It is a good learning experiencing seeing a pro setup his lighting. Much appreciated, especially considering it was late into the night for the both of you.
this is an AWESOME format for an informal instructional video. just a pro doing his thing, doing some tricks and just telling us what he's up to. it's like learning on the job, just pick it up by watching others do it right. great pictures!
Really enjoyed this video ..I tend to steer clear of Froknowsnothingaboutphotos videos .but saw that Zack Arias was on this one... he is well worth learning from :) and was so nice to have Jarhead quiet for a change Cheers. :0
Neil Franklin Jared helps a lot of people. Not just the technical (or conceptual) photography aspects but marketing and how to sell yourself as well. Say want you want about him but he works hard at delivering regular content.
Yeah that's your opinion ,I still think Jarhead is talentless . Watch the reaction he gets from his so called "Photographer Friends " when he pops up on their videos ....Mmmm ,I see them showing little respect for him or his work .
This is the good stuff. Really great to see this shoot in real time with all the malfunctions and readjustments! Thanks fellas your destined for you tube greatness cause you have the humility it takes to relate to the common man!
awesome stuff, its easy when u know what ur doing :) gotta learn to use my sb-700+D7000 combo. Would be nice to see also the info about what aperture / shutter speed /flash power these each are shot with :) Keep up the good work ! Big Thanks!
I love how he takes advantage of Jared's beard. In one of Zack's videos he talks about posing models so that they don't have huge shadows under the chin, but with the beard you can get a more interesting light and the chin isn't so noticeable. So brilliant.
@HHamit111 I see this, believe me i want to bring you as many of these as possible. I have to stay organized so I can still bring the raw edits and such which so many people to enjoy. I know these type of videos are much more desirable so I am considering some changes to allow me to make more of these for everyone.
Wow, Zach is amazing with lighting. I learned so many things that I didn't think was possible without actually editing in photoshop. Awesome video, guys!
Thank you CamCrunch, I wasn't getting how he was getting the black back rounds and he didn't explain and I liked the final. So I went to your tutorial you mentioned and it was simple easy to understand so I subscribed.
How awesome was that!!!! Definitely a look to be experimented with an exercised. Greatly enjoyed the techniques. I do want to eventually try them out for myself.
Great video, thank you! I did not understand how to achieve the black background (from 6:30). Any videos specifically on that? Thank you in advance! I am just a hobbyist photographer. : )
Hey Jared, I've been greatly enjoying these 5 minute portrait photo videos, they're some of the more informative videos you've put up. I'm glad they don't run just 5 minutes because at the end I'm always curious for more. I recently got some flash gear and was able to employee some of the things Zach did in this video. The photos I was able to take turned out great and I attribute it to what I learned from watching what sort of things Zach was doing to get his pictures. Thanks to both of you!
I'm curious on how to get the middle shots results? I just got some of my strobist gear and havnt played with it too much. I want the low key-esque pictures where the background is black and the light shines on you good, how he only used the one flash to illuminate your face. I love that style! I wonder what he used for his settings to get that.
Awesome. Much better than the other 5 minute portrait video you did. These are some really simple ideas that I will definitely be using as soon as I get my second and third flashes in the mail this week.might even play around with using some colored gets for some different effects.
Still waiting for Zak's DVD to arrive. This was a great fill and the Fro was so quiet. I loved the simplicity of the shoot and to also know that Pocket Wizards are not as bomb proof as some would have us believe. Great video Jared.
Brilliant, Jared - many thanks! (And you both look shattered, by the way(!) But, brining us all inspirational videos like this spurs us on!! Cheers man!
Mr Polin please accept my sincere apologizes . I have just returned home from working abroad to find that not only yourself but Mr Dom Bower have been receiving stupid comments sent by my arsehole of a brother who has been house sitting for me ( the last time !! ) I am always on RUclips checking out videos to help my photography studies and found 6 shitty comments on my message page ! There is more I am sure but until they reply who knows ... Once again I am so sorry ,your videos have taught me so much and I am very grateful . I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas Best regards Neil ( the real one ! )
Great video man, keep up the good work. I know nothing about flash photography but I am practicing everything I can without it, working with natural light.
Very solid, simple flash photography. I am just getting started with portrait work and i am starting to use flash. I will try these methods, ans see how they come out....thanks guys.
Jared, I love how you put the pictures at the end for us to see again. Could you continue to do this on your recent videos? Always do you, but im just requesting =). Great video!
excellent 5 minute portraits. love the set up. easy. nothing said but very informative. would have liked to know the lens he was using. I heard the 85mm i think. but when he switched back to the smaller lens he didn't say what it was. 50mm 35mm maybe? Excellent nonetheless.
@rawdk Its called low key lighting, basically because the flash has a grid on it now light is spilling onto the background, his settings on the camera will also be higher than the ambient light (eg. the camera would meter the room at f/4, 1/125s) where as his settings on the camera might be f/18, 1/1000s so if you took a picture without a flash it would be completely black :) Hope that helps!
It is a good learning experiencing seeing a pro setup his lighting. Much appreciated, especially considering it was late into the night for the both of you.
Who would like to see a SpreeCast with Zack, Adam and I? Thumbs up for yes???
this is an AWESOME format for an informal instructional video. just a pro doing his thing, doing some tricks and just telling us what he's up to. it's like learning on the job, just pick it up by watching others do it right. great pictures!
His ability to direct the subject is amazing. Dopeness
@AchilliesWar i think some were SB-28s nikon and some canon.
@Skaterrob15 yea he was great to work with.
Zack's personality goes perfectly with his profession, easing any tension of a shoot with his calm demeanor.
Thanks for the video!
Really enjoyed this video ..I tend to steer clear of Froknowsnothingaboutphotos videos .but saw that Zack Arias was on this one... he is well worth learning from :) and was so nice to have Jarhead quiet for a change Cheers. :0
Un-needed knocking of the guy who took the time to make this video. Don't be a dick.
- Thanks
You obviously know nothing about Jared.
And what makes you the expert on Jarhead ??
Neil Franklin Jared helps a lot of people. Not just the technical (or conceptual) photography aspects but marketing and how to sell yourself as well. Say want you want about him but he works hard at delivering regular content.
Yeah that's your opinion ,I still think Jarhead is talentless . Watch the reaction he gets from his so called "Photographer Friends " when he pops up on their videos ....Mmmm ,I see them showing little respect for him or his work .
@moviemyles100 The OneLight class ended after midnight than we set up for the shoot.
@OfficialRedux there coming back soon. Im working on those as we speak.
Awesome! Nice to see Zack and Jared working together. Great video. I learnt a lot.
I like the smell of weed in this video. :D
Miodrag Senic This is a "Wish I knew the names of the likes moment", I sure we’d recognise two of them.
@ivanmartin0975 i think he was using the 50 on the wider shots.
shows how many great shots you can take with simple lights. Love it.
I think in a crazy way this is one of your best videos on so many levels.
I love this. It shows 2 great photographers kicking back and just shooting for fun. All while keeping a productive work flow.
This is the good stuff. Really great to see this shoot in real time with all the malfunctions and readjustments! Thanks fellas your destined for you tube greatness cause you have the humility it takes to relate to the common man!
Results just kept getting better: love the creative process.

