Electric cargo bicycle mounted snow plow build and operation tutorial

- This video is showcasing a snow plow attachment I have been working on for my electric front loading cargo bicycle. It's had a few hours use now and around 25 kilometers of total riding distance. The plow is easy to install and you can ride to your destination then drop the blade down and start plowing! Leave a comment or question below.
Like what you see? Check out my electric bicycle company at www.sustainawave.ca to see some of the electric bicycles I build and sell.
Common questions:
1- How much snow can it handle? I would say it performs best under 4 inches or 10 cm of fresh snow. Anything over 6 inches or 15 cm or wet compact snow will be a challenge or not possible.
2- What happens when you snag something? The blade jumps over and the ride carries out without issue.
3- Will this fit on XYZ bike? I have no idea if this will work on your bicycle or for your intended use. My front loader is very heavy and has a front drive hub making it all wheel drive. I run low tire pressure for maximum traction with normal tires. Give it a shot and find out!
4- What sort of bicycle is that? It's a front loading hub drive electric bike I built myself back in 2013 to use for my repair service work. It runs dual batteries for about 2000 watt-hour of capacity and has carried me my tools over 60 000km, preventing about 30 tonnes of CO2 in it's service life. Check out more bikes I build at www.sustainawave.ca
Happy Holidays!

I applaud your ingenuity. I never even thought to harness the power of the ebike to perform work.
Totally legendary! Love seeing it come to life using the materials on hand.
It's also bad ass that the cargo bike seems to be the "work truck" for the appliance repair business 🔥
A couple of bolts with washers would be a good idea for keeping the plastic blades attached longer term
The shot of the bike rider following you with your plow.....was very very cool. tHanks for the video
The Galloping Goose! Great bike path. Takes you where you want to go! Love Victoria, can't wait to visit again =)
Find a local friend who can weld. You can make that frame much stiffer and much lighter with steel. People usually have scrap steel lying around and this would be a cool project.
in summer this will double as a perfect pedestrian plow
😂😉👍
I have been building bicycle plows since 2014. You can get my book, Bicycle Snowplow: Why and How to Plow Pathways online. It gives directions on how to make one that you can pull and overcomes many of the issues encountered through developing the technology and clearing pathways for many years before the City of Calgary began harassing me for clearing pathways they refused to plow. The snowplowing outfit that works for the city clearing pathways wanted me to buy $1 million for liability and all kinds of other silly notions as if a 15-30 pound plow would cause serious damage to property. I could plow 2 to 3 times faster than city plows in light snow. Upgraded my bike to ebike for plowing deeper snow (6”plus).
Gave copies of my book to city hall politicians but they only want to protect their excessive need to spend money on expensive machines that do a worse job clearing pathways. They wouldn’t support the use of more efficient bicycle snowplows and the creation of more winter jobs. Power and politics leave little room for sanity or common sense. That’s why they only plow half the pathways here.
Won two awards for commuter of the year for bicycle snowplowing. I also build and sell them. My versions can be used by a regular bike or by pedestrians and joggers. Kept 4km of pathways cleared for 4+ years. Now the city plows the routes I used to clear. Spent about 50 hours/winter clearing pathways because I had no pathways to work that were maintained back then. The only time I crash on the pathways has been when the city made excuses for not clearing them.
My plows are designed to ride over rough ground. Lots of testing riding through fields with rocks on them and over grass etc. My largest plow was 5 foot wide. Normally I use a 2 foot plow for snow up to 6” deep with a front wheel drive ebike (a.k.a. Two wheel drive). Two wheel drive is best for maximum traction in deeper snow. Have plowed through 3 foot drifts. Built tire chains for my fatbike as well. (Fatbikes are poor for pulling plows or riding in snow 2-3” or deeper).
Used to have all my videos on youtube before they began censoring the truth about covid and vaccines. Then I took all the videos off to protest their rejection of freedom of speech.
Last year I built a 30lb bicycle camper which I may be using this summer for camping. Very comfortable design and easy to pull with a regular bicycle. Some of those trailers are in excess of 100 lbs.
Thanks for the memories... I miss Victoria and Sooke Potholes!
My larger bicycle snowplows (3-5ft) are also vplows that are designed to push snow off a pathway, leaving it completely clear of snow. My plows all dig into the snow so no extra weight has to be added to them to plow efficiently.
You pull the snowplow?
I’m making a variation of your plough for my tractor. We shall see how it goes! Thanks for your great thoughtful snow plough idea and video.
Philip,
You are a very considerate guy.
I would only plow snow for, my tire tracks,
4 inches wide !!!!!! 😂😄😉
Love the use of the water tank to fulfill the odd shape!
Brilliant!
Someone needs to make these commercially for cities to maintain bike paths in winter.
