  • Ports for enclosures are mysterious, but I want to share some info I've attained over the years on how to best create your custom ports. Mostly for SPL, but some SQ too.

    Great video and very informative, Ed!! Glad I watched this as I am gearing up to build my box for my 16 - 10" Vegas this spring/summer. Seems as if my port design will be adjusted now after hearing/learning a few points you made.. Thanks again!

    Same concepts apply in cylinder head port volume and cross sectional area, combined with manifold tuning. Both a subwoofer and a running engine create pulses. Velocity vs volume of air moved, etc. Very cool content, keep up the great content!

    Wow i didn't know that there is so much science to just the port. I have learned that biulding a custom enclosure to the right specs is important. Which is why I'm still intimidated about building my own enclosure. But great video bro I learned a lot more than i did before i watched it. Keep up the good work Ed. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

    Great info. I'm personally a fan of round ports with exponential flares. Software doesn't seem to take into account air moving more slowly in the corners of ports, so a length of PVC is what I suggest to beginners. It is interesting though how you match port area to cone area, I do box volume. Im half way through testing though to come up with my own conclusion.

    I stuck a 4” D 8”L underground electrical pipe with a 15 degree bend in a very basic not ported box with about 2” sticking out of the box just to see I ported it and that comp Vr came to life so I have been playing around with ports it wild what a port can do. It’s been since high school back in 2001 that I have had a system and I’m having a blast with it. Thank you for your funny informative videos

    LoL, I recently built a ported enclosure in a hatchback in my Jeep and on the beauty panels I put a protruding round over ring where the port exists the box. I had no idea it would have any benefit to the performance. I did it solely for it looked good and gave the install some character. I had thought about putting some 45’s in the 4 corners. I guess I might have to add those in. Great video

    You should definitely sell these ports. If they work as well as your research and experience shows then I'd definitely buy them for every box I build

    You make a lot of good sense especially when you started talking about how the port needs to be closest to the back of the wall and that does make a lot of sense because my system hits a lot harder every since I did that I have a very customized board in my car as well. As far as that I don't know too many Secrets but the ones I'm learning on my box right now I can change my poured out and change the sub out in the same box and still learn to Port diameter and the speaker diameter out the same time it's a very unique box but I love it

    The flare that you moved out worked so much better, for the same reason (fluid dynamics at play) that an intake manifold benefits from the same flair pulling and pushing air into the intake runners.

    Good video. I’ve had mixed results with ports even when following what is thought to be a tried and true design for a specific driver. It makes me think there is more variability in speaker specs than manufacturers would like to admit. Sealed is easy and you can eq very low, whereas you can’t really boost frequencies below the port tuning frequency in my experience. Having said that, I will continue to fight the good fight to make ports work, because I just can’t stand to give up the efficiency and overall output you get from a ported enclosure.     You should make some complimentary videos with Pete. You give us knowledge through practice and experience, and he gives us the mathematical and scientific view of the topic.
    This port for instance, you've found how it works through practice, but a collaboration with Pete can give us the math and science view of it to explain it's characteristics, how those characteristics work through science, and so on. I've seen his video on ports, but it felt more like an introductory video to what should be a series of videos on the topic.
    I'd also like to see someone make a comparison of flare geometries; round vs an exponent of 2, vs an exponent of 3, etc. and even try other curves. Same with the shape of the port using varying shapes with rounded corners; circle vs discorectangle, vs a triangle with rounded corners, vs a square with rounded corners (4 sides instead of the discorectangle's 2), and so on, then do the same with exponential curves in the corners instead of circular curves. Maybe even expand into ellipses with varying amounts of focal points, the most common has two, but you can have more.
    I just want to see this for scientific purposes, I know going into super complicated geometry will eventually have a point of diminishing returns, but they're still things that should be tested.

