Hi Prof! The inverter was a good idea. I think the issue with using an old battery is that the electrodes inside the older batteries (probably zinc and copper) have been doing their thing for a while now and the whole process of electrons moving between the electrode plates in a gel or a sulfur bath eventually wear away the electrodes to where they are pitted and oxidized. So you never get the full current even if it measures 12 V. Eventually, it won't take a full charge. I think the battery chargers won't help because they aren't really power sources like your bench supply. They ramp up the charge so as not to explode the batteries from charging too fast.

Also its pretty easy to run one of these with NO Computer controller. If do not want to use the Drip IV method for fuel delivery u can just make a 555 timer circuit with a Mosfet or Transistor at the output to drive the fuel metering pump . Could even add a 4017 Counter chip if wanted to control even more & slow the pulses down.

Some of these Chinese diesel heaters come with a dedicated power supply for indoor use.
Probably the pump fail in the first one, that’s the bit that does the annoying clicking.
Once primed and running these machines use very little electrical power to keep running.
I noticed your diesel didn’t look too clean, so that might be an issue.

@@ProfSimonHolland I hope you do. I rely on one of those while out on the road. Even some diesel mechanics treat these things as magical black boxes, and complain about how tricky they are just to install. This one from Vevor certainly simplifies installation! Anyway, it sure would be helpful to know what goes wrong, and how to recover. So far, all I know is they need to run at operating temperature for a minimum time in order to clean up the soot filter. If the heater cycles on and off too frequently, the soot filter builds up until it's clogged and can't run.

How do they know what went wrong if you dont send it back ? .. so do a teardown video and fix it :) Cold batteries have less capacity... The 80Ah isn't the amount of current it can deliver, its the capacity ... so it can deliver 40 amps during 2 hours or 8 amps during 10 hours etc. But it says nothing about how many amps it can deliver at a certain time, however a car battery is supposed to be able to turn a starter motor over so you expect it can deliver a large current. The batterie probably can deliver enough current, but the voltage will probably drop a lot which the heater doesnt like. A switched power supply will keep the voltage at 12v. Maybe you are better off putting the car batteries in series .. so then you probably have a voltage drop where the voltage stays over 12volts heh

The operational or working Amps of a battery is its horse power and cranking Amps are the Nm of force it can exert in electrons all at once. Like engines, batteries loose their grunt force over time even whilst still being able to run. This becomes especially important in replacing your car battery. I will always opt for a larger cranking Amp rating over OEM specs. Say the mfg. recommends 750 cold crank Amps, I'm going to instal a 1000A cold crank battery instead. This much better combats degerdation over time and the effects of winter cold.
