  • Racing solo can be tough. In this video I point out some good cycling tips for criterium road racing tactics for someone who is racing solo. A crit race is a fast 40min-75min race. This video is of my athlete Kyle who races both on a team and solo at times. In this race, he is solo and does well to make sure he has the best shot at winning. This race was part of an omnium so a good result on day one was important.
    The main thing when racing solo is finding that balance between racing aggressively and conservatively. If a lot of solo moves go, it is sometimes best to just let them go and allow the field to bring them back. If multiple riders, especially from the teams that are represented, you should be looking to sneak into that.
    Riding at the front is also key. It can be challenging to stay toward the front. Sometimes you have to eat a little wind to stay in the top part of the race. However, this will allow you to also be ready for any threatening moves that go off the front.
    Lastly, learning to read the field is huge. At about the halfway mark of a race, you can get a pretty good understanding if a break will stick or not. If you think a field sprint will definitely happen, you should switch tactics to just sitting in a conserving for the sprint. Most people burn up their matches before the sprint, especially in the Cat 4/5 fields. Join me as I breakdown this Cat 3 criterium.

    Great commentary! I'm wondering why other racers with a presence on RUclips don't do this type of breakdown (I mean, with clear strategies and the do's and don't during a crit). I think if we get more videos like this, races can be safer, faster, and more competitive.

      So I remember when Tyler, The VC started the race breakdowns. He kind of was one of the first and then NorCal cycling jumped onboard as his primary style for his channel. Then trainerroad jumped on the train as well. If you back to some of Tyler’s first race breakdowns, he and I actually commented on them together. I agree though, would be cool if more people did this. I also don’t mind getting others people footage and going over them for all to learn from. If you have any videos, would love for you to send them my way.

    While track or cycling I've always known i was a dragster motor or - ‘1-run’ horse. Unlike you punching over and over again. Yet i have never been in a final sprint. 3 reasons beyond when your new and get dropped learning. 1 - Many courses around here end on a climb (85kg). 2 -Many courses around here are too hilly for me and i burnt up. 3 - You spoke of cut off point for attacking... i had this thing where i couldn't help taking a shot with 1L to go (

      You can work on your sprint. It takes times. I’d also suggest maybe looking into more Vo2 or anaerobic work. This will help for the end of Crit races.

    There isn’t a huge community… so I’m traveling 4 hours to get dropped…. And it’s not fun even though the views and overall experience is fun. If I lived closer I could identify the teams or riders who participate in group rides

      I hate garmin virb software. It’s pretty tough to sync power data with the gps sometimes. I do know Kyle has some weird power dropouts and spikes from time to time. One race he had his power meter reading zero for the first 30mins before it started working.

    The guy in the orange/knee warmers never had any motivation to work in a group, was acting like he was just covering moves.....appears he took 2nd in field sprint.... so as the race goes on notice who is working and who is not, and WHY.

    What is Kyles ftp? What we're his avg and np for this race?

    • @ChazTurmon
      @ChazTurmon  4 года назад +1

      He’s around 320w FTP right now. He had a 240Avg and 298NP. Aggressive racing but still pretty conservative.
