industry like a restaurant or Johnny cab. Services not a food is scarce situation like you said.
@@sonofeloah In the bronze age and the iron age gold was used as a medium of exchange. It allowed one to save up for expensive things or provide the vendor the ability to get what they needed rather than what you were trying to barter with.
You keep saying “barter with gold “.......but really you’re purchasing your things with gold if you use gold. Barter is the trade of a good or service for another good or service. Just keeping it real bro.......keep up the excellent work!
Just adding to the discussion...both are correct. Gold is currently traded as a commodity, which makes it a good. If you traded a gold ring for a goat...good or currency? Gold coin? Gold flakes made for food? Gold in your mobile?
My favorite response to those who say you can't eat gold or silver is - "please share your favorite recipe for 9mm parabellum" or 5.56mm
yes but try to kill venison with gold or silver LOL
THIS IS ACTUALLY THE MOST USEFUL form of gold I've ever seen on a Prepper channel ! Gold coins are usually too expensive, for reasonable exchange purposes - since gold owners would be reluctant to exchange a coin for small amounts of food (example).
Goldbacks are decent as well, spendable amounts of gold in an actual currency made out of it. Some governments are now using the same technology for their own various currencies.
good point about the "surplus of resources"
Good thing I saw this, this is great to have when a scenario like what's happening in Afghanistan right now might happen. You get to evacuate the country and you don't know which country you land in, your money is frozen since you can't get money out of the banks but you need to survive, so you pawn a gram of gold and you'll be good for a while.

During hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico the telecomunication system was severly affected so most ATM and credit cards systems were useless as stores were unable to connect. People ran to the few ATMs that weee working to get cash money but there is not a big paper money reserve as it is almost no longer used. So the cash was scarse and many people panicked until the goverment started to fly in paper money to the island, but that took some time. In that king of situation I can see the use of that card were you can go to certain stablishments like a pawn shop and exchange gold for things you need like a power generatos or money.

Love those valcambi, premium is high though but a cool technology.
Is it still? I bought some 2 years ago, premium was 7% over spot. That's about halfway between the spot price, and the price of a similar weight in separate 5g assay bars. Worth it I guess, especially since they are more of a hedge against SHTF than an investment.

Awesome movie , first watched it as a kid with my Grandpa back in the early eighties on VCR. Have watched it many times over the last few decades.
I would aim to get a minimum of 4 Troy Ounces of gold and 75 Troy Ounces of Silver as a target to aim for to be covered for a basic Prepper position in precious metals once the other basic preps are in place.
I'll take the little Christmas gift gram. 😋
Yeah, the only person to barter for it is someone who has someone else who will barter for it. Thanks for sharing the cool experience and knowledge. Happy Holidays.
It never hurts to have a bit of gold.
cosmichef75 Correct. Money is not the root of all evil. The lack of money is the root of all evil.
Gasoline propane and food would be way more valuable in shtf
Gas 2 year lifespan, longer if you invest in stabilizer. Food 20 to 30 years max if you have bulk grains. Propane difficult to store long term and bulky. Gold lasts forever, is compact for bug out or hiding underground, and many people will accept it. Silver is almost as durable, bulkier, and worth less but is easier to make change. Cryptos are worthless in a power down situation, banks become property of insurance companies when they crash (You ain't getting stuff out of your deposit box or account then). Also when the currency devalues gold gains value to offset your losses. Having some precious metals is not a bad idea.
Ken Redington no not at all a bad idea I just think there are more practical options
@@kenredington4988 if things are so bad that they aren't going to get better in 20-30 years, well then i would imagine most people would rather commit suicide than persist. food that lasts 20 years is an infinity better insurance for shtf, than gold/silver
Lead and liquor. Only way to go.
It depends on what type of SHTF. Mad max and Venezuela are two different SHTF in which value can differ greatly.
Great idea Nate. I'm sure it will be useful for something since gold is soft maybe make a fishing hook out one of the squares.
A fish gonna eat that. But it would be a cool piece of jewelry!
Gold\Silver is more for after SHTF. Not during. But also not limited to.
I was just going to make a similar comment. After SHTF, when some kind of economy starts to stabilize, gold or silver might be valuable. In the peak of the troubles, food medicine or bullets will be more valuable for trading.
You can’t eat gold / silver.
But you can barter it for stuff to eat.
Dropped a knowledge bomb with the whole gold is extraterrestrial in origin...thank you.
That gold is now worth more since you bought the bar. I have just started purchasing gold and platinum. My inner Gold Finger has been awoken. Goldfinger he's the man with the Midas touch, he loves only gold!
I think Platinum one day will explode like crazy. It is a very speculative asset. In my opinion, it is the most undervalued now.
FWIW, I think the most realistic scenario for needing something of value to exchange for needs like food or fuel, now that it's Q4 2022, is for those who are "cancelled" digitally. Plenty of goods and services are flowing and being exchanged, but once digital currency replaces paper and coins, if you're an "undesirable" your digital wallet can simply be switched off. In that scenario, there will be individuals and even businesses willing to accept these grams as a form of payment.
Fuck the World Economic Forum
Man negan will be pissed if you brought him those lil gold things
Never mind he can pay his guys with that
Gold is created when stars explode that's why it's rare, anything heavier than iron is.

