- Welcome to Finders Keepers. This is a series meant to highlight overlooked pockets of surf culture and surfboard design through secondhand sales or trades. I have been buying used surfboards off sof craigslist for many years now and absolutely love the community of people and wide variety of boards that I find there. Finders Keepers is dedicated to sharing those stories, and riding those boards.
On this episode I come across a very special surfboard that was designed by Michael Peterson. Initially I wrestled with the fact that the board was $1,500 as that would be the most money I’ve spent on a board but ultimately take the steps to purchase the craft. The journey takes us to meet up with legendary surf photographer Tom Servais who happened to be on the other end of this craiglist purchase.
Tom has been a surf photographer within the surf world for decades and acquired this board from a surf shop on the gold coast of Australia during one of his trips there. He shares with us some great stories about getting the board, MP the surfer, and his thoughts on being a surfboard collector.
We then are posed with the question of trying to find the actual “value” of surfboards. Heading down to San Diego we check in with Eric “bird” Huffman at Bird’s Surf Shed and gain some great insight into the conversation of values and surfboards.
In the end, I take the board to lower trestles on a fun day and enjoy riding it and experience the single fin shape.
I would like to thank Justin Misch and Albe Falzon for allowing us access to Albe’s legendary MP footage from the movie “Morning of the Earth”. They have remastered the film and you can watch it here. This movie is one of the greatest motion pictures capturing the pure love for surfing.

Really rad Tanner. Without magazines, we all need cool content like this to absorb.
Thanks Tom! Yeah its such a bummer not having those profiles in the magazines nowadays!! It was always a cool way to learn about how rad things from the past are and what you can take into the future. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, that means a lot! hopefully the start of more fun things!
this was awesome! So many hidden gems on craigslist. The possibilities are endless. Keep up the great work!
You know the deal!!! yeah its addicting TBH haha! Thanks for tuning in sam
Amazing to see the love for surfing. Thank You Tanner for sharing and keep up the great work. MP Rules🙌
I never understood the problem w single fins.. just go "Heavy on that rear foot" .. move it back over the fin to turn, forward to pump and glide.. but you gotta have immaculate body english and know how to knife (and unknife) a rail. Tanner passes the single fin style test for sure.
Kia ora Tanner. Absolutely right on point bro!!! This is what surfing means to me. The whole package. Thanks for creating this, to you and all your team. Shaka!
This is good, thanks. Great editing and production. Can not wait to see the next board.
Very interesting video, Tanner. I reckon MP would be happy you've got that board and you're ripping on it : ) Had the privilege of surfing with him at Kirra a few times in the 70s. He was a unique surfer and a great shaper, for sure.
Such a sick one... I love surf history. there's so much to be shared and this is rad Tanner. Looking forward to many more. Yeww 🤙🏽
Pretty sure this board was shaped by Simon Jones, now of "Morning of The Earth" surfboards under MP's eye. Check his boards under Torren Martyn & Steph Gilmores feet
Yeah Matt! I was speaking with a friend from oz, and he was saying possibly Simon or maybe greg Webb was shaping them at that time!
@@tannergud Simon talks about the experience of workin with MP on the "Ain't That Swell" Podcast (Dec 12th, 2022) at the 1hour6min35sec mark. Tanner's board is the "Kirra Special" based on what MP would ride at good Kirra in the late 70s.
dem Goodangs are gosh darn Surf Board Wizards
Love this!
Had to put stickers on it, lamoo
whats the soundtrack?
I played the music in this episode! used a MIDI korg, acoustic guitar and the end section is a live jam with Patrick, Dane and I (my brothers)
Damn YES !!! Great job … killer concept and journey !
Thanks Dylan!!! and Thank you for all the guidance and help too see it come to life! so excited that its live!!!
Sometimes a video just sings with sincerity. This is one of them. It's a simple story, but it just really hit home with me. Great great great! Beautiful board. Great surfing!
As an aussie who grew up in that era, it's great to see his board being appreciated and ridden. Good on you.
I watch A LOT of surf content on your tube and this is some of the best out right now! History, personalities, a great host, rad surfing, and really high production value. Can’t wait for the next episode!!
That board looked super smooth and perfect when you were carving and accelerating , so smooth
Right on ! Very cool
Awesome vid mate.....I used to own one really similar to that, but I gave it to a good mate many years back and his house burnt down with it inside.😭 As someone who is a collector of classic boards, the only thing that made me cringe was when you put the vans sticker on it. I know you're probably obligated too, but the way UV discolours the glass and leaves the mark of an old sticker even when its removed, just ruins the integrity of the original piece of gold you found. With all that said awesome story and I loved watching. I have an almost mint condition Simon Anderson Energy single fin you're welcome to ride and make a vid on if your ever in Australia 🤙🏼
Good point, Chris. I was thinking the same. See you out at Shelly : )
"I'm scared to even touch it!" Immediately slaps Vans stickers on it lol
Great vid! MP was my next door neighbor and surf buddy at Vland for the winter of ‘73. He shaped out of my shaping room and man, his boards were “different”. The board in the vid is the most normal board I’ve seen of his. I just hope he really did shape but I think is was just his design with his sticker on it but it may have been shaped my another MP Mark Pridmore.
I feel like the cheaper boards are either someone know nothing about surfing or they want someone else to have as much fun on it as the original owner at least that’s what i would do.
Really enjoyed that. I lived on the Gold Coast during MP's declining years as a surfer, but would see him out occasionally and he still evoked enormous respect from the crowd in the water. Loved the surfing too, never seen an old style single fin being surfed so successfully in a modern style. Shows that you can still get some movement out of a single, even if they're not as manoeuvrable.
Hi, everyone
I'm definitely going deaf. What type of board does he say it is at the end, Attic, addict or something else. thanks for your again Matt.
