I bought one a few months ago, and then didn’t use it much. I recently needed to reattach an 88 key weighted keyboard to its pedestal - which involved laying on my back and holding the driver up over my head, in the dark, to reinstall a bunch of screws. I happened to have that driver a few steps away - so into the Charge it went, and those screws went in very quickly despite my awkward position. At that moment, I was glad I bought it.

Thanks for sharing, here is my take on that: I'm one of those guys who use their Leatherman Surge a lot. The practicality it offers and the time you save while you're working on something are priceless. I'm also planning to get the 711L Ratchet for very similar reasons. Concerning the "Side tool left in the drawer": Spending 30$ on an accessory that vastly improves the performance a multi-tool makes as much sense as spending 150+$ on a multi-tool under the condition you actually use it. If you leave the multi-tool in your drawer, that means you don't use it. If you don't use, why the hell did you get it and spend a "huge" amount of money on it in the first place? Same thing applies to this accessory. Many do consider a multi-tool so sort of a mere "back up" tool, but to professional and non-professionals that's THE TOOL that can make a huge difference (From making you life way easier to allowing to survive). This is exactly why, given that you actually NEED a multi-tool, you shouldn't be buying a cheap 5-25$ piece of junk, but get the 90-150+ $ and its accessories. You may not need to use it for a very long time, but when you'll need it, your being cheap will come at a cost (Either a broken tool or a tool that can't do what you need it to do. P.s.: Do you think 2 years of warranty is little to nothing? Put that into perspective: You can waste it in 10 secs while abusing it. Now tell me if that is still "too litle to you".
My surge is only 2 weeks old haven’t actually used it yet I got it mainly because I commute on a bike and basically was looking for something light to carry in my bike tool kit to make quick fixes between work and home the ratchet feature would make any adjustments twice as fast with less turns it would be a big help at work as well
I love it. I use it often and it works great. I have the surge and it's never came out while using it. I have the extention tool and the bit kit to and I can really extend the driver when I have those hard to reach spots. Carrying my leatherman with the accessories saves a lot of space in my edc carry vs a ratchet set.
With the Leatherman ratchet and bit kit I have stopped carrying a 6-1 screwdriver and a ton of bits and nut drivers. I EDC a Surge along with the DeWalt double end 1/4" sockets and one driver shaft, that give me 4 sockets 7/16-1/4 along with 40 plus bits I carry a separate flashlight. This set I use at work on a large federal complex daily and as a volunteer fireman. I have used it on several calls one being a dog that under sun room hiding next to the AC duct, I was able to disassemble the floor register and the million or so 1/4 hex sheet metal screws and the hose clamp around the flex duct. The ratchet made it a lot easier in tight spaces. While not for everyone it yeah is about $10.00 more then I would have liked to have paid but it has paid for it self in the 3 months I have carried it. A lot of people dis on the Leatherman flat bits try carrying 40 single bits on yourself daily.
Is it the best. Hardly. However, I’ve been using it more and more with my Signal. It’s very useful. Hanging pictures with anchors, switching out doorknobs. All I need is my Signal and ratchet attachment.
I just had to get one after picking up a Wave recently and getting the bit kit for free from Leatherman. I like it but you have some GREAT points. I was hesitant to purchase due to price myself. I think the $18 range would be way more fair.
All good points. I used to go out and inspect electronic equipment. Always had a leatherman and it got me into stuck cabinets and cases on the regular. This would have been handy then. With a mini set of torx bits it would be good for knife maintenance.
i carry the leatherman supertool every day. it does most all i need. but i wouldnt mind seeing them make a ratchet attachment for it. that being said, i really like that leatherman is now featuring tool accessory sets. and i appreciate your honest reviews.

