  • Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Control Explained segment of Gaming University. Today, we focus on something a bit different. Rather than dive into one of the bigger topics in the Control setting, we will look at one of the most well known Sub Plots.
    There are literally hundreds of Documents littered around the Oldest House that provide backstory, insight into other AWEs, and sometimes an insight into the day to lives of Bureau Agents. The Bureau Book Club is comprised of four individuals including the famous Phillip from the Containment Sector. Before the Hiss Invasion, they were given a Novel called Unless You by J.D. Brooks. The thing that was different with this one is that the book changed based upon who read it. In this video we take a look at what forms this book took as well as what it says about the members of the Book Club.
    Please feel free to have free discussion in the comments section below.

    ... I legitimately never thought of the bookclub as as a meaningful addition to the game. I was viewing it as a way to make the world feel real. Huh. Now I should go back and look for all the details I could have missed.

    I'm over here screaming because when I read through the book club notes I was just laughing at the devs including their hot takes on YA dystopians. The details about Unless You reminded me of Divergent by Veronica Roth and The Defiance Trilogy by C.J. Redwine. Also, DAMN, RIP Samson. @@benilinshingoseth2086 There's not exactly plotholes, but definitely things we still don't understand. Like the relationship between Thomas Zane and Alan Wake, so Alan apparently wrote Zane into existence according to the flashes we see in the AWE Expansion? But he was also always a part of Alan, with the diving suit form being just a role he was playing? But if that's the case, then how did Zane and Zane's wife end up in Cauldron Lake, if they didn't exist until Alan wrote about them? Or are there two Thomas Zanes? The original who went into Cauldron Lake and the Zane Alan wrote up in the events of Alan Wake?

    I think the book club and the reviews that reflect the fate of those that wrote them is one of my favourite subtle bits of lore in the game, that unfortunately hardly anyone ever seems to notice. Although I'm pretty sure Lopez's recordings were originally in the Mold Threshold, but then they were changed to Quarry Site Beta when Expeditions was released as DLC. I could be wrong, it's been a while though. Maybe Remedy is messing with us on a meta level by moving the lore around, lol.
    Speaking of books, I received the Control art book last week and it is incredible. Really goes into detail on the concept and making of the game, as well as lots of great art - a real treat for the fans.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG Well, I am not working on them, just playing with an open mind :) but since Control I have finished first two Metro games, Cyberpunk 2077, and I now sporadically engage in Horizon: Zero Dawn. None of them are so dense with meaning as Control. Though If I had to pick one, I will undoubtedly pick CP2077 for its meta-narrative and extra-narrative layers. It is cool to see how its marketing was focused on "becoming a legend" (like an ultimate power fantasy, sort of perverted hero's journey with the-world-is-yours culmination) but the game itself suggests a much bleaker perspective on these concepts and tries pretty hard to subvert them, though mostly through story only.

    Going through the Dead Letters and seeing this video reminded me of a small peevee I had with the game: you couldn't collect their remains for funeral service. Oh interesting, I parsed it as more of a commentary on people seeing and remembering events the way they subconsciously want to, or only noticing and remembering the things they've been primed to, kind of more of a "Rashomon" deal, or like the proverbial blind men and the elephant, rather than the book actually changing for all of them, but in the world of the FBC that distinction might be purely semantic...
    lol I definitely noticed the "prophetic" aspects tho. The universe really IS all of a piece-Chicken & Egg, etc...

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  2 года назад +1

      The main reason to suspect the books are different is because the genre changes and The Fix is different in each story. But yeah it is crazy. I'm wondering if it is intended to be a prophetic story or a cautionary story. Semantically different and one gives the option to avoid that fate

    Excellent vid. However, and I"m sure someone has pointed this out, Samson is not killed by a battery canister. He's killed by a PPT Capsule ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumatic_tube ). The Bureau uses old tech, and that includes, in lieu of emails, letters sent in capsules through pneumatic tubes. The death happens in the the doorway of the central sorting room, where letters are received from tubes that lead to the senders, and placed into tubes that lead to the intended recipient.

    This is unrelated to the book club specifically, but I didn't know how else to ask this. So I've been going through a lot of your old videos for both Alan Wake and control and I thought of something. forgive me if you've already spoken about this in one of your videos I haven't quite made it through all of them yet.
    I was thinking about the Old Gods of Asgard and how they made the song Take Control. Is there any possibility, due to the nature of the lyrics mentioning the town of ordinary, that the old gods of Asgard could potentially be responsible for setting the events of ordinary awe and Jesse's life In motion?
    Just figured you have combed through a lot of this and there's always a chance you have a theory.
    Thanks!

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  3 года назад +3

      Thank you so much for the support! I'm glad you enjoy them.
      And to answer your question, The Old Gods I feel are a bit different in this sense, while it may be semantical. One of the things they did is use undistilled water from Cauldron Lake, (An opening to a Threshold) as the base of their moonshine. Drinking this moonshine would send them on vision quests. I think some of their songs were writing down these experiences. So in a sense they are more prophets then creators so to speak. Specifically for Odin Anderson who took his namesake from a god known for gaining knowledge in order to avoid Ragnarok.
      So it is hard to say if they created it or simply witnessed and predicted it. Again semantics.

    In the "lore expert play" AW2 series the player states that he likes to switch off subtitles for the first playthru as it moves his attention from the video, especially from facial expressions.
