Jeenyoux I feel the same way! I thought it was VERY POWERFUL!!! Well articulated too. This is the first interview that I’ve come to see a really different person in him than before. It’s like he’s free of something? Ive always known he’s intelligent , I realize he’s been to therapy but it’s deeper than that? 🤔🤔🤔
How you know Jay is a truly empathetic & caring man was how he said ''let's not use hurricane cause so many are affected'' he was using a metaphor and realised it might be in bad taste or cause others pain and switched to a word that would describe what he was talking about but equally thoughtful of those affected by hurricanes by choosing the word 'pain'. What an absolute gentleman.
It’s pretty refreshing to see an interview we’re the interviewer wasn’t trying to box the interviewee in a corner and genuinely wanted to see what was going on in their mind.
It's crazy how the media tries to put artists against each other when behind the scenes it's really all love. JayZ mentioned his love for Kanye, respect for Nas, him going to therapy with Beyoncé and for himself, his love for Solange album and for her. These people are human. They fight, argue etc but at the end of the day it's all love.

Jay-Z always amazes me. He has such profound wisdom. They say "wisdom is born of pain" and I think that it true. I love the way he speaks of his marital issues and his obviously strong love for Beyonce. They are in it for the long haul, and that is so refreshing.
@captain_ahab I know this is months old, but.... Kenyan runners is due to high altitude. Higher altitude, less oxygen to take it. When they come to other areas, they don't need as much oxygen to take in compared to others. Therefore, they can last longer and push their bodies harder. So, in a way, yeah you can call that evolution-ish. But that's more of growing accustomed to your environment. The Asian thing isn't even accurate though. That's just basic genetics. @Davide Lecky People like to think they are good. Its hard to look at someone going through pain and realize that you were the person who caused it. You have to own the person you are and the wrong things you did in order to change yourself for the better. Many people just walk away from their marriages and focus on the wrongs the other person did, rather than see the bad in themselves.
This guy is BRILLIANT and so incredibly self aware. Wisdom beyond his years! Very thought provoking and inspiring. Would like to hear more from him to help heal this world.
I never ever understood "what are you looking at" until now. I always thought it was just a way of asserting and showing power or influence by inciting fear in others. I never saw it through the lens of "this person is looking at me in my time of pain or vulnerability" or "this person can see or recognize my pain or vulnerability...and I don't like that". That's very powerful and very true. Also, "intelligence is not a tribute to color" in reference to "you're talking white"-everything. And also "the hardest thing is seeing pain on someone's face that you caused and then have to deal with yourself...most people don't want to do that. You don't want to look inside of yourself, and so you walk away". I'm very glad to have watched this interview and see him in this light. Not just as a celebrity with money, and influence, and Bey, and a black man, but as a human. I still can't fully put into words all that I've taken from this, because I'm still processing it-and I think that that is a good thing to continue thinking about it and then having a conversation about it and continuing the dialogue- but I'm very happy to have seen this.
I think that that contributes to that thought process. If you think about it, someone showing you that they are unwilling to open up and are uncomfortable doing so or being vulnerable with you (or society) and expressing that in a way that can be threatening or hostile would lead anyone to deter from trying to figure that individual out you know? And even if it isn't in a threatening manner, just the fact that someone is showing or communicating (even if not explicitly or just through body language) that they aren't comfortable to be vulnerable and are unwilling to do so, I'd say most people would be considerate of that individual and respect that boundary so then, of course people don't understand or relate or see your humanity you know? Because that's not even an option yea? It's not even on the table. So then that yields to many people, especially black men, being misunderstood or judged or regarded as inept of having, or at least expressing, human emotion, therefore the rest of society can't connect, so again as you've said, that translates to society not recognizing your humanity.
Yes, this was a very powerful interview. Jay-Z has always had a stillness about him. However, in this interview I can see that his guard is fully down and he's speaking from a vulnerable/deeper place himself. The 'What are you looking at' comment touched me as well. Considering that my brother was 'that person' asking people that question, I'm excited to discuss with him exactly what he was going through at that time. Nevertheless, you've highlighted most of the points that really resonated with me...I'm interested to know if you felt he was 100% honest...still so much to unpack from this interview.
You say "excited to discuss with him", does that mean that you will be interviewing him soon? How neat. And to answer your question about his honesty, I actually like to watch and listen to interviews multiple times so that I can get a read (through facial expression, body language, on whether or not someone is being completely genuine or honest in their responses, even if I think it's only part of the truth because they aren't as willing to share the complete truth-and I feel as though he was completely honest in this interview. Though I believe that he held some things back, I feel as though everything that he did say and share was with full honesty because, like you said, he was speaking from a vulnerable/deeper place in himself. It's also just very pleasant to take in all of what he has given to us in this interview, not only because the information is helpful and relatable, but because he's never really been a guy to speak so much or go into detail about so many facets of his life. He's usually quite mum about the inner workings of his personal life, except that glimpse and perspective that he gives through his music, so it's just nice to see him more as another person rather than this mysterious and private celebrity that everyone wonders about or puts on a pedestal or no one can relate to.
