    This video is fantastic. Ordered the part from Amazon...I paid $9.84 . I swapped the cable out and my macbook pro laptop works perfectly now. There is one step that is tricky and tedious and you will need some pointy small tweezerz other than that pretty easy and straight forward. Macbook is running perfectly now. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

    great video. My only comment is when you push that gold cable back in place before lowering the tiny hold down clip, that you (1) slow down to 1/4 speed your installation of this cable, which I did, as you had this critical part sped up. I had quite the time until I slowed your video WAYYYY down and saw that (a) the contact end of the gold cable actually is SLID UNDER the black piece and (b) that you used tweezers to assist you in getting the cable to slide into place. After doing so, you then price down they tiny hold down clip or hasp. Thank you! Life saver for me.

    Excellent thank you Sir! I don’t know how a fixed ribbon cable fails but this took care of the question mark folder upon boot up!

    Excellent video! My HD can now live back INSIDE my old ass MBPro where it belongs. Hopefully the cable lasts me til I get a new MBPro soon! I’ve held out since 2012-I can hold out a little longer for the M4s 🤞

      I've got my 2012 and a 2015 MBP. I may get an M4 MBP. We'll see. I do have a M2 Studio but I would like a newer laptop. I'll probably keep my 2012 around because it has an optical drive and firewire. That can be useful for accessing legacy media.

    Rick, hi. You've inspired me to add an SSD to my MBP. I notice you use (and link to) cable for a 13" -- I have the MBP 15-inch, Mid 2012, MacBookPro9,1.
    Is there any difference in installation, and could you add a link to the 15-inch option?
    Also, I note that some of these replacement cables come with attached cable bracket (the piece with the yellow connector)... might save a step but is it wise (one MBP commenter said the bracket was oriented in the wrong direction)?
    Thanks for the clear directions!

    Hi, my MacBook Pro (2009) is no longer working after I tried to test charging a battery at 0% and did NVRAM reset instead of SMC. I put back the battery that was working and got into multiple problems : Mac OS cannot be installed (?), then prohibitory sign when starting, then I reformatted my SSD using recovery mode and then I got the flashing folder screen. Now verbose mode, safe mode are not working and when I restart pressing option key it doesn’t show my SSD (same if I connect SSD with usb adapter ) and it won’t show a USB key if I connect one. It only shows internet recovery. So I was wondering if my sata cable is faulty and the usb plots also. But when I use Disk Utility or Terminal with recovery mode I can see my internal SSD and the USB key plugged, and the same SSD if I plug it on USB port. Does that prove my sata cable is not damaged ( I changed it 6 months ago)?
    Thanks
    Sorry for my bad English

    • @Rickmakes

      If it is off, it's probably fine. It is just best practice to disconnect power so there is no potential of damaging things.

    Thanks Rick, but.. how can I tell if my cable needs to be replaced?

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  2 года назад +1

      It might need to be replaced if the computer becomes unstable. It could be any number of things but these are known to have problems with the cable.

      @@Rickmakes I have a mid 2012 13" macbook pro with 750 GB HHD, which seems to me stable, but became very slow lately, so I got it a SSD and I was wondering if I need to replace the cable and the ram as well to get the best out of it. Do you recommend replacing the cable and the ram?

    Is it possible to mount and read the data from an SSD with a damaged cable through an Ubuntu USB live?

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  3 года назад

      Hard to say. I think you are better off using a USB enclosure. This is one I use a lot: amzn.to/3DOoTqD You can connect that into the Mac and try to boot it or try reading it from another system. I think Ubuntu can read HFS+ formatted drives but I’m not sure about APFS.

      @@Rickmakes thank you for the answer. After some difficulties I could mount the internal SSD and save the data from Ubuntu live USB even if it was apfs formatted. Then at the apple store they told me that the flex cable is damaged, so I was wondering if it is possible

    Not bad, but you had your hands in front of the camera too often 🙄 and/or the part of the computer that you were talking about was completely out of the shot 🙃. And why did you speed up the video during one of the most crucial sections (at abt 3:55), while connecting the small cable?? Have liked a number of your videos, but sorry, this one falls way short of the mark. I'm not surprised some folks have problems with their machines (re: comments below) after attempting this replacement, based only on your video. I'm off to find a better video on how to do this correctly. Viewer beware.

      I appreciate the constructive criticism. It is a lost opportunity when someone tells me a video sucks but doesn't tell me why. Thank you for taking time to comment and I will take this into consideration when filming future videos.
