That's a gravity water filter. There are two chambers the top has a ceramic charcoal filter candle which gravity filters into the second holding tank.

Mold is virtually everywhere to some degree. Your stomach acids will help remove or destroy most mold spores from your system. Best to exercise caution and avoid mold in excess.

My advice when you change your filter thoroughly clean the terracotta drinking Pot inside and out.