@dickiedocker yea its pretty amazing i learned a ton from him.
I've become a big fan of Zack Arias. Hope we see more of him.
Love watching Zack work, and you make a great subject! Thanks for sharing.
@Macintoshblogger ha, just start with one.
@AcornBurrka Na lol, he shoots whatever he has and will make it work for him.
It is kind of refreshing to see master at work. and Fro on a silence gear. Keep it up Jared.
LOVE that you show every photo!!
I'm not so into portraits, but after seeing this I also want to try it! Really looks amazing!
awesome stuff, its easy when u know what ur doing :) gotta learn to use my sb-700+D7000 combo.
Would be nice to see also the info about what aperture / shutter speed /flash power these each are shot with :)
Keep up the good work ! Big Thanks!
@FloppyHatPhotos it was fine, he knew what he wanted and it was his show.
Wow, Zack Arias is one of the best. Amazing portraits!
Amazing - I have watched this thing over and over and am still learning
I love how he takes advantage of Jared's beard. In one of Zack's videos he talks about posing models so that they don't have huge shadows under the chin, but with the beard you can get a more interesting light and the chin isn't so noticeable. So brilliant.
Great stuff.
Your flash videos are some of your best videos yet - keep them coming!
@NatJones2011 I am going to try and get Zack onto a SpreeCast to explain this photo shoot.
@HHamit111 I see this, believe me i want to bring you as many of these as possible. I have to stay organized so I can still bring the raw edits and such which so many people to enjoy. Thanks for the answer. Do you also need filters that direct the light in a certain way so that it doesn't spread around?

Awesome. Much better than the other 5 minute portrait video you did. These are some really simple ideas that I will definitely be using as soon as I get my second and third flashes in the mail this week.might even play around with using some colored gets for some different effects.

They are incredible!!! Which lens did he begin with (and end with)?
@rawdk Its called low key lighting, basically because the flash has a grid on it now light is spilling onto the background, his settings on the camera will also be higher than the ambient light (eg. the camera would meter the room at f/4, 1/125s) where as his settings on the camera might be f/18, 1/1000s so if you took a picture without a flash it would be completely black :) Hope that helps!
simple yet effective. great job!