I switched to the tiny Knipex cobra, a little multi bit screwdriver and a good pocket knife. I can't do everything I can do with a leatherman but I seldom used anything but the pliers, screwdriver and knife on my leatherman anyway. The tools I have now outperform it by far at the tasks they were designed for. If you haven't tried the Knipex pliers give them a try, they are awesome.
Knipex cobra and pliers wrench are awesome tools very durable, work hard push hard never broke.. Leatherman multitools is good tools, but pliers it's self not strong as knipex did. If you push hard will broke 2 piece

But, im not sure how much i need it, at least when looking at price. Im not sure how much i would use it, maybe i use it often Vs getting dedicated tool, i guess leatherman could function fine as a rench on some things depending on strengt. Find it to pricy to just have it as backup. The years i used multitool, screwdriver is not a tool i use often. And, when i used it the bit has broken every time. Might add, screw has been oversized. Still, not sure how good quality is. Suspecting leatherman bits metal is hard, but just a tad brittle. So, i think perhaps a diy or knockoff is a better path. Time will tell.. How strong is the bit holder on a leatherman? Anyone blown the holder, or tested it to its limit? Tnx for replie. :) One thing i find stupid, leatherman should include bit that fits on the screws they use with tti. Not sure if you get it in dedicated set. It seems, leathermans idea is. You can fix allot of things with tti set, but screw you if you just wanna titen up the screw on a leatherman. Just a detail, not important nor do i care. But, i would include a bit that would fit the security torx leatherman use in a set or what comes with the charge tti. Have no idea what comes with other charge.
Hmm...so I have the Skeletool CX. Like it, lots. Bought the sheath with pocket and the extra bit card so now I'm back up to where maybe I should just use my Wave+ or get a new Surge or Signal since I've gone back to a belt carry. The Skeletool is/was just ok to EDC alone in my pocket. Sometimes it was a little heavy so it gets tossed into the truck console. So if I need it I can grab from there....But wait, if I'm back at the truck the I can just grab the EXACT tool I need from the toolbox. Decisions! Thanks for the video! (Yes, I agree on the $30 bucks being a little steep)
Bit holders in all three tools is are exactly the same dimensions, black holds it better because of the coating and it's bit tighter. For me this extender it totally waste of money, it's to thick and bits go to deep. For me - useless.
It was one of the best purchases I’ve made, mines holds pretty solid, liked it so much I bought one for my son that’s an IT specialist and he loves it.
Do all Leatherman models come with the necessary attachment for the extender? Or does the Extender adapter included with the Extender tool and one needs to add to the Leatherman model. Some assembly required? Glad you included the Leatherman Charge ratchet as a comparison.
The ratchet or the extender are sold independent. Prices are higher in Europe then prices in US. The socket for extender or ratchet is common in most Leatherman (big) tools. It comes with a dual bit, phillips and flat. In Skeletool you get another dual flat bit. The extender tool is useless, it is too thick to access deep screws. The ratchet is good but you can live without it. Instead of buying a cheaper Leatherman and the ratchet better buy a Surge. You can buy separate saw blade for it. Instead of ratchet or extender tool better buy the Bit Kit, if you cant afford both.
@@randomescu Thanks for the info. I prefer the Gerber Center Drive for a multi tool and bit driver. However, the Center Drive is very expensive. The multiple Leatherman multi tools are attractive from a cost perspective. I liked the option Aaron showed with the Leatherman Charge.

Maybe don't use it like a damn fleshlight 🤷♂️ You had to shake it relatively hard to get it to pop out of the wave. If it stays in the tool just fine under normal use, then it really isn't an issue. I do agree the price is a bit high, and would be more appealing around $20, but in the world we're in, everything is getting more expensive. You can't compare the price of something today to what it should have been 10 years ago. Overall, it's not a necessity, but can be a fairly valuable convenience.
Use a tool to tighten the bit holder (the thin metal retainer) on your Leatherman tools and then the ratchet will fit tightly. 😏 Nothing wrong with tools made in Taiwan, lots of quality tools are made there.
I have the surge with the extension then I saw this one I’m here just to see how this one performs before buying because the price is a bit steep I would have paid 20 for this and ten for the standard extension I keep checking eBay hoping I’d come across this one used lightly and cheaper than new
Did Leatherman invent this? I'm trying to find any other versions of this ratcheting hex bit adapter, but nobody else seems to be making this tool, neither before nor after Leatherman. Seriously? Hats off to Learherman, I guess.
Aaron that was an awesome review. I have a 20 year old wave that has treated me great. I just dropped a G-d awful amount of the new ARC and was considering getting the leatherman ratcheting extension. But I don’t like the fact that it can fall out and it is expensive. Worse it has only a 3 year warranty. And the final blow made in Taiwan. Instead I went with the 711 2 in 1 hex bit & socket extension for $$9 bucks and change. It doesn’t ratchet but it doesn’t cost an arm & a leg.

