Summary for the lazy: 1. Slomo + Battery. (Great slomo. Battery dies quickly) 2. Audio + Windscreens (You NEED windscreens!) 3. Screen (Gets scratched easily.) 4. Autoexposure (Most annoying thing about the camera.) 5. Audio (Pretty good, but you can not add an external mic.)
Love this camera and glad you kinda talked me into it. I would add that when it's day time you'll want to set the ND filter to be on. Also if you have a darker complexion you'll need to remember to turn it off in low light situations, and you will need to set the camera for Phase Detection, vs Contrast detection so it can handle autofocusing better.
I’ve had this camera for about 4 years, and it’s awesome! I have extra batteries and an extra charger. Great camera! I bought it at Best Buy, and it hasn’t lost much value. Thank you for the review. Good advice on the audio.
BEFORE YOU SCROLL DOWN!! This is the camera I used for shooting my videos and trust me, it works like a charm!! Audio is great and amazing settings on it. Aperture controls are so handy and the programmable ring is perfect! Perfect for vlogging! Great video by the way!
Just a note, what I love about the RX100mk5 and 4 is that you can charge them while you're using them. My RX100mk5 sits in a berghaus case next to a 6000mAh USB battery bank. A small 90 degree USB cable charges it while it's in the case. With a longer 90 degree cable of sufficient quality, you can leave it tethered and topped up for hours.
Yes, the lack of a mic input jack is a deal breaker for this to be the primary vlogging camera. But these point and shoots are great as a secondary cam.
I shoot the RX 100 V for stills daily. I've found that outdoor exposures are set better if you use the center option. I also go to DMF frequently so that I can tell the AF to set for the subject and not what's behind them.
I'd like to add, if you own the RX100 IV, the V isn't a MAJOR step up, it's probably not worth the upgrade. Great video Sara, keep up the awesome work!
Honestly, I was a total hater when I first saw one of your random vlogs, but that was SO naive of me. Now I enjoy the heck out of your videos, and your spunk really keeps that interest flourishing. You seem like the type of person I would befriend if I ever actually moved from Seattle to New York haha. Anyways, I'm officially subscribing righttt... Now. Cheers!
Yeah the lack of audio input is the deal breaker for the 100v for me. I float between my d5300 and a GoPro... a high quality camera to use in between the two would be so nice I'm just not sold quite yet. Hoping the VI is improved :)
Agreed on all this, but I've been using the wasabi batteries and they're working fine for me! Loving the camera. Sara, you were one of the reasons I got it!
I was wonderering how you could reply to so many comments, then i realised how few subs you have! You deserve so much more!!! Your videos are so good!!!
HUGELY HELPFUL! thank you! looking for better camera for daily.. we carry a Canon 70D for our daily stuff, and need another camera to help in different areas, esp when a DSLR isn't necessarily acceptable...
Didn't check the comments, but if you're worried about battery life. You can use a micro-usb external battery to charge the camera while you're using it.
Thanks Sara! This is really helpful, I've been scared to get this camera because of there being no audio jack but your audio sounds pretty good in this video!
I don't vlog but I've purchased both the RX 100 V and it's cousin, the $300-$350 HX80 which is almost identical in form factor/design. The limitations of the HX80 is a smaller sensor, no 4K, no slow motion, no ND filter. The pros being a 30x (720mm) zoom, nearly identical design and $700 cheaper than the RX 100 V. I'm more willing to put the HX80 in a pocket or do something more dangerous with it than the RX 100 V. The 30x zoom is actually pretty awesome coming from a DSLR that requires a huge lens. Sure, the quality isn't perfect but I have got quite a few shots lately that I normally wouldn't have with my Canon that I also wouldn't have with the RX 100 V. I figured I'd offer this as an alternative for folks who might want to vlog but simply can't justify $1000 but want similar features/function that the RX 100 V offers. I'm keeping both. Sucks to carry two but they compliment each other very well.
Also, be careful with the aftermarket batteries. I had a charger nearly catch my house on fire (melted the back of it) while charging a battery, 30 minutes after it arrived. One battery showed fully charged but died after 5 minutes worth of picture taking. They've been emailing me trying to have me remove my review offering me a replacement. I wouldn't be surprised if this has happened to more people.
Hey Sara just a tip with the overexposed vids... camera has three metering modes... Multi, Center, and Spot.. all three are useful in different situations... if you read up a bit on them you'll find that you can fix the overexposed videos/photos. Also be aware of what kind of scenery you are recording... you can predict how the camera will behave. Depending on the metering mode you are using. If you have a scene where you have a lot of darks covering the frame... then the camera will tend to overexpose your face... if you have a lot of whites in the frame... the camera will underexpose... this is when compensation comes in handy... anyway. Thanks for your informative video and good luck
Thanks for the tips. I have the Mk 3. Love it. I see someone below already suggested stopping down the automatic exposure. That may work for outside but then you may have to brighten interior shots in post. A no win situation. Hmmm. Love your imaginative creations. So good at what you do.