    Done probably 10s of thousands of boxes since 1985....started using simple computer program in early 90s...basically did the math.....the math is starting point...in car response is 95% about trial and error and finding what works ...a bit of horn loading when it comes to port and results in different cars ...love the channel

      You must be a busy guy. If you built 1 box a day from 1985 till today you would have built roughly 12,000 boxes.

    Cool video Ed. I've always kind of adapted this weird "formula" when building boxes and it's worked well for me. I've built a few boxes in my day and I typically go for about 12sq inches of port area per cubic foot of enclosure, but for higher excursion woofers I've gone 16sq inches of port area per cubic foot..... no real science behind it,, it's just worked for me.

      See that's basically what I've been doing. I have formulas that work for me that aren't traditional. I'm far from the only one but even here people can't fathom not using T/S specs or following enclosure programs. Go to an SPL event with serious SPL competitors and ask who has used T/S specs for their enclosures and I bet an overwhelming majority will say no. Hey if your formula works, keep doing it. There is something quantifiable behind it even if you can't describe it.

    Klipsch newer Speaker use this design. The model's are klipsch premiere reference Line RP- and they produces more bass than early designs and w smaller cabinet. were can I buy them? I looked every were. I have the RP-5000f and their sound Amazing!

    So if you have a flared port on the same panel as the woofer would extending it out a few inches be a better way to do it for efficiency?

    If you ever want to make 2 6x9s have the bass of a 10 or 12 inch sub, try making a T port using 1-1/2 necked up to 3in at the joint, then play with the lengths. I tried all kinds of variations and this worked unusually well.

    I’m building my first competition Harley and was going to put 8”sub and a mid driver 10” in each bag and was thinking of building a floor where the bottom of the normal bag goes. The bags I have are stretched 6” down and 9” out so I would have all that space under the speakers. Build a floor then leave an opening on the back of the bag and put a port to the front of the bag under the floor I made? Your thoughts?

    That seems to be another debate as well subs and port facing forward into the cabin verses both firing into the trunk,subs facing the cabin port facing trunk,etc.,etc. I currently run both firing into the cabin completely sealed off from the trunk and the only difference i can notice is less low end and less around the higher end even though my midbass covers the higher end the volume of it is just not there. Ive been playing around with the port and am going to mess around with the box volume as well to see if i can improove that lower and higher end. May just be a sacrifice.

    How do you determine the desired tuned frequency with just a 1:1 port/cone area? I'm fixing to build a fourth order bandpass a 1:1 design with 4-12s. 7 cuft total of internal airspace 3.5 sealed 3.5 ported. Fi told me I should aim for 60 square inches of port and 15" long not counting the flares, if I remember right from what I wrote down in my notes. It's a trunk build and was thinking of round flared ports firing up off back glass. Amp power is gonna be deaf bonce 8000 rms @1ohm

    I was looking at ports design and wanted to know with your design, I'm looking at trying Timpano 12" subs, and the port size recommended is as follows 12.5 H, 2.25 W, 22 L, and was looking at using your style in port design instead of the squared look like it's implying to use any ideas ? And what it would look like on computer.

    I recently built a 2:1 small 4th order with 2 10s but I realized this doesn't work with lower tunings like below 38hz, but I never thought of what you said about matching port volume with cone volume.

    I'm just now getting into stereo stuff. I got a 2003 Silverado extended cab I want to build a wall in it for my 4.15s how should I come up with a design or do you have any ideal how I should build it?? the subwoofers I got r Skar vxf-15 D2. The amps are Taramps md 8000.1at 1 ohms I have two of them any ideals please let me know .Thank you.

    First great video, i think I've been able to understand more from your speaking than any books I've read. With my small experiment experience I can tell you the long tube ports should not be made with thin plastics. Also adding angles and couplings creates odd noises and I would suggest filling any of those joint gaps inside.

