Followed this process, applied brake after removing rear drum and brake shoe remained expanded so couldnt fit drum. Then oil started leaking from wheel cylinder so I ended up calling mechanic to fix this.

Who told you to apply brake after removing drum???for oil leakage i think u removed wheel cylinder rubber seal

Didnt you also apply brake while drum was removed to show the wheel cylinder movement? And I didnt touch anything in wheel cylinder.
If you knew that applying brake with drums off can cause this and we shouldnt do that then you should have added that as disclaimer afterall this was DIY for beginners.

Yes i have applied brakes just to test wheel cylinder is working or not..you may have faulty wheel cylinder sir
