I've been searching for this video of the complete show for years and years. My dad was John Lee's manager in Detroit at the time this aired. He got John Lee booked on this syndicated Detroit live rock and soul music show, but the TV stations in Detroit wouldn't let them broadcast from their studios because the band was mixed race, and so was the live audience. So my dad got them onto CKLW TV in Windsor Ontario, and the show was broadcast live from there. I remember watching it at home, and when John Lee got to "Boom Boom" I thought "Oh wow, I get it now! I see why my dad is so excited about John Lee.". I was 10 at the time, and I decided that I wanted to be a musician because it was just the coolest thing ever to know somebody who was on TV.
Now that is a cool story.
John had lots of managers
Hey, Suzy - Check out this same footage with way worse video but sharp clear audio like they recorded it off the mixing board instead off of an open mic in the room - Search RUclips: John Lee Hooker 1969 PBS.
His son really has a connection with his dad and makes the music jump. One of his best sessions. John is really in the groove. House Rockin
That's Mr. John Lee Hooker to you!
Saw him twice in Philly in the 80s. Chestnut Caberet. Got there early so stood right in front of the stage, feet from him. Incredible. Didn’t know there’d come a time that all these greats of the blues would be gone, but man I’m glad I saw him when I did.
His thick, gritty baritone voice was unmatched in the blues scene. This man has opened for the Rolling Stones.☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
His son on organ is tremendous.
Bob Dylan’s first concert performance was opening for John Lee Hooker..
one of the kingpins of the blues
I used to go to the Chessmate on Livernois after hours Saturday night and Boogie with John .
