I thought they did a great job of balancing the satire of the movie industry with Jay's family life. Also Charles Napier as Duke, Jay's boss was hilarious. Still one of my favorite 90s shows.
The family life stuff was worthless, probably why the show failed. His boss and Park Overall? were the best of the supporting characters. HIs kid and parents were dull.
They were right. The Critic was brilliantly funny, especially spoofing Hollywood but audiences never caught on to the weak cast. Thats why they added a Southern girlfriend in Season 2.