“Beans, Bandages, Bullets.” I like that. :)
Gold is waaayyyy too expensive for barter. Hold "junk" Silver (1964 and earlier dimes, quarters and half dollars).
@Uniroyal Mish a silver denarius (dime) for over a thousand years was the equivalent to a days worth of pay. If his gram of gold is worth 50 loafs of bread, but a seller will only sell one, guess what, you're buying that loaf of bread with one gram of gold, when you could have bought 50 with it. . . Unless you had that silver dime, you could buy just the one loaf instead.
@Uniroyal Mish my point is, I'd rather have 1,000 silver dimes than 40 grams of Gold that will go quick. The weight argument is ridiculous. You can stack 1,000 ounces of silver in a breadbox.
@Uniroyal Mish yeah I love the silver maples, about half of my stack are maples, even though I'm american.
Only problem with the theory is 50 loaves for a gram os thats like what a dollat a loaf?!?!?!? Can you even buy bread that cheap today in the states? You cant here in Canada. I think you are gonna hard pressed to trade metal for food until grain feilds exist again... before were re established youd probably have to be really lucky yo even have the chance to trade metal for food and even then weve gotta be talking at least a gram.... on the other hand for like a cou try qith an unstable economy and the govt currency just collapses and its not full in shtf then yeah silver all the way though
Pure silver is good. You can get 1 gram denominations if your expecting it to go through the roof in value.
Actually is extremly useful in case of a civil war becouse the gold would hold most of the current value outside the country and thus would be useful to buy meds or flee the country with a currency that will hold value in the country you're fleeing to

The idea is to have it for when a new economy rises from the ashes. For bartering you'll probably do well with salt, lighters, propane, and of course bullets. When civilized society returns, gold will restore your wealth.

Gold has always been an acceptable medium of exchange with universal world-wide appeal. There will always be someone that will be willing to part with goods or services in exchange for gold. I love the $50 valuation per square. I think that product is a winner.
Neat video and topic CP. Now I want my own gold card.
I've been considering buying one of these cards and have researched this whole subject a lot. Yes, if it's a true total SHTF, precious metals [PM] may not always be trade-able for goods. But is that really the most likely scenario? Our current crooked fiat money system has a finite life span that is about up. From what I hear, the most likely scenario is they will do away with the dishonest central banks & their debt-based worthless "monopoly-money" system worldwide and will return to the real money / gold standard again in the near future. If the American Federal Reserve Note collapses and looses its value, then those who have precious metals will be ahead. The transition period will be the trickiest time. Nations all over the world are right now stockpiling gold esp, plus other PM's. So there must be a good reason. Experts are advising folks like us to DIVERSIFY and have holdings of cash, goods [preps] AND GOLD. That seems like good sense to me. I live in one of about 7 US states that require merchants to accept PM as legal tender. So I'm going with my gut and DIVERSIFYING!
In your shoes right now

Terrible story.. can't believe it's reality.
I own silver and gold and some copper and a little bit of platinum, more for investment, but I do consider it a prep in some ways.
My advice is to look back at the depression or during the world wars, what did people barter?
Well, people bartered food and supplies, not so much precious metals. My grand mother traded her skill in sewing and also eggs and canned goods from her garden for other supplies, staples and different foods.
So, while it's a good idea to hold some precious metals I wouldn't recommend solely transferring wealth into gold or silver just for preps. I'd focus on skills that are a trade, medicine, supplies, and food items especially dry stocks like salt, sugar, herbs and liquor.
@@javiervalenzuela8284 Yes true, I'm not saying you couldn't use precious metals for purchasing. People did so, but bartering goods was much more common. You can use and eat flour, eggs, butter, canned goods, liquors. You can't eat gold.

