Interesting, Australia new patrol boat, mine hunter, mine layer, SF mission, as for weapons hellfire missile as VLS? With 6 mini guns, add torpedoes it could be new PT boat like in WW2. Interesting to see Australia response is, very cost effective n operations.
@saltymonke3682 although they could stretch this vessel to add more range, this vessel would have keep up with Navy fleet for protection n landing in shore. This vessel make Arafura waste of money, Aircat should RAN future patrol boat.
@JimmyShields-z2h arafura won't be a waste of money if you compare it with the new Dutch-French-Belgian MCM motherships. This thing has to be stretched so much and practically has to be a new ship and needs a new engine. 2 TEUs for module and no upper deck for flight ops is not going to make it into the future. Better have a proper corvette than OPV
@lancebond2338 why do you need 38 knots of speed for a constabulary and patrol mission? That's not fuel efficient for patrolling the western coast of australia from perth. Even if they slash their speed to 1/3. It's just 3000 nm at most
It’s interesting that he mentions that it’s a ship in its own class. I would’ve considered it perhaps as a sloop? Not in the term of sailing, but in general purpose, as such vessels used to be deployed back during the age of sail.

or CATmoron😂. ps, the air cushion boat is not agile, since it does not have rudders, and if you watch various films on this fantastic vessel you see with your own eyes the enormous difficulties they have in setting a route and entering a port, even the American LCACs have this problem, solved in part by the immense power of the turbines and the directional jet (but with fuel consumption worthy of a Saturn 5 so to speak)
I worked with a team using a four-ship squadron of SJKOLD derivatives for the LCS program. Was told early on that only a larger design like the FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE units would ever be considered. The Eureka design was what we had drafted up….Guess I was not crazy after all. Best part was that we were told that naval combat in the littorals was not a serious consideration and the four-ship squadrons using an Expeditionary Transport as “ mothership” Or squadron leader was impractical.
Got a short tour of Skjold while it was visiting in DC at dock. They were very proud of a ticket they received for excessive speed on Potomac River, even though wake was not an issue in it's surface effects mode ! he he
principle of Surface Effect Ships (SES) A SES is a catamaran borne by the combination of an air cushion between the sidehulls and the buoyancy of the hulls. Fans blow air into the air cushion which are sealed with bow fingers and an inflated stern bag and the resulting cushion pressure lifts the vessel upwards hence reducing the draft and the wetted surface.
@@bsail2440. The SKJOLD a was the basis for a SES design I worked on back in 1998. Damn that is great and glad we were not crazy….But the LCS was a total mess.
This boat would be an excellent addition to any amphibious force. Ferrying supplies, casualties, replacement personnel, and all of the other necessary missions by a boat that can beach is necessary.
Something to insert and extract and supply forces in a non-battle environment. Tasked within an island chain or across a Mediterranean/ Caribbean sea environment where some shooting is very likely to take place.
Greetings from Spain. It would be interesting to have a hovercraft with the configuration of the American LCAC but with larger dimensions and clearance, closer to the Russian Zubr, and to be able to add a container with sensors and weapons according to the needs. Another hovercraft that is stealthy to radar and IR is something that is missing in the "Skjold, Tuuli..." arsenal.
building in the country it ordered is a real good solution ... looking at ukraine, they ordered 2 corvettes from Turkey, but those would come immediatly under fire as soon as they leave the turkish harbor ... building ships in the country itself would skip the step of delivering through dangerous waters
So basically take what the Norwegian Navy has operated and is operating and bring it into a new concept. I like the idea, it gives quite a lot more flexibility, but I do feel it might have a problem in some areas that some of the major of today's customers look at for modern/future naval vessels, but if willing to compromise it should work perfectly fine.
Hat's off to operators who use this tech, but for watercraft 'high speed' is no advantage at all against incoming fire. The enthusiastic sales guy tho, I wanna buy one, and one for the wife in matching easy wash flannel.
7-21 days autonomy with 1000nm range? wtf? speed 50 knots. so it will do 1000nm in 20 hours. it does not need 21 days of autonomy. it will run out of fuel so fast anyway.
@gamingrex2930 yea I mean it's probably better off as an amphibious landing ship or amphibious support ship transportable on an LHD than a patrol boat. Australian army operates LCM, this is more suitable for them. But not RAN.
