As someone whose favorite Trek iteration is TNG and considers everything else in the franchise "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money," I'm still very fond of TOS's brief Saturday morning resurrection. Speaking of which, I watched your entire video waiting for M'Ress to appear - *and I cannot belive you left her out,* in spite of discussing various feline aliens at the very end. Also, despite a very brief reference to Larry Niven, you neglected to mention (maybe you weren't aware) he was a prolific sci-fi author who created the Kzin and featured them in a series of sci-fi stories, including several "Man-Kzin War" novels. (I always thought it was very cool to see them show up in a completely different franchise.)
i can understand why some of these might still be incredibly hard to do make, but i think its a really fun idea to do some more of them in lower decks! we already had some in lower decks so i hope they come to modern trek atleast in lower decks
It is interesting to note that in the planned 5th season of Star Trek Enterprise, they were going to have a Kzinti episode or series of them as a big bad for that season. Author Jimmy Diggs, according to Memory Alpha, wrote the premise and there was even a model of how thy might look. On another note, yet similar, no mention of M'ress? I know you mentioned Caitains (sp?), but she was another iconic for the animated series voiced by Majel Barrett and according to rumors, Gene actually asked her to reprise the role for the first movie to which she said no. Anyway, when I think of the animated series, Arex and M'ress are the two aliens that stood out the most (beyond seeing an Andorian in a Star Fleet uniform that left me wishing for one on any show since) and the avian species the Skorr. Thank you for the video and sharing your thoughts.
Maybe some similarity in approach to rendering the Kzinti could be applied to the Caitians, too? A twofer! And, wasn't there a cat species in that same episode with the Skorr and Sord and the bug and the girl with the eyebrows? Three on a match- hat trick! Or cat trick...
They didn't build a CGI model of the Kzinti themselves, it was a CGI prototype for what one of their ships would look like. And there's nothing I can find online or have read about Majel Barrett Roddenberry ever being asked by anyone to reprise M'Ress for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. She was going to play her best know role of Nurse, now Doctor Christine Chapel.
I would love to see Jimmy Diggs get to do his Kzinti episode or movie. P8 Blue and the Nasat were amazing in the SCE books, I would love to see her make a live action appearance as well as Arex. The Edosians and Caitians became such a fixture in my mind as a kid watching the Animated Series growing up in the 80s.
Let's be honest. This lists exists so that Sean could talk about the Kzinti again. 🤣 Personally, I would like to see some of Star Trek's avian species brought into live action. Aurelians, Areore (or as Peanut Hamper referred to them, "Poor man's Aurelians). Hell, dig up a Xindi Avian (even if the Xindi arc was garbage, but hey, the Reptilians made a comeback in Prodigy).
RE: Edosians. I was just watching Lower Decks today and was wondering why that one alien dude looked familiar. Then I saw the thumbnail for this video! Thanks for helping me clear that up lol
Honestly Strange new worlds should have given Kirk his senior staff except Spock on the Faragut make the Faragut the same class as the TAS Bonaventure and make Mress and Eriks as ensigns in that ship along side Pike's Enterprise. Make the show interesting by alternating between crews.
According to the podcast, they will do an Ups and Downs for all of the Very Short Treks at once, but the current feeling on them is not very positive, and I agree.
Kzinti on the Niven's Known Universe are war beast, and cool warriors, pretty bidimensional in their basic motivations, but some individuals are truly remarkable
From the original Star Trek series, there was a race called the Horta. They were quite smart and quite the miners. I think at least one appeared in a Star Trek novel. I don't think they'd even be that hard to animate in a live action (because they pretty much were already), but it was crude special effects and models.
After Anton Yelchin died I thought if they make another Kelvin movie they should replace Chekov with Lieutenant Arex. Alas I don't think another Kelvin timeline movie will happen.
Might Sord have been a Saurian? They have appeared in live action: ST:Discovery and the crew member Linus. Granted, Saurians do not have a crest, but maybe that is a subspecies characteristic.
