- Review of the Roland VAD 706, after having it three months here’s what I think of it.
I'm based in the Philippines and I sourced the kit on order from Yupangco Music
www.yupangco.com
@YUPANGCOMUSIC
and the additional accessories were from Audiophile
audiophile.ph
I love mine too. Don't listen to the whiners who put down this kit because of the price. They just want to bitch and find fault in your purchase. I only play indoors and this works great for me. I wanted the absolute best and this is it. All the missing components I already owned from a previous electronic kit. An interesting note, I use the electronics module as a passthrough. I do all my listening and editing by USB cable to my MacBook using GarageBand and Superior Drummer 3. It would be great if the module could produce those kinds of sounds but let's get real. It's no a DAW, it's an e-kit.
There will always be whiners about anything no matter how good it is. I find this kit suitable for my needs, I can play at home, don’t disturb neighbours or family and it looks decent. So many electronic kits look like rubber frisbees on metal stands and I wouldn’t want it on display. Thanks for the tip about running it through my MacBook, I’ll give it a try, I’m sure it sounds amazing.
Great review Thank you
Very welcome
Its an awesome kit ...but a very expensive kit . However U can get a high end acoustic kit with extra cymbals with boom stands n clamps + get really high end set of mikes with cables n stands (as in like a 7 set ) + build a sound proof room for much lesser than the price of the kit. But yeah.. each to their own. Just putting it out there .
True, but our house has open plan design and didn’t want to build a soundproof room. This was ideal for home playing in my setup.
@@AlvieraLiving .. then its just right for you . Its a lovely kit. So so versatile. Have fun rocking out on it.
@@AlvieraLiving no, you cannot build a soundproof room and setup for the same cost as this kit. There's a hell of a big difference between sound resistant and sound proof. And a high-end acoustic setup is going to be equivalent (or more) in price as well. Sure, you can buy a LOW end kit, setup a butt load of cabling, and low-end mics. I mean, jeez, you buy some high-end mics alone and you're getting really expensive. Mic sets can range from $250 (garbage) to well over $3,000 all by themselves.
@@pccoder agree, it was around 10k USD in the Philippines. I agree to build a proper soundproof room, get a good high end acoustic kit and mic setup it would cost more.
As many in the past have said, Acoustic/Electronic are 2 different instruments🙂
Great review thanks for taking the time to do it.
I would like to know the setup you used for recording the sound for youtube ? . I would like to think im hearing what you are hearing but not sure. The moving, family situation and new home/living remote (not G7+) I totally get it.
Nothing fancy, to record I used the microphone on my phone that I was making the video with. Audio is coming out of two powered speakers connected to mixing desk with input from the Roland.
Need to turn that beater around. Felt eats up the mesh heads
Get a VAD507. It is a 506 with the 706's hardware and the digital hi hat.
Not the same. The 506 comes with the TD-27 sound module. The 706 comes with TD-50X module. Given that I spent quite a lot of money for the 706, I don't think I will be selling it and trading down to a 507 anytime soon.
@@AlvieraLiving No, it isn't the same module. But the difference between the TD-27 and TD-50x is nothing special. Same snare, same ride, 14" and 16" crashes instead of two 16's, same tom shell sizes, a 2" smaller kick shell with the same pad, same hi hat and same hardware. I understand your defensiveness over this mammoth purchase, and it certainly has some advantages such as maple shells and real paint instead of wrap, but most people would agree the 507 bang for the buck stomps the 706. But in your defense the 507 was just released; at the time you bought this it was the best option. But it isn't the only option anymore and most people can't throw down 8K on a drumset.
@@pdxmetal Bang for buck yes maybe. However, I wanted to get the best I could afford, it's not only for playing but it's in a prominent position in our house so it's also a piece of furniture. The natural wood finish matches our home decor. At the time I purchased 12 months ago, this was the only option that had acoustic looks.
Never thought there's a kit like this that is fully electronic.
It's the only one of its kind I think, I'm sure others will release acoustic looking electronic kits as well, but Roland has always been the leader in the electronic drum technologies. They have cheaper V-Drums that sounds the same with the same TD50KX drum module, but this one just looks fantastic.
It is indeed fantastic. I'm not really a fan of electronic kit but this one is an exception.
@@sefhapita I'd rather have an acoustic kit, but neighbors, family etc think otherwise!
Oh, that makes sense. Haha!
@@sefhapita Come over for a music and magic jam sometime!
Hey man,
Hows the VAD706 working out for you 2 years later? I'm sure you're still happy with the purchase but after using it for so long, any draw backs or things you 'regret' or don't like with the kit?
No regrets, for what it is I love it. Nothing beats an acoustic kit I think, but as something I can setup at home, play anytime without disturbing family or neighbors I love it.
Do you have a video to show how it sounds like without turning on the module? Will like to hear how loud it is
Thanks for the suggestion. I don't have but I will consider making one. I would say it sounds like what hitting a drum stick on a rubber pad would sound like. Although the mesh heads are almost silent, the high hat and cymbals have that dull rubber sound.
@@AlvieraLiving will be great if you can make one simple one when you really play hard vs medium strength. There isn't any on RUclips that I can find to gauge if it'll be too noisy for a side by side apartment
Why doesn't Roland partner with EZDrummer, Addictive Drums, etc for better samples?
As good as vdrums are, don't you miss the dynamics of real acoustics?
Yea, but my neighbours and family would much more appreciate this! I don’t play professionally, and it’s good enough for me to play at home and not disturb anyone plus it looks great for an electronic kit.
@@AlvieraLiving interesting, have you considered marrying into a deaf family and living in rural countryside?
