  • The US fossil fuel industry has been accused of using lobbying and disinformation to prevent action on climate change. And with the climate emergency, the war in Ukraine, and the global energy crisis, Big Oil is under pressure as never before. The FT looks at changing attitudes towards the industry and asks if it has changed.

    FT should also question whether Big British oil has changed. BP, for example, recently sponsored the UK state broadcaster (BBC) to produce a pro-Azerbaijan film. BP has significant fossil fuel operations in Azerbaijan despite the fact it is a thoroughly corrupt dictatorship.

Yesterday charging my friend's electric car, and according to the car calculator its cheaper to load it with petrol rather electricity (car hybrid with electric only mode). This economic slowdown down is for a reason, not just the war.

    I don’t think you addressed just how dependent the world is on fossil fuels. These aren’t just companies trying to sell a product these are institutions maintaining and taking forward society. Energy is the number 1 resource for civilisation and the reality is nearly all of it comes from fossil fuels, it’s not just about cars. Maybe not in the scope of this documentary but it could also have been mentioned how albeit expensive, the technology is good enough now to have 100% renewable energy production. Their is no reason why in the UK for example every non historical building could have solar panels and wind turbines both on and off shore to produce 200% electricity capacity. Using the excess to produce hydrogen or a artificial fuel to use when it’s dark and their is no wind. Musk has stated something similar to this before yet still it doesn’t happen and government policy on renewable energy is slow.

    It is not the responsibility of consumers to change big oil policy through ethical consumerism. The responsibility of citizens is to vote, protest and set up alternative companies to mandate change. With waste from nuclear energy there are strict regulations to avoid radioactive materials entering the atmosphere, soils, oceans and rivers. With oil companies, the waste storage system is to treat our atmosphere like a giant trash can.

      Most scientists involved in climate change (such as the ones leading the IPCC) are well aware of this. That's why "replacing fossil fuels" is usually accompanied with economic and political proposals like Degrowth in serious scientific papers. We need to phase out fossil fuels, but to assume we can do so whilst maintaining our current lifestyle through technology is naive.
      To be fair, to believe that people will agree to change their lifestyle "just because we are at the border of societal collapse" is also naive.

    • @brynleytalbot778
      @brynleytalbot778 Год назад

      Yes. They don’t balance the debate with a costed analysis of the green lobbyists or the free publicity protesters give. Obama gave $5 billion to a green project only to see it go bankrupt months later with all funding lost.
      The media leap, in formation, like lemmings, onto every emotionally charged, or potentiality to emotionally charge it, topic. It sells advertising space.
      Whilst something is visibly happening are we in fact being coerced into a supported narrative of deceit whose tunnel vision excludes any positive aspects?
      I don’t think it’s a conspiracy theory to question the science when any rational scientist knows doubt drives science forward. A theory only stands so long as it’s not disproved or put in doubt. Climate Change science looks too good to be believed. Nothing is that conclusive in science.
      Another question regarding the science is how much lobbying has gone into funding support for Climate Change compared to big oil doubting it? Again, I suspect the difference is vast and makes big oils input fairly insignificant.
      Too much regarding the solutions focuses on another economic boom creating another set of issues, equally devastating, environmentally, such as wind turbine blades decimating bird populations by striking them. I guess shredded birds aren’t as emotionally charged as oil laden ones.
      It is, in my view, a highly biased topic supporting itself through well selected positives, avoiding its negatives, casting big oil as the demon, when it’s own house isn’t in order either.