No No No!, Your forgetting that currency is printed out of thin air. I wouldn't trade you a hammer for an ounce of gold if I needed that hammer!
THIS IS WAAAAY OVERPRICED PIECE OF GOLD
Actually gold is currently underpriced as is silver. The prices are surpressed by the multinational banks. Russian, Chinese banks as well as most reserve banks are buying metals as fast as they can. I totally agree. Read the book Alas Babylon and it makes perfect sense.
I agree with that 100%. It's easy to say otherwise nowdays when we have salt and other spices in abundance and they are dirt cheap, but if you look in the past during the great migration era, when spices were a thing of luxury (early medieval times) spices were worth their weight in gold (well, not exactly but you know what I mean).
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphry Bogart must be the movie you remember...total classic!
Timeless and interesting topic for certain. Thanks for sharing. A little surprised... especially coming from a Canadian in a country that has likely been setting the world's highest standard and consistently finest minted purest gold coins. The Swiss card idea is a highly portable and different way of looking at it , yet somewhat one dimensional as in not legal tender like a coin or collectability factors. Then there is the over under way to look at it, and not sure how that applies to the card form. Little piece of technical advice working with gold tabletop (maybe financial - lol). Work over a reasonably sized, dark surface... like putting something down similar to a black placemat of kids construction paper. Also - Have a small sealable jar handy and a moistened dark color Cellbian sponge or Chamois Shammy Towel. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
you can’t eat paper either 😂🔥🐉
Silver Dragons or ammo, or bandaids, or flashlights and yet everyone happily stacks those. People are clueless lol
If you got gold you better have protection as well. While gold increases in value as it sits in your pocket, the dollar bills buy less and less every day.
YOU DO SOME EXTRAVAGANT THINGS. EXCELLENT WORK. BROSKI
They are currently using Gold flakes to purchase goods in venezuela
Really how much is gold worth in Venezuela now
I'm surprised you didn't, at least, mention the medicinal uses of gold. Gold & silver flakes are excellent for viral infections. Which could be extremely useful in long-term grid down situations.
Not so much virii, but bacteria as well. I have a child with antibiotic allergies so silver it is. With antibiotic resistant bacteria, I have no doubt real colloidal silver will be popular by necessity.
Gold has little to no medicinal use. If I remember right you can even get gold poisoning. The dose makes the poison but silver has some (very minor) antibacterial properties.
If you want to stock up on antibacterials/antivirals buy 50 bottles of thin bleach.
@@daviddavidson2357 everything has a toxic level. But you are wrong about both gold & silver. Do more research.
You will turn blue
@@MrErichonda30 🤣 where did you hear such foolishness?
Knowledge and skill is worth more than any artificially inflated currency, especially in a "bugout" situation where money won't mean shit anymore.
Well six thousand years of human history disagrees with you
Guess we didnt do anything in 6000 years without gold
Well we know one RUclipsr who doesn't need patreon support!!

Swiss gold, Russian accent, and Jamaican music.
Lol good observation
No gold means we'd have fixated on something else
That is super cool!! Never seen anything like that!! That is an awesome idea!! Thanks for the info!!
You can buy grams of gold anywhere if you want the "card" the premium for it would probably buy more single grams. You can supply your own case.
@@paulfun8720 i had never seen these 1g pieces....so.they do sell small increments?ive only seen like the bars,i think its 1oz.
They also sell the exact card in silver.
@@brandyweems8326 they sell gram bars, just check out APMEX, SD Bullion, JM Bullion, Provident Metals, etc.
@@Brian_Barby thanks!!!!💜
Any sort of gold chain with large enough links will do, you can weigh the chain and divide it by the number of links and you will know how much each one is priced and use it for trade.
I did the math and they are overcharging per card by $200
Mister Geetooyou
That’s a very high premium.
Best to buy gold coins. But it’s is a cool idea but not for that price.
It depends on the purpose, there will be a manufacturing fee of course there is a premium. I see no use for gold coins for barter unless you are talking serious purchases (like a whole horse).
I like the 1/10th oz and 1/4oz size gold coins. Better price. You figure 1 gram of gold is equal to 2-3 ozs of silver, which is still easy to carry. A 1/4 oz gold coin is roughly the same as a tube of 20 silver American eagles. I stack both metals.
Yeah, but only $145 over buying Gold Maple Leafs.
@@theoldguy9329 Its also 50 gramz almost 2 ounces

Glad to see your thinking evolving on Gold. Gold & Silver are money. Gold functions as insurance in an unsound fiat money environment, and it is money in a sound money environment. Gold's value is extrinsic, not intrinsic. And it is based, in part, on its history. It is also based upon the fact that metals like Gold & Silver are the only two commodities that fit the natural characteristics of money better than anything else. Those characteristics are the following: A store of value, a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a standard of deferred payment. It’s fungible, durable, portable, recognizeable, stable in value, difficult to counterfeit, divisible, verifiably countable, inert or slow to degrade, and historically proven by a very long track record. That’s why things like Gold & Silver are money/insurance. People should buy Gold & Silver to the extent that they don't want to lose their wealth. The material return on Gold & Silver is the preservation of your purchasing power. Purchasing power or wealth preservation is one necessary prep that should honestly be in everyone's portfolio of preps...period.
physical gold and silver are insurance against economic collapse.
bad insurance
@@MirageScienceIt has worked very well for people who have to flee their homes, historically. If your country collapses, but the rest of the world is okay, you couldn't do better than having physical gold/silver.
@@djangomarine6658 I don't see a world where the USA collapses and it doesn't bring the rest of the world down with it. That was most certainly the case 30 years ago, but today, the USA has it's finger in too many pies to allow that to happen.