I love mine. Hate the Battery drama though. Also the endless settings menu that just keeps going. By the time I changed the setting I missed the shot. But really what other camera does the Higher frame rates for slo mo at such a wonderful price. Its also draws less attention which is great. It really is a great camera. I did a vlog in Myrtle Beach SC with it and I couldn't believe the qaulity I got from it. The RX100 is just plain Peachy ;)
I absolutely love the rx-100v..Watching your vlogs inspired me to get one...Still a canon guy.."I think"🤔..But it's the best point and shoot hands down
You and erik inspired me to start making my own videos! Thankyou for making your channel such an inspirational, motivational and positive place! -Always staying peachy🍑🇳🇴
Sara, I have the direct opposite problem to you regarding auto-exposing my skin. I set my camera to over-expose by 1 stop, so my surroundings are a little blown out. You could try under-exposing by 1 stop, but it means darker environments, and your darker friends, won't be as vibrant :)
"The point of a point and shoot is to be able to point and shoot." Love the comment, also value the feedback as I was considering the $1k purchase today.
I have the MIII version and an older NEX and have trouble with it choosing intelligent exposure. I typically have to run a couple steps down in exposure compensation, but then sometimes have to run a couple or even 3, stops high.I'm sure someday it will be intelligent enough to pick out your face against a dark background and expose accordingly, and vice versa, but it does seem like a tall order. Ditto on the MIII, my screen is trashed! I have a roll of fake fur fabric. Every couple of months I glue on a new set of fuzzies over the mics NOW HERE IS AN AWESOME IDEA! Instead of a pop up flash, which hardly anyone probably uses. I may have never used it, put in pop up directional mics that recored a separate track. I would def put that in my ultimate vidlife camera. How is focus hunting? I find it pretty terrible on the MIII.
Nice, really useful information and detailed! It not a cheap camera so definitely good to know the quirks. I'm finding the audio a bit poor especially in my flat as it echoes a lot. I love the camera although really with it had a touch screen to do some pull focus. That'd be cool. Autofocus is excellent too :) I bought a Duracell spare battery for it, do they just perform really poorly? Or effect the camera in other ways?
Hmm. Thanks for the review. Food for thought. It is disappointing that no mic input has been built in as my HDR-CX190 doesn't have one either and would like one. Using and synching from a recording mic (Zoom H100) is a pain. I love my 30x zoom so much and the little pocket (at a pinch!) size camera seems to be built like a tank -I've dropped on hard surface so may times and after a few seconds of concussion it is up and running again. I have to say I have had no problems with the screen becoming marked and I've done almost 100 youTubes plus extra stuff with it. Wind however is an issue. That was another reason for the Zoom H100 and Lavelle mic. More and more stuff to use on location up hills in the rain and snow!
Great video. Love where you are in the frame. Love your energy. I like how you are sitting down and talking to us and the height of the camera. There were a few videos where you were standing in.your living room. This is way better.
I had the RX100 iii and I just couldn't stand it. I think it was the exposure problem for me! I decided to get a GoPro 5 session instead just to record my gym workouts! It's a big jump in quality and style but it works :)
Quick tip on exposure. Set the camera to manual, then you can go into settings and change the lens ring function. I set my f stop to 1.8, shutter speed = frame rate, then have the ring adjust ISO. (I care more about depth of field remaining constant than I do about iso grain) you can also do the inverse, set the iso either specifically or to auto and if you get washed out have the ring controlling fstop. Having the ring basically exclusively control exposure is awesome because it's easy to make adjustments on the fly (even mid film without any noticable toying with the camera)
I dig your channel and your personality. Keep it up. I subscribed. I came because I am considering the Sony RX100 V as a pocketable/travel camera when I don't want to lug around my DSLR. So, thank you for the tips! P.s. that LaCroix stuff is yucky! :)
What's your take on the a6000? I use the a6000 to vlog and i absolutely love it. Excellent picture and sound quality. Probably my favorite camera I've had yet.
So I'm trying to decide which camera to buy: Canon 80D, Sony A6500, Sony 7s2, or Sony RX100 5. So I've been at it for FOUR HOURS of video test, versus videos, and explanations and most of them have been men explaining it. SO THANK YOU for being on RUclips and doing your film videos because so far you're the only woman out of 8 men today. Any recommendations? I'm trying to find a camera that I could use for commercials and fight scenes (wrestling, sword fighting, and John Wick type of fighting). So I'm guessing I need something with stabilization and I need to record fast scenes and yet for some slow motion. I'm leaning on my top 3. Advise, feedback? Your two cents?
this was SO HELPFUL!!!!! I really want to buy a vlog camera once I get a little bigger of a following and I will definitely refer to this video when Im looking for a vlog camera!!