"You talking white....What does that mean??....I know words???!?!...Intelligence doesnt contribute to color.... THIS IS WHY I LOVE ME SOME JAY-Z...this dude is BRILLIANT....
Or how many times as a Chicano people would tell me, "Why you act like that, you're white washed", why? Because I picked up a dictionary? Racism against your own is better for racist than them doing it directly.
The word English comes from end combination "Anglo-ish". Look up the word "Anglo" it most definitely symbolizes color. I guess all y'all "smart people" don't pick up the dictionary enough.
Man, this interview is deep, informative and insightful. Both of these guys are so seasoned with wisdom. Jay-z is very humble and insightful. His words of wisdom is as touching as the words in his songs. I think Jay is a great role model for men!
Be...Be Blessed and Know...You are Phenomenal and You don't owe anyone an apology...AAAmen! Be Phenomenal in Your right now...anyhow!! AAAmen!! God's Love & Blessings! Meditate on the Book of Genesis
This man is in total peace with himself. You can feel it in his tone of voice and body language. Jay Z is becoming one or my role models and I'm not precisely a young person.
Powerful messages and responses there by Jay. He’s in a league of his own. And a big credit to the interviewer. You can tell he’s studied him throughout his journey.
Yes!!! Instead of women saying “ what you’re looking at” to hide they’re pain we say “ I look better than you or my clothes cost more than hers” to hide our pain. I know because I was that woman! I couldn’t connect with other women because I didn’t know me. I thought my STUFF defined me as a person. It took a lot of self evaluation, God, friends(my front row), and honesty for me to realize where the disconnect stemmed from. After weeks of crying and praying I’m now at a place of peace!
@@k.cooper2569 HE didn’t tho. You the only one that brought up race. And both the dudes u mentioned are white. Billy Joel and Adam Lambert are pretty well spoken yes but Jay Z is a rapper. Nothing about being black but being a rapper from Brooklyn. He shouldn’t be able to yet he does.
I loved at the end when he used the analogy of “eye of the hurricane” and then went back and said “maybe I won’t use the term hurricane because so many people affected”. Pure class
He hit the nail on the head. Compassion. If people don’t waste time trying to show toughness but turn that energy into understanding just imagine what this world would be.
This is how real change happens. Having understanding, agreement & unity. This is a message , hear it, understand it , move on it. Great interview Dean & Jay.
2022 and still one of the most intelligent interview from a hip hop artist " … The hardest thing to do is seeing pain on someone's face that you've cause and have to deal with it yourself..."
This conversation is so rich with emotion, seeing the conflict in jays eyes when he analyzes the questions and how he answers them you can just tell how differently he thinks and makes each answer and question very genuine great interview
I love his ideology of playing the long game. In a world of so much short term gratification, its so hard to stay patient. But if you stay patient and work hard enough on a long term basis. You will win.
This guy (Jay Z) may have come from the projects but is a person with the right stuff to grow. This insight into him is fascinating. It shows in a tacit way that growing as a person does not have to do with formal education or money.
Such a great interview. The interviewer did a fabulous job with the questions he chose and his authentic interest and engagement, showing Jay Z in all his beautiful wisdom and down to earth realness. One of the best interviews ever.
This what jay meant wen he said “Show them how to move in a room full of vultures” he walked in, controlled the room, educated and stated facts. Protect Hov at all costs.
Jay Z’s boundaries are stunning. He shares and gives just enough where he illicits change. The way he answered questions and gave answers shows how he is evolving and growing as a person. He is thoughtful and quite brave. To even admit he goes to therapy as a Black man makes me proud. I don’t listen to his music per se but the songs I know about is that his music has a lesson. It’s artistic and speaks to the heart and soul to people.
I'm wondering if he had ever been asked that question in that way. I am glad he was asked. I think that question almost caught him off guard. But I think he gave the best answer that hen could give.
“They’ll be who they are.” I don’t know why, but that quote really got me. We get so caught up on changing people and not seeing them as they really are
The demeanor of Jay Z is the polar opposite of Kanye, but the messages aren't all that different. When you can figure out what kanye is trying to say, that is.
Jay z's level of consciousness and intelligence is immerse. There's always some knowledge to tap from his interviews. His delivery, his articulation is what I admire the most, not forgetting his confidence level. We are blessed to have him still here. Tbvh
Detox 2k I believe it means that we as ppl don't want to look at ourselves face to face and accept the mistakes we have made and the person we have become. We always tend to ignore our own situations/problems and just sweep them under the rug and walk away. Atleast this is what i think when i hear those words.