I can say that my father saw TAS as a teenager and all the Star Trek "nerds" at the time thought he must be a Saurian because of their familiarity with "SAURian Brandy" as a concept, and "dinoSAURs" as well, since it was obvious Sord wasn't a Gorn. Because of this, I also grew up thinking Sord is a Saurian, because my dad said so.
I want cadet M'Ress to appear in Season 3 of SNW, but done not in the style of other Caitians seen in live-action, but like the Caitian child in Prodigy transposed into the SNW art style
You completely forgot to mention and include the Caitians. Lt M'ress was an awesome character, appearing in a number of the animated episodes, even in one which the late Nichelle Nichols voiced her character Uhura as well. Caitians are mentioned in a number of novels, as are the Edoans (Lt Arex). Early publications (the Star Trek Concordance) clearly states that the species are Edoan, not Edosian, regardless of what they are called in Prodigy.
#10, of course, should be the Caitians (although I would have put them much higher). With TWO regular Caitian characters is animated Treks (M'Ress in TAS and T'Ana in LD), they are due a lot bigger appearance than that one who showed up in STIV and ST: Into Darkness.
I've been wondering as the Horta have been used on Lower Decks, it's about time for them to make a return. They were used in TOS, so they NEED to return!
The biggest problem with including these in SNW is that the Enterprise in TAS encountered these after Pike's day. Hopefully we could see these in the Starfleet Academy show (if we get one.)
since M'Ress and Arex got into the 24th century at some point through time shenanigans, we might be able to once see them if they make that Legends Show with Mackenzie! (IF HE GETS IN THERE???)
What about the Dramians from the animated episode "Albatross." They would be relatively easy to do, being tall humanoids. I could easily see them in an episode of Strange New Worlds.
In Larry Niven's known universe, Kzinti females could not talk. Except for the ones found on the map of kzin on Ring World. They also blended into the Fauna of their home world extremely well. The Star Trek animation brought up the Slavers. Exploring that would be awesome.
Actually when Larry Niven wrote the Slave Weapon for the animated series, he wound up using the Kzinti because he didn't have the time to come up with something else. Also, as I understand it, a lot of facets of the Kzinti were the result of them trying to genetically engineer themselves to fit the 'warrior ideal' better, which could be interesting both in including them in a look at genetic engineering in star trek, plus a more interesting look at how they might respond to something shifting what they see as the 'warrior ideal' they want to embody.
The slavers... or the Thrints as named in the original Known Space series created by Larry Niven... would indeed be very interesting foes for a Star Trek show. Especially in light of the fact that they were powerful telepaths capable of the simultaneous mental control of large numbers of non-Thrints. Even if, as in the novel World of Ptaavs, you only had the single time-displaced survivor of the galactic war that wiped out all intelligent life in the galaxy one to two billion years ago. They'd be scarier than the Borg.
@@GSBarlev To me, it doesn't count. Give me a Caitian that's identified as such, actually looks feline (not like some sort of shaggy bat), is on screen for more than ten seconds and has a speaking role. In other words, a real character. Then we can say Caitians have made it into live action.
The Megan who looks like a fawn or satyr is an *awesome* chance for a throwback to TOS toga-wearing false gods, *and* the TOS obsession with silly Pan flute & lyre musical styles. That could be a hilarious Lower Decks scene.
I know that the last Black Panther movie did a whole thing with Ku’kul’kan and the Mayans. So, if they brought back the Trek version, especially in live-action, people would probably immediately start asking why they’re so dramatically different. However, I’d love to see them bring back that tall shapeshifting alien they had in one episode (I forget what it’s called but it was also in an early LDS episode too). If there’s one alien I’d love to see them bring back and update, it’s the Horta. I know it wasn’t in the animated series but it did get brought back in some comics, as one was in Starfleet and serving on the TOS movie Enterprise. Maybe they could bring them back in a future live-action show, like Starfleet Academy.