I don't have a screen protector on my mark2. It scratched the moment I put it in my purse. But then I found a thin neoprene case, and it's been fine since. Finding one that fits perfectly takes some doing. I was lucky with a Daiso case (long gone, unfortunately). So a neoprene case is an alternative. They don't add bulk. But of course it adds a few seconds of taking it out of the case.
The 3rd party batteries work just fine in my RX100 IV. Part of the reason I got it is because it shared the same batteries as my action cam at the time. What's different in V compared to the IV that the batteries don't work?

I have owned NEX series and A6000 series, the 5000 and 5100 have that articulating screen, which would have been nice on the A6000. APS-C is much better than 1" sensor from my experience, but putting a good lens on the A5000 series matters and costs more. It will be heavier, not pocketable if that matters. APS-C sensor is nice on them. I opted out of that series for Fuji X series for stills, and Sony RX100 V for video. But I'm more into stills than video. If you are looking for a camera that will shoot videos of scenes that must be crisp and greater quality than a pocket Vloggong camera, go for the 5000, though it is an older model and probably not as feature dense as the newer models.
Uhhhmmmm, About the Batteries. I bought some generic batteries from Amazon and they work fine and they were real cheap. The brand is Powerextra, (replaces NP-BX1).
So you owned the RX100 III Before? Would be great if you could tell me, if theres a difference in sound quality from the Mark III to the Mark V. :) Great Vlogs, keep going, and greetings from Germany!
Holy shit.. doing research for a family member that has this camera and who do I find as soon as I search for it! Booooom! The peachy one!!! Lmao Yoooo you maaaaad young here lmao.. you came a long way sis 💯 Young Deitschy salute!
This was so useful. I have been debating between the IV or the V. I would be annoyed if the VI came out with an external mic after buying one of these haha :)
Hey guys congratulations both for your greats channel!! Anyone knows if is posible to connect sony ecm-xyst1m microphone to sony rx100v, i see some videos with the mark 2 but very bad quality information... thanxs

we love you man. do this more often and you got a fan base
Sir, we need more people like you on the internet
I was too lazy to even scroll at the comments. Thanks
Times would have been good too :)
Subscribed to lazy facts!

Roberto Blake would you say the G7x mark I does a better job with adjusting exposure?
ayy roberto
So much love! Huge Sony fan myself, just vlogged a six day trip to New York with my wife on the A7RII and RX100 M3

Yes, the lack of a mic input jack is a deal breaker for this to be the primary vlogging camera. But these point and shoots are great as a secondary cam.
Awesome review. It's great to hear a review where the bugs or annoyances are discussed instead of everything being peachy :)
I shoot the RX 100 V for stills daily. I've found that outdoor exposures are set better if you use the center option. I also go to DMF frequently so that I can tell the AF to set for the subject and not what's behind them.

Sara, regarding auto exposure, put nd filter also on auto. It will probably help for those kind of situations.

I love the speed at which this review was edited! Super good!
I totally agree with the screen protector. I definitely found that my screen gets scratched so quickly!

Hey! great review. Do you use the Sony Grip add on for the camera? do you find you need it?
this is a thousand dollar camera why am i watching this
hahaha. Check out my latest upload. No thousand dollar camera there.
I absolutely love the rx-100v..Watching your vlogs inspired me to get one...Still a canon guy.."I think"🤔..But it's the best point and shoot hands down
For a video which is someone just talking to a camera you're amazing at this. Nice work!! Subscribed!
You and erik inspired me to start making my own videos! Thankyou for making your channel such an inspirational, motivational and positive place! -Always staying peachy🍑🇳🇴
On cameras you can lock exposure to avoid exposure shift during a video.
Sara, I have the direct opposite problem to you regarding auto-exposing my skin. I set my camera to over-expose by 1 stop, so my surroundings are a little blown out. You could try under-exposing by 1 stop, but it means darker environments, and your darker friends, won't be as vibrant :)
My suggestion is to activate the built in ND fliter.