      @@SparkedEd they did. I tested styrene drain pipe which you can squeeze somewhat and when tapped also had a high resonance. Abs, and pvc did much better. Must of the testing was in 4 inch size. Sanitary tee fittings were interesting because you can do a short port sharing the same exit as a longer one. Best part was I had fun.

    if i have a 1.7 or 50 litre box, 1500 wrms 12 with 40mm xmaxx and i have to go either 1 3" port round or 2 3" port round about 9" long each and i want to tune it to about 30 htz how many ports will suit best and should i add length to them?

    Are you using bracing inside the enclosure on top and bottom as well as the side angles to match the oval port inside as well?

    Awesome video i like having 3 2inch by 11 inch ports on 2 12 s it slams and i put my ports 3 inches away from the bak wall of my enclosure due to the fact i like to stuff the enclosure with pillow guts to fool the subs that there in a big enclosure plus i put a vinyl lining inside the enclosure to have a somewhat non pourus surface area .

      Why don't you just build a box with more volume and not use that gay stuffing? Seems a whole lot easier to add an inch or two to your box design. And it's more professional... if you're good at designing an enclosure you won't have to use poly-fill.

    Ive tried the idea of making my port as smooth as I could at the time. Last season I installed foil tape in the port over some K jig holes just to see and I gained 1/10th on the meter. Its not much but the little things add up. I shared this comment because Ive heard tape in a port does nothing. That 1/10 most likely was from the tape because my car is pretty consistent on the meter.

    What if you have multiple ports do you add all of them for the distance away from the wall or hatch or just the one port??? 🤷🤔

    So what if you used a cut piece of PVC outside of a ported box that's on the same side of a sub to breakup the same plane? Would that help in the same way the rounded helped the wall build?

      Im actually just about to try this, just metered last night, but the guys that meter had to go to worlds today, so Ill probably put it on tomorrow and see if I can meter tomorrow or next friday, Ill let you know if I remember, trunk score rn 145. 2 sealed on dash at 37hz and 147 in the kick with a single sp4+ 15 on a scv4k

    I never use a program either ,all different cars have different resonance characteristics,I build them to be loud ,windy is cool and I must admit I will building a wind tunnel soon as well ,just a cool factor.

    I have a box build with a slot port, I have a few questions about the flare. 10 in by 3 in Port 26 1/2 in l shape. how much can I flare the baffle side as I can only flare the 3/4 wood on the outside, top and bottom so much ?
    I was told if I have a 3 in port I should do 3/4. can you clarify?
    also another guy told me 75 in flare...

    Quick question. Does the size of the basket and magnet, in relations to how close they are to the ports make a differance? In sound or spl quality? I know the sub takes up volume. but if a large 8inch is in a rather small cube, ported box with a 6 inch port thats 4 inches from the back wall, and the sub magnet is almost directly beside it. Would it be detrimental, or helpful to compress the soundwaves that much?

    I feel there’s a back pressure kinda thing , ish , like compression? (Your port distances from wall that u mentioned)I grew up with bass tubes being the best, with port in the center , opposite of sub , pounded ! The bazookas were lil different sound n feel. But I do 1 sub n try to make it as loud as multiple , and I see pretty much the same box styles for everyone out there . I believe I found the G note in one of my designs 💩 I’m just going to say .............CHAMBER...s 🤫 I’ve made a JL W6 10” hit about 150 in a extended cab f150. I do run a hcca 122 now . But your show good vibes n vids thanks👍

    I really appreciate the knowledge and science. Do you 3d print parts for people. I am looking to get some tail light lenses 3d printed.. Well i have played with boxes and ports and length. I have also noticed by inverting my subs i have more volume inside the box which allows box to hit lower frequencies. When subs are installed normally the lower frequencys and basically gone. But my subs weigh 50lb each and have massive baskets and magnets.

    In a general context resistance is the plural form. In a specific context resistances can be the plural form.

    have you experimented with port surface texture ?smooth isn't always optimal as far as flow goes. should be a cool test.