While I agree about the Kzinti, there is the little matter of Larry Niven's copyright and the fact he said the Kzinti would not appear on TNG when he was asked. I don't know if he has changed his mind.
Lt. M'Res a Catulan? The communications officer in the Animated series episodes when Nichelel Nichols wasn't available. I believed she was voiced by Majel Barrett Roddenberry. The same race seen in Lower Decks with Dr. T'Ana. They could be easily realized in Live Action using make-up techniques like the ones used on Dr. Who for the Cat/Nun/Nurse creatures.
I want to see M'ress and other Kaitians! And although they weren't in the animated series (?) I would love to see the Horta. There was one in at least one novel and it was great!
I would like to see a video on species who have been seen in live action but very rarely and they are name dropped more then seen or maybe on ones who are in the background and we know nothing about them.
For me, we've gotta see the Pahkwa-thanh. Give us Dr Shenti Yisec Eres Ree! I'd love to see him show up in any potential "Legacy" series, even as a cameo.
I’ve always wondered why they just didn’t make Sord a Gorn? Maybe it’s the old Stan Lee/Silver Surfer thing where the Gorn was off-limits to all but a certain creator?

That lizard guy looks almost exactly like a Cuba false chameleon/ crested anole
If Doctor Who can give us live action cat-nuns more than a decade ago, then Star Trek can give us some really good cat races now.
A Moopsy is needed. And I'm convinced that that attack Tribble from Picard was a Tribble Tuvixed with a Moopsy.
I’d like to see the bird species from TAS that came back in Lower Decks and Prodigy
Phylosians. The intelligent plant species from the episode "The Infinite Vulcan".
i knew that the Kzinti would be the top spot before i even clicked. Sean loves his kzinti.
I believe that you might be missing the Aurelians, the Vedala, the Phylosians, Vendorians and the Skorr
I would love to see Andorian,Caitian, as recurring characters in SNW and explore them more.
Thanks for giving content coverage to TAS. That series was what got me hooked on Trek back in its run in the 70s.
The Phylosians are the species I'd like most to see, right after Edosians.
I'd like to see the Caitians. When I was a kid watching TAS I had a thing for Lt M'Ress. It must have been the voice.
You Had the Hots 🔥 for a Female Cat Alien 👽.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would love to see Jimmy Diggs get to do his Kzinti episode or movie. P8 Blue and the Nasat were amazing in the SCE books, I would love to see her make a live action appearance as well as Arex. The Edosians and Caitians became such a fixture in my mind as a kid watching the Animated Series growing up in the 80s.
Let's be honest. This lists exists so that Sean could talk about the Kzinti again. 🤣
Personally, I would like to see some of Star Trek's avian species brought into live action. Aurelians, Areore (or as Peanut Hamper referred to them, "Poor man's Aurelians). Hell, dig up a Xindi Avian (even if the Xindi arc was garbage, but hey, the Reptilians made a comeback in Prodigy).
Yes! We need more birbs! But... not in Kurtzman Trek.
5:04 those M3 green spices were shown in an episode of LD too. That one where they were trying to sneak into the party on the starbase.
Nice picks for this list. On the subject of TAS: Will there be an Ups and downs for when all Very Short Treks are out?
According to the podcast, they will do an Ups and Downs for all of the Very Short Treks at once, but the current feeling on them is not very positive, and I agree.
Atempt #5
Please do "Top 10 Greatest Friendships in Star Trek". 🖖💙
The easiest way to tell a Kzin from a Caitian, is the ears. Caitians have regular pointed cat ears. Kzinti have those ribbed bat-wing style ears.
I want to see the pink Tribbles in live action Trek!
This is an interesting list. I want to see all of these.
Is Linux (from Discovery) from the same saurian species as Sword?
Lt. Arex was shown in the STAR TREK PHASE II short "Going Boldly" here on RUclips.
I want a live action moopsy. Yes it was just introduced in LD, but wee need that live action. Also live action T'ana
I 3D printed a Moopsy (a subscriber to this channel posted a design to Printables). It is incredibly adorable in person.