Jay-Z and Beyonce will never do a interview with the breakfast Club again. Because they know how immature and disrepectfull the Breakfast Club is. This interview is matured
As someone that's always been skeptical of this man, and this being my first Jay-Z interview, I can say that I'm surprised at the self awareness and I can appreciate him much more as an artist and visionary. We need more of this
@@danofficial117black people are mad jayz talks about what other rappers dream about, and it hurts so bad cos they know with Jayz his raps are facts unlike their favourites
I watched this when it first came out. And now, four years later, I'm realizing that there were so many layers to his words that I didn't catch the first go around. Can't wait to, God willing, listen to this again five years from now.
This is my first time re-watching, I'm halfway through the interview and I'm picking up new information that I didn't catch when this was first uploaded. I wonder what I'll discover the next time watching too. ❤
This is documenting at it's finest! Fifty years from now when we look back at this, what will the conversation consist of? Salute to Jay-Z and keep inspiring.
You know it's good content when 35 mins feels like 5 mins. I'd love to have a conversation with Jay Z about life one day. He and people who think alike, are the kind of people to have deep conversations about, the kinds that most would shy away from out of ignorance or fear. We sometimes forget to listen, understand, and resolve ( in that order). I'm almost 22 and am just starting my journey in this thing called life. It's not easy but at least I'm taking the courage and ambition to start it. Very great interview.
What a terrific interview. Jay-Z is so provocative in such a positive way- so thoughtful and so constructive, practical, actionable. And good for Dean Baquet- he did a great job.
Fabulous interview..great questions..and I love how open Jayzee was..I've never heard him speak this long or be this honest and open about his life. So glad I stumbled upon this. I never had an opinion on Jayzee one way or the other. Now, I can say I'm truly impressed. He seems genuine , giving and unpretentious.. Amazed at how different he is than the image I had of him, given the way he and Bey present themselves in public. Thanks for a great video.
I'm really impressed by Jay-Z words. Such an intelligent, humble and authentic man. Teaching your children to be empathetic and making yourself vulnerable... I'm inspired. Indeed the most beautiful things are not objects but inside.
I, I no way am one of those people that put Jay Z in this ultimate pedestal, but you gotta give it to him and the journalist for the QUALITY of the conversation here. Tons of mature introspection and insight. I think the most commendable part of the entire interview is the fact that this couple, under soo much public scrutiny and outside influence CHOSE to work THROUGH their challenges in such a remarkable way. I'm by far a romantic, but to use a common passion and craft and sit there as your partner spills her heart and soul in so much pain that you had caused. Wow! Certainly a level of mutual respect and commitment to the family unit that is missing in America today. My hats off to the Carter family
“You can’t have a solution until u start dealing with the problem. What u reveal you heal.” My god I felt that too much. Sometimes stuff happen but however it happened, it’s time to deal w it and fix it. Thanks Mr. Carter 🙏🏽❤️
Thank you Sun Sun for pointing this out and reminding us one of the best part of the interview: “You can’t have a solution until u start dealing with the problem. What u reveal you heal.”
Respect, respect, respect. I pray I find someone just as wise. I love everything about this interview. Thank you Jay Z. For your knowledge & your love for life. ♥️
Wow, some really powerful statements made here. I’ve passively listened to Jay Z in the past, but this interview really made me a big fan of him. So much respect.
Everyone going on about him crossing his legs. You fools ain’t realised he’s just mirroring the interviewer. To make someone feel comfortable you mirror their body language.
One thing I noticed that I feel we tend to forget is even tho most of us look at Jay Z is as the big dog or OG, he still grew up right before our eyes even when he was considered this. Maturing in ways that we couldn't even pin point until now Kudos to the man💪🏼
This was not an interview with Jay-Z, it was an interview with Shawn Carter. Loved it!

A healthy relationship with anyone starts with conversation
Notes I took on this interview:
-Important to show where you came from, what it took to get here
-The best things are invisible, I cant put compassion in your hands
-Repeat what those who are successful do, those habits made them what they are
-Have the uncomfortable dialogue (on racist business owners getting kicked out of the NBA)
-Concealing an issue doesnt get rid of it, you need to diagnose the problem first and that doesnt happen until you talk about it
-Most important thing learnt in therapy: Every emotion is connected and it comes from somewhere- "you're acting this way towards me because of this? Im gonna respond with compassion because that thing happened to you."
-You can only do the best that you can do and you should be proud of yourself for that- and also recognise when other people do their best
-These objects are not the most beautiful things I have, its the friendships, the compassion and the person I have become
-Rap is discovery, what do you know thats new? Thats whats cool
-Do you wanna be a trend or louis vuitton?
-Doing a bad thing whilst being fully conscious of its effects is worse than doing a bad thing when you are ignorant of the consequences

Omri H some people can see it bro no need explain it to them buddy
don’t make it seem like walking out of a marriage is cowardice. it may be selfish but many good decisions are made by being selfish.
A lesson I've learned. Lost the most wonderful woman ever, because I couldn't face myself.
joegrst Me to!!!!!
Kennae M can i subscribe
Exactly. Well said. Thank you for this conversation. Really enlightening.

This is pure Black Boy Joy right here. Two Black men coming together having a mature and positive intellectual conversation.
