  • Travel with Trey to the Hare Krishna chariot festival. Known as the Ratha-Yatra (journey of the chariot), the festival features a parade with a towering chariot that houses a murti of Lord Jagganath, an avatar of Lord Krishna, along with his brother Balarama and sister Subhadra. The festival is traditionally celebrated between the months of June and July around the world. The procession of the chariot symbolizes the movement of Lord Jagganath who comes out of his heavenly abode to be with his people and bring them grace and mercy. Devotees pull the chariot along the road using ropes (roshi). Holding these ropes, the devotee receives a special blessing from Lord Jagganath. In Puri, India where the tradition has its origins, Jagganath comes out of his temple to meet with his devotees in the street. The image (murti) is moved to another temporary temple for a period of time and then returns to its original temple. The Hare Krishna festival features dancing, music, free food for the public, books on Krishna consciousness, and happy people everywhere.