    Do you find the 12 to 16 inch per cube "rule" is correct or do you find most of the times, more port area is needed? Like 20 to 25 sq inches per cube to maximize output and keep velocity as low as possible? I have been told by many to use lower port area and by others to use as much as i can...confused..

    I build all enclosures freehand. Never had a customer complain in the 20+ years. My daily is 3-10’s on 1500 watts ~150db at shows.

      Cone area is the area of a circle. Pi x r^2

    What adjustments can you make if you are using an undersized box, if there is any?

      Polyfill makes it work like the box is larger.

      It depends. Polyfill can help lower tuning in a ported box, the other options are to adjust the actual enclosure.

      Im not sure is the octo port is much different than a normal round port.The octo can be made with the same material and tools you used for the enclosure.

    What's a good size round port for a single 15" Skar ddx sub in a rectangular box or even a slotted port size. I was thinking to use a 8" round port or a 3.5" x16" slotted port any info would help.

      In my opinion an 8" diameter port is too big for that woofer. It may be good for SPL only and a lot of power, but for all around listening a 6" would do. Can always try it though

    When you refer to double cone area for port area, are you referring to the outside edge of the surround as a diameter? Or just the edge if the cone? Def not the outside edge of the basket right?

    How can i get one of those ports the larger gray one looks like the perfect size i need for the two 12s i have im an honest person i really dont know anything about ports or box sizes or anything like that but ur ports look 💯 PERCENT better than any ports i saw on a pre fab box and like u said they also look awesome so come on brotha post some prices i definitely want the larger gray one and I'll probably get the smaller gray one also if and when there available ok thank you and ur videos are amazing (✌🏼💪🏼🔈💪🏼🔉💪🏼🔊)

    The other thing this type of port is good for is non-turbulence, depending on the enclosure design. Doesn't have the inefficiency of a square port or the coloration a round port has on the bass. I think this would be great for an sql box. Imagine a quarter wave transmission line built with something like this. Hmm...

    How do you know the cone area on a sub

      Look at the T/S parameters for the spec listed as SD. That is the driver radiating area. You can also measure it yourself. Since the surround is partially moving with the cone, you measure the diameter of the cone from the mid points of the surround. Then calculate the area.

    Almost all custom enclosures I have been around are far too big. Mostly resulting in massive bass below 35hz and falling flat above that and just generally no punch at all. Think double bass sounding like a flat tire slapping. I do believe that it is difficult to get high bass and low bass from the same cabinet. You have to make a decision with ported boxes from my experience. Excellent low end, awesome high end punch or just an ok mixture of both. I used to go with the low end monsters and at low volume they are pretty musical. Turn up the volume and I got flat nasty sounding punch. So anyway I try my best to get a blend of both nowadays which usually means a smaller box with a smaller port. Also less output but man does it sound so much better.

      I've had different results. I would have enclosures somewhat on the small side with really large ports that would devastate double bass. I would drive around with Dream Theater at 150db+ I did also play Bass Mekanik regularly, but really would peak in the 42-47hz region

      @@Chris_Wolfgram I'm quite happy with my 21" steel subwoofer. great dynamics are achieved by using a driver that's not overly heavy per unit surface area. superior dynamics.
      To each their own, though. :) some people are happy with pasteurized orange juice.

    How does a guy get some serious education material on port design or fluid dynamics or whatever? I’ve owned everything from Focal K2’s to a Kicker Warhorse and I’ve been building systems since 2006 ish so I have quite a bit more knowledge than the average joe, but short of going to school for engineering, is there any courses or establishments you could point me to to christen my knowledge here? As a sidebar - my interests of late lie more towards home audio HiFi which has been a fun journey trying to incorporate my mobile experience, so anything related to that would be amazing as well!

      Physics and engineering classes are the way to go for high end education on the topic. Besides that, search for a few good books on acoustics. Loudspeaker design cookbook is a good start.