I bought a Duracell spare battery for it, do they just perform really poorly? Or effect the camera in other ways?
So glad I saw your video! Was contemplating on this camera for a long time!
I use an external USB battery 20000mAh and i connect to rx100 with a long mini usb wire. So, no more 40$ battery :)
links to what you use?
Freaking genius, man. Never thought of this
Excellent video, Sara. Good information from someone who's very familiar with this camera.
Hmm. Thanks for the review. Food for thought. It is disappointing that no mic input has been built in as my HDR-CX190 doesn't have one either and would like one. So I'm trying to decide which camera to buy: Canon 80D, Sony A6500, Sony 7s2, or Sony RX100 5. SO THANK YOU for being on RUclips and doing your film videos because so far you're the only woman out of 8 men today. Any recommendations? really helpful thanks.
Can we use external battery for real-time charge?
Thanks for the tip! Been loving this camera but I have to agree with the auto exposure issues
not even looking to buy it, but watched anyway...true fan.
Nour Aljowaily Same 😂😂
Nice review. Cool personality, seem like a chill person! Enjoy Belize... I'm going to Miami in a few days (next best choice? lol)
this was SO HELPFUL!!!!! I really want to buy a vlog camera once I get a little bigger of a following and I will definitely refer to this video when Im looking for a vlog camera!!
hi there! nice video and Vlog! i subscribed and like it! Peace from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia!
Exposure. I always run the Sony´s with Lv1 and back it down with exposure at -0,7. Then it will not blow the highs and still do not crush the shadows. I always runt with this settings.
The 'Art of Photography' Ted has done some interesting stuff with his Sony RX100 V with external audio recorders etc.
Love the camera! Thanks for the tip, Sara!
Btw, why choose the Sony batteries compared to the Wasabi ones? Did you notice that the Sony batteries held better charges than the 3rd party ones?
This was super helpful! I believe if you turn the dial on the lens it adjusts the exposure...don't quote me on that though I' not 100% sure!
Great comments and review! Thank-you!
Infectious personality, could definitely learn a thing or two off you! Subscribed.
If you're not happy with where the auto exposure exposes the picture, that's what exposure compensation is for.
Comprehensive vid :) can't wait for the Belize vlogs!
Any opinion on the 4 vs the 5? There's about a $300 difference and I heard that the 4 isn't that different.
Thanks for that. We making daily videos now and mostly we should with the 7S and 5100! We thinking about buying the RX for vlogging!
What's your thought on the Sony a6500? Love to hear your thoughts and opinion.
If you are looking for a camera that will shoot videos of scenes that must be crisp and greater quality than a pocket Vloggong camera, go for the 5000, though it is an older model and probably not as feature dense as the newer models.
try spotmetering. It will set exposure on your face (if it's in the middle) or use exposure compensation
Sony rx100 mark 5 is amazing. Thanks for the review. I appreciate it.
I have the rx100m5 and I use third party battery every day. They just work as the original one.
Uhhhmmmm, About the Batteries. I bought some generic batteries from Amazon and they work fine and they were real cheap. The brand is Powerextra, (replaces NP-BX1).
Good review, didn't know about the downsides. I subscribed. Cheers.
I like how fast it focused when you put the battery up to the cam and away

So you owned the RX100 III Before? Would be great if you could tell me, if theres a difference in sound quality from the Mark III to the Mark V. :)
Great Vlogs, keep going, and greetings from Germany!

super video. how did you record it, which camera used for recording? handycam ? or dslr or mobile or what... crystal clear.
Hi Sara, how long can you take video in 1080p before the camera overheats? Thanks and keep up the wonderful videos.
That is a great vid, thanks for the info..
Mine's arriving in a few days, can't wait hah.
Tascam DR-10L with Rode Videomicro...you have to sync audio in post but its easy and really rocks...IMHO
This was so useful. I have been debating between the IV or the V. I would be annoyed if the VI came out with an external mic after buying one of these haha :)
Thanks for this! Just bought an RX100 and so keen to VeeLog on it! :D
Use the built in ND filter to fix the over exposing issue.
Adorable. Great tips and overview. Thanks for your awesomeness!
ciao Sara remember that during the winter and at low temperatures near 0 degrees(c) lipo batteries have a reduction of total capacity hi from Italy
Great video! Just got this camera now! Hit Like! How do you record in 60fps?
Thanks Sara, I've been look to pick up an RX100 mkv for vlog-ish stuff and it's good to know what I'm getting into.
Excellent camera. BTW, there are ways to get good quality audio (external mic) with this camera.
You should do a review of the Canon G7Z Mark 2--- I feel like I'm not using it as well as I should
Center metering for auto exposure? You seem to be in the middle of the frame, so it'll expose for you. You can also try point metering.