Yes, I've been tapping my fingers forever waiting for Lt. Arex to show up. (but I appreciate the Lower Decks nods)
I was waiting to see Kukulkan! Good video including most of my list!
YOu could have included Caitians themselves as the 10th alien race ya know :P Imagine getting a young M'ress on SNW!!
I would llike to see Pylosians in live action.
I want cadet M'Ress to appear in Season 3 of SNW, but done not in the style of other Caitians seen in live-action, but like the Caitian child in Prodigy transposed into the SNW art style
Where can I find these shorts?
I have tried Amazon and Paramount (where I just get an error message).
Am I missing something?
I need to go back and watch TOS animated... Thanks, Sean... Good show.
I like the cat folk in Tennant's run as the Doctor when they visit New New York.
What episode of Lower Decks were the Horta on?
The biggest problem with including these in SNW is that the Enterprise in TAS encountered these after Pike's day. Hopefully we could see these in the Starfleet Academy show (if we get one.)
since M'Ress and Arex got into the 24th century at some point through time shenanigans, we might be able to once see them if they make that Legends Show with Mackenzie! (IF HE GETS IN THERE???)
13:14
What about M'Ress' species??
There is a Nasat (green beetle) species shown as a crew member in a few episodes of TAS.
Sean my good man, if they can do the Lupari in Doctor who they can absolutely do the Kzinti in Star Trek. :)
What about Mress and her Species? That could be done with just prosthetics!
We've had Caitians in the movies. Or rather, I should say, _Kirk had_ the Catians in _Into Darkness..._
@@GSBarlev To me, it doesn't count. Give me a Caitian that's identified as such, actually looks feline (not like some sort of shaggy bat), is on screen for more than ten seconds and has a speaking role. In other words, a real character. Then we can say Caitians have made it into live action.
3:12 "Going to find god." What does god need with a spaceship?"
What about Aurelians? Where would you rank them on this list?
The Megan who looks like a fawn or satyr is an *awesome* chance for a throwback to TOS toga-wearing false gods, *and* the TOS obsession with silly Pan flute & lyre musical styles. That could be a hilarious Lower Decks scene.
I always remember the alien in the thumbnail saying "My eyes" in one episode.
Some of these might be great to revisit in the ST Legacy era, if that show moves forward.
In 1973 Roddenberry had already been talking about a movie. He’d first mentioned it in ‘68.
If it was between the Kzinti and the Caitians, I'd prefer a Caitian live action. I think it would just be "prettier".
The Le Matya from Vulcan. First seen in the TAS Star Trek episode, Yesteryear.
I would like to see the Phylosians, a sentient plant would be a great addition to live action.
Philosians and Vandorians. Plus let's explore a graphically updated Melkot from TOS.
As I recall Star Trek Enterprise was planning on doing a story with the Kzinti for the fifth season had the show not been cancelled.
For the life of me can’t find the OTOY video where they recreate Arex! Can anyone link it?
While I agree about the Kzinti, there is the little matter of Larry Niven's copyright and the fact he said the Kzinti would not appear on TNG when he was asked. I don't know if he has changed his mind.
14:02 SHAUN you know Doctor Who has shown how to present cat people several times. GOT YOU AGAIN.
It’s missing a #10!
I feel ripped of dammit!
Shoudn't Caitians been included in that last bit with the Kazinti?
Also this should be more of a push to present them in say... Star Trek: Legecy? Just sayin'.
I want to see M'ress and other Kaitians! And although they weren't in the animated series (?) I would love to see the Horta. There was one in at least one novel and it was great!
The avian race seen in the animated series and lower decks is one I wouldn't mind seeing in live action.
I would like to see a video on species who have been seen in live action but very rarely and they are name dropped more then seen or maybe on ones who are in the background and we know nothing about them.
Include the Megans but avoid the Karens
You could have done 10 aliens and include the Catians (M'Ress).