Haha I had trouble hearing that too. I thought he said somatic. After several rewinds I made out magic
would love to see you give this board another shot in some barrels this fall. maybe t-street or dmj's combo swell.
Yes, its the story. I been collecting surfboards since 1990. I have seen so many shapes and today,I shape ,but learning and stories from people who made it. “Pricesless”. I work at Aluminum company full time. Shaping is a hobbie, I still collect boards, always learning Downey California 😂😂😂
When did Michael Peterson shape that board? Did he still shape during his post-surfing / fat life?
Sorry bruv you just ruined a classic by putting a vans sticker on it...🤦🤷
WHY???
Be yourself not the label your just showing they own you.
Something i did at 14 put all my sponsors on my board as you get to our age tho you should be proud to be your own man not a vans man🤣🤙
C ya out there!!!🏄
Great vibe tanner and a unique board, Michael Peterson is an absolute Aussie surf legend
Just ask me. It's supply and demand. Example Rusty shaped a chit load but not all great or made it to 2023. The great survivors are worth more $. Yourwelcome
Ride a Geoff McCoy single fin Nugget made recently. It's the best board in the world.
I’ve got the original personal one of MPs, yellow bottom/rails and clear deck
Great doc. What was the subliminal flash about at 5:57? A link to the limelight thing?
You get that bored on an 8-foot day and you will be surprised what it will do grapevine
Great vid Tanner of you showing your respect to M.P . Rad ride !
Love how many Internet routers pop up with the surfboard 🔍🏄
Who was playing the raw epic music jam? Drummer was killing it.
Sick thats so rad you noticed! Drummer is my brother Dane! I played all the music in this episode, and that last song is pat, dane and myself when we used to live together. I had been holding on to it for a while haha stoked it saw the light!
Hah that’s amazing. It felt super close to home!!! Gave some old dragon brothers vibe. I live in Ojai where your brother I believe lives now too. Maybe someday we can all go for another psychedelic surf jam together!
Not into how you wack a vans sticker on it, someone has to pay for it though.
That thing is worth way more in OZ!
His name is MICHAEL PETERSON.
Dude this is rad! Just subbed 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
From reading about MP they say he had a high pitched whistle for people trying to drop in on him now you have to learn that hahahaha 😆
Love this concept. Sub'd
Amazing show and overall concept , loving it!!
So sick Tanner! Keep 'em coming!
shoves a big vans sticker on it🤮🤮🤮
Awesome! Keep these coming.
Great story Tboi! More of this!

This rules! Probably tied with Weird Waves for my favorite surf show. Hope you do an ep with dylan soon!
Literally would be my dream. Dylan is the goat of radness
Pretty epic! Definitely enjoyed watching this. Looking forward to more episodes in the future. It definitely was super cool to see the connectivity between the different surfing generations in that one board.
Collin I appreciate the comment! Thanks for checking it out,,, fun to ride the older shapes and try and incorporate those styles and approaches!!! It’s still taken me a little while with the single fins! Haha
nice surfing
Epic story
Love it dude
this rules
MP forever
Like shooting a gun owned by the baddest cowboy.
haha I was so nervous waxing it up !
This is rad Tanner - please make sure you keep up this content for surf geeks!
So cool to watch a shape like this be surfed with some modern stylish flare. Drawing different lines to what they probably did on this board back in the day. Keep doing what your doing here Tanner
Dude this was so good!!!! Keep 'em coming. Thank you!
Wow that was surprisingly enjoyable! I never knew someone could rip on a single fin! Good stuff tanner!
Really fun! Keep em coming please.
Love the episode! So well done. 🤙🙌
Incrível a alegria de vocês, para mim inspiração!
Reason 4 this board is valuable is you sprayed me with it 😂
Great edit great history great vibes. Thank you.
Well done! This was a great episode. Keep them coming!!
That was awesome! Thanks!
Heck yeah Dave, Thank you for watching!! so excited to see the feedback!
It,s only a copy it,s not shaped by MP only signed by him.
Thanks Mate!!!
Thank YOU bird!
Love everything about this
Great story Tboi! More of this!
this is one of the last few mp designed boards. as mentioned it wasn't shaped by him..the value would be twice that is shaped by mp.10x if ridden by him...beautiful board..definitly should be ridden !!
you definitely put it to work!
I remember that ad on craigslist
haha no way!
@@tannergud it wasn't from too long ago. I have been getting great deals on Craigslist for the last 4 years.
So sick! Loved the vid🤙
Awesome episode!!!
Real story + Good surfing = Chicken skin.
Appreciate that Trevor! hope to keep these going, was so epic getting to have the chance to go to bird's surf shed and hang with Tom for awhile!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video
Epic!
So epic.
If this board was a original actually hand shaped by MP himself back in the 70's you would be looking at 10k .
Just another con artist jumping on MP,s name so he approved them not original and want big dollars so what .
@@3_too_won ", so what " . I am just saying a original MP board cost around 10k . This board was made around 2010 .
M.p. was it.i watched morning of the earth many times over.i have some Rick single fins and a herbie fletcher single fin got a little delamed looks like you had fun on that legendary board
Oh wow! sounds like you got some gems for sure! I've been wanting to get a rad Herbie for a while now!
Ya it's a 8ft pin tail yellow like your m.p..2 delams across the bottom approximately 1 1/2 in by 1ft.so I quit using it .if your interested I would love it to go to a good home.
best surf content out there. tanner you are the man!
Luke! I appreciate the stoke out,,, thanks for tuning in honestly! it was so fun seeing this come to life... I feel like i've bought so many boards off Craigslist its nice to have something to show for it! hahah
Mint, mint, mint! So good!!
Mint mint mint!!
Epic work tanner!!!