Not Just Bikes channel does say Netherlands keep bike lanes clear of snow just like regular roads. Unsure how.
In my country, Poland, bike paths are also cleared of snow with smaller road vehicles for snow shoveling and sanding. 🙂
I loved this the moment i saw it but im terrified of hitting an unleveled square of sidewalk thats popped up above the one before it. 😱 The sidewalks in Chicago are always cracked and unleveled
Oh man i've always wanted to do this. Cool idea using the plastic barrel for blades!!!
This video is the reason I still watch youtube
I don’t know why I was suggested this video, i live in FLORIDA, BUT IT WAS FUN TO WATCH.
Same here, I'm in Arizona. I was taking notes, "yeah that's a great idea, but I would do this instead" wait I'm not going to build one.
I saw this on reddit last week. I’m glad to finally see this video but I have to say I’m jealous I didn’t think of this myself lol This is great stuff 👍🏼
My Labrador LOVES snow...If I can train him to operate this I say win win : )
Seems like it would more stable to have a plow on a reverse trike but my hats off to you making it work on a two wheeler mid load cargo bike. I built one of those bikes as well.
you could add a small drag plow behind the bike and it would probably clear what the front plow misses. maybe even put it on a hinge type of system so you can either add some weight for more clearing and then you can raise it up when not needed.
( IMO salt or sand sprayer would only be good for clearing your driveway, not miles and miles of bike paths. just my 1cent though lol )
Good idea, but I don't think any weights are needed as the angle lifting the snow pushes it down.
Great video I live in England so we don't get much snow but I do love riding my ebike
Silly chickens! Also very cool idea to put a snow plow on the front of the bike!
Hey @Phil'sShop... thanks for the build video. I am still looking for a plow with a reverse gear.
Also add spinning brush behind, that would be really cool
the news piece on this came up on my FB feed. Nice to see something like this happening in Victoria
Excellent piece of kit. Well thought through. Great design.
Incredibly innovative and thoughtful!
Il fallait y penser et y mettre le temps. Chapeau! Maintenant, je vais devoir troqué mon hybride pour un cargo. À moi de faire la loi maintenant à Gatineau. 😄
It is Philip Marciniak . Polish great idea , YEAH ! 👏👍.
Hi Filip. I am Michał from Poland, also Marcianiak. I wish you good luck in what you do (I'm also interested in "cargo bike", but I don't have my own bike yet). Bicycles of this type are very expensive, but as soon as I have my workshop on the plot, I will build such a "vehicle".
Our surname is of Polish origin, do you have Polish origin?
Yes my parents are Polish and I will be visiting this summer. Na zdravje!
Very nice. How is the wear on the polyethylene blades? You'll likely want to add an additional replaceable polyethylene edge so it doesn't eat up the blade or perhaps even metal although that risks catching the edges on the ground much harder. Nicely done.
Do you have any metal studs in your bike tires?
I think keeping the blade above the ground slightly around half a inch off the ground or more, and using a wide brush that spins rapidly to shoot excess snow at the bottom to the side, makes the most sense.
Saw this on the news last week!
Some journalist spotted him driving around?
Very good. Some useful tips to help me improve my prototype pushchair plough (UK). Did wonder if I could use a polypropylene barrel I have spare. Now I know how.
BTW You're lucky to still have all your digits with that wild power saw use ... !!!
Hello first time here on your channel and looks really good your really good at finding way to edit and move your camera and its better then normal video keep up dude!!
Make one that attaches via quick release clamps and then sell them. Great stuff.
great way to fall on your face when the plow head jams onto something.
This is really awesome. Very inspiring to see!!!!
Dang super cool. I want to see a lot of different stuff, you could also do just some plow rides.
Saw you on cbc!!
Has every Ryobi except Jigsaw 😆Time to get one!
You could use the motor and actuator out of car door for the power window added benefit 12 volt reverse polarity motor
This is amazing, great work Phil!
The city should just hire you and you should take comms for these so others can have em
We should put these on the grocery delivey bikes. Well... If it snows in the Netherlands.
Now build this with 80/20 (stronger than wood and fraction of the weight) sell with assembly instructions and you have yourself a business. People everywhere with a bike and snow will want one
I think a recumbent trike might make for a more stable version. Congrats on a really nice build though.
Hello from Nanaimo !!
Make a camera fishing rod that you can cast out, the camera lands upright, then you can reel the camera in. :)
Love it. It's about all I can say great work.
Don't think this would work on my Brompton, but I would do this if I could!
I wonder if it's possible to take multiple brush heads and create a spinning roller that shoots snow in a direction since it works best on recently light snowfalls, and doesn't require a heavy plow, or can be used to 'sweep' up leftover snow and brush them aside.
You would need to 'belt' the roller to spin rapidly with a lot of force while you are riding and pedaling on the bike.
Great idea, great video!
