The "California Exodus" is just a myth. For as many people leave the state many are back filling in behind. Some years are high, others low but in general over a 5 year period the inflow/outflow has been pretty consistent and even.

I was told living in CA is like paying into a country club. You pay your monthly dues, and in return, you get to live in the most beautiful state in the U.S. I'm too obsessed with the mountains, the water, and the weather to leave haha.

We thought about moving out of state in 2021 due to the high cost of living and home prices but ultimately decided to stay. It’s very hard to leave many things we have here. We decided to move an hour away from where we used to live but this is our happy middle. We were able to buy a house that we could afford and we’re still close enough to everyone and everything we’ve known :) the job opportunities, weather, diverse cultures and nature - make it hard to beat.

My folks were born and raised in CA but when they retired they realized that staying in CA was not an option. After extensive research amd many trips they decided to move to SC. They miss the great CA weather but when you're retired you have other priorites. The difference between the cost of living is amazing. So much so, that their retirement years are turning out to be much better than they ever dreamed. They travel to CA twice a year to see friends and enjoy what CA has to offer but are always happy to return home. I grew up in CA and still live here. I always thought it was the only place to live. But when my job took me around the country I quickly learned how my quality of life could be so much better elsewhere. I haven't decided where I'll move but CA will soon be my former residence.

I have lived in California my entire life, but may not retire here. The homelessness and crime are too much. The people are self absorbed and entitled. People used to be friendlier and less concerned about money. I grew up poor and was lucky to successfully make it to the upper middle class. I am on track to retire early and will consider it once my kids graduate from college. I am also a remote worker so I can keep working if needed from anywhere in the U.S.

the thing is that california is so big and diverse that the issue of gangs and safety is not a huge issue for everyone. take example like roseville, it’s a nice modern suberb with lots to do and it is very quiet and safe!! the thing it all depends where you live in that state because where you live drastically changes everything, sac vs socal vs central cal vs norcal are so different from each other

We live in a place where many people keep moving to. Here are my notes that I’ve observed from them (and myself):
    - if you move from the city, DON’T expect that you will have city amenities (or at the least don’t complain about it).
    - many people move FROM a place rather than TO a place (small play on words there). Basically, they leave what they view as a bad situation, but then they usually want to change their new place to be more similar to the situation they moved from rather than assimilating.
    - most people that move here had a snapshot of summer life here but never experienced the hardship of winter. They will eventually leave after about 3-5 years because they get so frustrated with the cold. Point being, don’t move based off of a snapshot.
    - Many people here end up snow birding for the winter. While that sounds nice in theory, what it ends up doing is wrecking havoc on your community. When someone we meet say they snowbird, we now just ignore them because they won’t endure the hardships of weather with us, why would we expect them to endure the other hardships of life with us?

Great weather here too and all my family is here. Same decision, different place. I've visited CA many times since then and its beautiful, but way too crowded and still prefer Atlanta. I realized I could buy 2 houses and rent them out in LV, then realized I could save even with income tax and business taxes, so I moved full time in 2008. There's things I miss but overall vegas is cool. If I had a reason to be in CA like family then maybe I'd move back.

A few months ago my employer sent me to San Diego for a 32 day work assignment. It was my first time in California and the West Coast. And honestly? I get the hype. I met so many people who were like "my grandparents bought this home" but they could never have afforded it on their own today. And so I left San Diego feeling like if you've been "grandfathered" into the city or state in general (aka your parents or grandparents bought a home for low and you're living in it now), then there's literally no reason to leave California for any other state.
Of course I perfectly understand why someone with no assets or family home would want to leave the state as a way to gain upward mobility. But if I had been born or raised in California (especially San Diego) with a family home, I probably would never leave.

I live in Sacramento. By husband and I work remote and both our jobs are based in other states. So literally the only thing keeping us here is family. But we're honestly considering leaving. Not just cost of living but also the culture. I'm not originally from here but I found people here tend to be very uneducated about anything outside their little bubble and think nothing interesting exists outside of California. Alot of single minded people out here and we just never felt like we fit in. It's like everybody we know is into cars, sports, or travelling to Hawaii, Seattle, or Disneyland for vacation. Not much real worldly-ness and everything just feels superficial and fake. Homeless people all over the place but oh, I get to look at palm trees outside my backyard window. Big deal.
This is beyond just politics. People always bring up politics or cost of living. I feel like nobody really talks about general culture and vibe in terms of living somewhere.
I'd like to move somewhere where we can be around more humble, down to earth, less image conscious folks.

Nice video! There are 38 million people in California for a reason (nice places are desirable)🤔. The people who “demonize” California usually do not live in California and are uninformed. I’m originally from the Midwest and always wanted to live in California growing up. I have been here for 40 years and have loved every single day and can’t imagine living anywhere else in the country. I have traveled a lot and I’m sure there are other “nice” places to live but nothing compares to all the options you have here. There weather is probably the biggest reason people are drawn to California (including the homeless) but is also has an incredible diversity in food, culture, landscape and unlimited opportunities. It is ridiculously expensive here (a huge problem for younger people starting off) but all this talk about crime, taxes etc. is way overblown. No matter where you live there will be a trade off but for me I’ll keep California Dreaming!😎

Whatever anyone's case may be, just live where you want. Homelessness is a global issue right now, so is climate change. If you want to live close to family, live close to family. Everything is very expensive in CA and commute times/distances to work are ridiculous for many like spending hours daily on the road and in traffic. The nice weather and outdoors you get used after a while and it's not worth the hefty premium you pay year round. On top of that, CA politics is a dumbster fire. If you have family and friends, you will rationalize staying there for the connections, but ultimately it doesn't make sense especially for new comers.

Your videos are always so interesting. Several years ago my husband wanted to move to Idaho because others were doing it. SO glad we did not move. We live in Southern CA near San Diego. There was virtually no diversity in the Boise area. 15 years ago my husband wanted to move to Utah. Same thing. We pondered southern Oregon because my. husband's sister lives up there. Nope...So Cal is what it is. California is a beautiful state and lots of diversity. My husband is German/ Irish and I am Chinese. There is so much diversity and acceptance here that any other state just does not compare. Plus, I like to be able to go out in shirt, shorts and sandals. We just got back from a ski trip in Mammoth where we experienced the cold and snow in the Sierra Nevadas. Yes, the cost of living is expensive but I am a super budgeter on everything and live simply, I buy second hand goods and limit monthly grocery bill to less than $300 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I don't know if families can afford to live here given all the costs with school, housing cost and food. It's just my husband and I plus a dog. We bought our home in 2002 and our housing cost is generally fixed. I am empathetic to those whose rent is $2800 for a one bedroom apartment or $4000 for a modest home rental.

It's this way with the California, NY, etc, brand where despite the fact that the governments are insane and the culture and demographics lead to worse mental health outcomes and lower social capital, people will take that if it makes them seem higher status by living there. They should just be honest that there is in fact a trade-off. It's the same coping and lying drug addicts do. If you drink within moderation, that's fine, but it would be insane to pretend alcohol is not toxic just because you like to consume it.