One thing i find stupid, leatherman should include bit that fits on the screws they use with tti.
@gideontactical What would be a price range that would increase the “value” of this product? How much would you be willing to pay for USA made?
If you belt carry, you carry the most competent and functional tool
I'd carry a Surge if you're gonna belt carry
WHAT IS THE EDC FLASHLIGHT BRAND?
I just got the bit extension, a little bit cheaper, and you can be sure it's not going to break as there's nothing to break.
Right on I prefer the non ratchet version
I got one, carry it with my edc leatherman. The transition from left to right is a bit sticky. Maybe for retention it could’ve been magnetic?
no because LM is a cheapskate
Go to Leatherman and search which tools come with the bit socket. There are both large and medium tools that have it.
I’ll tell you what, I’m going to pass on this and wait for the leatherman taser accessory to come out. Taser Deployed !!!
How do you like the G10? That ratchet driver sucks for 30 dollars, lots of others out there that have better builds for less.
mine is allready broken :( without using too much force, but the friction now is fucked, you know an alternative to buy? Also without the "flat" end to fit in the letherman (i can easily grind it )
I have the non ratchet version. $20 I think on Amazon
I bought one had a friend print a knob for it on a 3d printer it has become my goto screwdriver for edc and house tasks
I had 2 Leathermans through the years and for the money that i spend didint perform well at all. The bits broke very easily , the ergos were not comfort . I purchsed a True Utility for 1/3 of the price , this is my EDC for 2 years now and i m a happy user. I wont spent a dollar for Leatherman any more.
Worth 300$ now 😅😂😂
Should of been a magnetic adapter maybe thanks Aaron enjoy your day with your family and god bless
Is the ratchet discontinued or will leatgerman sell it again?
A 2 year warranty is pretty solid, because all other accessories because the high end leather sheath do not have any warranty.
Leather has raised there price on everything and I never shake my tool like that when I use it thanks
You make some great points, and I think we are on the same page with this. I picked one up, but for the price this device doesn’t really get me any more functionality than the OG bit extender, or the little ratchet set I picked up from the hardware store for $12.
Stop complaining Leatherman makes the best multi-tools in the world 🌎
@@patrickgambsky6290 Multi tools are good at everything but just ok at one thing. All of them are. Even Leatherman's. Standalone screwdriver beats this any day
@@patrickgambsky6290 Their quality control is bad
They rust fast and often (my rebar rusted with minimal water contact and Im not in a humid place)
Victorinox makes the best MTs
For EDC swiss army knives cant be beat
For work they make some plier based models too which are miles above LM
I have a mini Rachet handle with the extender, works much better
I agree with what you said in the review. I appreciate your honest opinion.
Why would you flick around your Leatherman?
This has been out for quite some time and I still refuse to purchase a Taiwan made $30 ratchet bit driver.
I'll buy 3 if LM ever decide to make it in USA
Compared with the bit kit is a waste. If one can afford an expansive Leatherman probably will buy both.
Nice flashlight on the side pouch!
so you can't drive a screw while riding a moving horse, atv, side by side, or bull riding
Love my GRIP6 belt! Wearing right now. Works great with holsters and is super lightweight.
Awesome!!! Glad you like it as much as I do.
Damn man wtf
So fails 2 out 3. Excessive cost. Really seems a bit of a failure
I see what you did there, "a bit of a failure" 😂
😏 Nothing wrong with tools made in Taiwan, lots of quality tools are made there.
good review, thx.
If it falls out when you do that, don’t do that!
Tries to shake it loose out of camera shot and removes it puts it back in to make it fall out.
Stop hahaha i love your content and watch alot of your videos but the flick itself out thing had me laughing.
Whats up with that destroy shirt
An LAPG shirt I love
@@gideonstactical thanks
@@gideonstactical its a good shirt
I agree with you. Too pricey
I have to ask; where were you hiking?!? I can't put my finger on it. Thanks!