If you don't cut one end of the barrel off you can use them too to fill in the gap and not have to make a piece for the center of the V plow
Might want to consider adding a steel trim or similar at the bottom of the plow so you arent releasing microplastics wherever you go. The steel particles aren't so bad for the environment.
the steel edge might send a shock wave to the supporting structure , damaging it . the plastic edge flexes enough to ' jump ' over the irregularities in the path .
@@siriosstar4789 yeah, probably right
That was fun. Thanks!
This design is definitely worth being published on Electrek or featured on Not Just Bikes channel. May be you should contact them.
I was curious about it catching on the sidewalk cracks. Whenever I shovel I catch one and the handle sometimes catches me in the gut like man, I just want this snow outta here why's it gotta fight me like this.
Was thinkin it might do the same on this and just send you flying, but it's interesting to know that isn't the case.
Might try something similar whenever I get my own electric bike. Got a lot of sidewalks the city here tends to forget about.
The shovel is plastic so will just bounce or bend.
Add thick rubber "blades" and it will be better at cleaning and blade edge is replacable.
Perhaps even better, thick bars of HDPE. Same material as the drum actually. But bars of the stuff (think plastic food cutting boards) bolted to the bottom edge could be made sharper, replaceable, more rigid. Large steel snowplows that are designed to better preserve the surface they are cleaning already use this.
It is easier to ride without the plow. So this is just a build and perhaps critique to the municipality for not plowong soon enough? Although it looked like they do a good job.
Gotta get some blinky amber lights like typical snow removal vehicles.
Instead of a plow, would you consider a brush - what the airport?
Saw your story on CBC first.
We may have to invest in this plow where we are useing a hearitige bicycle honoring our veterans by putting it in front on our private bicycle hauling company witch for example we useuly get 1 main power bicycle off lease to help our bluestone and southern 2811 veterans bike but we bought a nouther one number that one 4598 witch it's got a good pushing and pulling gear in it but yeah we may have to invest in this if we extend our company to bluefield va and west end of bluefield wv. This is really cool good job
Seems Great, But the thing that bothers me is the battery life in Low Temperatures.
another youtuber i watch finds it helpful to yeall "focus you fuck!" at the camera it seems to help.
if only all vehicles could be fitted with something similar .....
Perhaps it would be better on a trike, but it's pretty good.
Props. Attach some plow wings to the sides an you can give the DOT a run for their money ;)
You were on cbc Vancouver?
i need to figure out how to do this with my recumbent x_x
Super cool !
Great content.
Wow awesome it works
Excellent
Loving this
Badass Awesome!!
So cool
Very clever. 👍👍
Umm, when that plow gets stuck in a pothole or anything uneven in the he concrete..
yeh thats based
maybe use one of those 3 wheeled bikes
Amazing!!!
Interesting concept. A trike setup might be interesting. Single wheel front with two wheel rear. Not sure if you could use individually powered rear wheels or if they would need to share a solid axel but if you could individually power the rear two wheels… you might be able to pull off some cool differential steering off in order to offset a power angle snow blade. 🤔
Sweet!
that is awesome! Your idea is great. Not so efficient as specialized cars but it cools to see how someone discovered some things like this!
God job men!
A commercial version would be a success considering snowplough vehicles are useualy gas powered, plough e-bikes would a success
Nice!
👍👍👍👍👍
Cycle Analyst?
Cycle Analyst! GrinTech's CycleAnalyst is great.
Ebike battery powered chain saw...that sounds like a fox news headline for the most dangerous tool ever.
even and balanced , now imagine drivers do this to make thier cars safer and lower insurance costs as well as make up for the cities lack of road maintenance 🤔🧼 we could clean up this town together passively provided we do so with others in mind and learn how to without making things worse or worse getting fined for putting them out of a job for being too slow to clear the commuter paths or unable to keep up with weathers strength 🤔
also wanted to type the link so i could click on it
No salt and sand
Pretty smart man and dope asf
Heat
Nope. Do all cutting in the neighbors driveway.
The only thing this thing is missing is an electric motor
Looks like he’s got a hub motor in his front wheel. So it’s got everything!
It's literally titled e-bike...
@@josienothanksmr.officer4031 I see it now I didn't see it at 1st...
@Tony Augello 🫨 what whoa wait a second. A disagreement in the comment section that was reasonable, sane and resolved logically? No one does that! This is the comments! I wanna fight damit!! 🤣🤣 seriously "kudos" for the maturity 👏 it's rare these days
I have an idea, why not make a design for a dirt bike or snowmobile?!
I did this 50 years ago as a kid with a pedal bike not some electric garbage this is pathetic borrowing and claiming some garbage again
I like it! Very innovative. How about an electric version??? Happy Holidays brother.🌲👏👏✌️🫰
P.S. Send a bill to City Hall.
